Hasbro wanted to make the only Asian a bad guy, so Larry followed suit knowing he was going to write him into being a good guy, what he had always envisioned.

The Viper fig. As goofy as it may seem, I can almost recapture that feeling of my youth when I got him. The best looking figure of the bunch. I was a happy dude, when I cracked him out of the package, put on his accessories and just inspected him. I miss the awe and wonder I had for him. Even to this day, I feel as if hes still one of the best looking characters, Hasbro ever put out for the G.I. Joe line.

Hawk
I got back into Joe in the summer of 1986 after falling away in late 84 and this figure was the first I got. His file card really appealed to me referencing how he leads by example. I have an 86 Hawk figure on my desk at work to remind me to do to same.

Eventually Clutch faded into the background as more and more Joes joined up, but he had one last great moment while serving as field leader during "Words of Honor" in Special Missions #2, which remains my favorite story from that series and one of my top five Joe comics of all time. Larry Hama gave us some deeper insight into Clutch's Jewish heritage and how WWII greatly affected his family. We see a grittier, more somber side of Clutch there, and the ending is truly priceless. *I'd probably pick this, Shake Down - the Rattler V Skysktriker story from #34; Ambush from Special Missions #8; The Battle of Springfield from #50 and Silent Interlude from #21. |
