Cover showdown: Wagner wins. I like what Trimpe was going for, but Destro's expression is goofy.
Art: Wagner is back. After...a looong time. Topside. Yay, his decades overlong speaking role. Cutter finally realizes Broca Beach is a Cobra front, years after his DEF mission. He must feel like a dummy now. There's a sub pen under the pier? CC doesn't even know what's going on. It's a little strange the IG's wear full gear when operating a submarine, but toy representation isn't a sin. But then, where have these Iron G's been since the destruction of Castle Destro? The Silent Castle never seems to have been staffed when Destro got it back. CC assumes because NINJAS damaged brain wave scanner, that Destro had something to do with it. Are we trying to make the Commander look stupid in this issue? The moray launching method seems too dangerous even for Cobra. And ironic the guy threatening to sink Destro's sub is an Undertow (albeit, a red Cobra one). Destro stole a Romulan cloaking device. Shipwreck's antics against the Morays are toon worthy. Jumping onboard a fast moving boat. Tosses people out with his grapple. The WHALE is now PT 109? Topside mentions Depth-Charge, but really...some code names would be too confusing to use on the WHALE. So they left him at base. The driver of one Moray is a guy with a beard? I think Wagner got ahead of himself. Cobras all fail at everything. Summary: Good action issue, actually. Wagner is good, with maybe a few quirks. (What's with that odd Viper pedaling CC around?) Overdue usage of Topside and Undertow. NO NINJAS. Downside, is that Cobra Commander is even more paranoid and foolish than usual? Maybe? Last edited by Sean_C; 11-12-2019 at 07:26 PM.. |

If you all don't mind me joining this discussion, I am working my way through the issues.
I really like the "new" series, but 166 was a bit of a let down, not a lot of story. I liked the depictions of the Morays, one of the coolest toys, along with the detailed depictions of the Lampreys. |

I am constantly planning to start at the beginning and re-read everything but I think it might make sense to read 166 and start participating in this thread. Will begin tomorrow.

Both covers are decent enough. Even Trimpe's is workable, even if it looks sketchy as hell. So why do I own the Trimpe cover and not the Wagner one? Probably was the only one on stock.
With this issue the IDW-run takes a huge leap forward in quality, as we finally get a proper old school Joe comic! With Topside and Undertow here, it's like a classic toy sell issue, only selling toys that are 20 years old (wow, this issue will have its own 10-year anniversary not long from now). Wagner is back, and looking completely unrecognizable with his new cartoonish style. I love it, though, and it's a perfect fit for a series like G.I.Joe. Best art in an IDW-comic so far. It's not a perfect issue by any means, there are still some kinks that could've been ironed out, like Undertows being on the wrong side. This would have been the perfect spot to put in a proper 3-way naval battle if Hama could be bothered to read his own filecards. We also get the return of Philanthropist Destro. Breaking Cobra Commander and Destro up again is a mistake in my book, and makes both characters more stale. The drama with Destro and Baroness pretending they're not totally in love seems really forced, too. We also get cheesy stuff like a ridiculously intelligent Polly and Shipwreck bouncing around like Spider-Man, but he was like that in his debut, too, so I guess it's just consistency. Even with all the minor problems, this issue is wall to wall action, some of it goofy as heck, but exactly the kind of stuff a G.I.Joe comic should be about. When I first read it, this issue got me excited again for the IDW-run after a slow start. It's a shame we'll only get this quality sporadically.

The Moray launch tubes are half brilliant and half "what?" to me. I was sitting here trying to figure out if that is based on something real or attempted from history, but it seems like a mad genius kind of fanciful. The whole boardwalk is a weapon, see? How much pressure must be used to launch such a large, heavy boat out over not only the boardwalk but also the low tide shore? That's a Rickshaw-Viper. My girlfriend named it that. Quote:

First page impressions: Awesome! They have a Sharc tied to the Whale. Oh, damn, Polly is in this. Oh damn, Wagner draws the Whale way too small.
Deep-Six, who is supposed to be kind of an isolating and abrasive jerk, immediately shows off his knowledge of cantilever roofs. Gobs of Iron Grenadiers. While I'm stoked that there would be a secret Iron Grenadier sub pen under Broca Beach, it's vexxing that it would have Cobra symbols all over the place. Seems like an art oversight. I really like Topside. Some of the events in this issue make me remember that not much time has passed at all since the Marvel half of ARAH. The Joes are just discovering the true nature of Broca Beach for the first time (did they ever follow-up on that and attack it?). We have almost no brainwashed ex-Cobras left in the High Command. It really hasn't been long since the Headmaster was in Broca Beach actually, I wonder if Freebase Freddy will pop up? (He won't). I really do like it when Joes and specialist Vipers go 1v1 with each other like that shot of Cutter and Topside going after the Eels and Undertow. Cool seeing through the visor of the Lamphrey. Overall the biggest thing to happen in this issue was the focus on a whole squad of Navy Joes all together, which is cool, and that now the Joes know where a new Cobra base is.
