I talked to Tom that month. They are aware.

I would have liked to see more Joes here too of course. It's just that this fit very well with established expectations. Now we can hope to see Joes from all three bases scrambling at the same time. I would also like to see someone reference that they heard the firefight and were accessing the armory. Quote:

Supposedly Larry intends to feature "every" character from GiJoe in this story. I am skeptical about the likelihood of this. Maybe it ends up being a 14 issue story or something though (despite the cover label).

I can guarantee without a doubt that there will be no Lunartix aliens or Manimals. Lol.
And if Robo-JOE makes an appearance I'll plotz. Last edited by seaneley; 10-14-2019 at 11:29 AM.. |

How bout them Mega-Marines? After all, we were supposed to meet them in 146.

This issue was pretty great for me. There were moments where the suspension of disbelief were needed, like the aboveground Joes not being killed.
The Cobras used in this attack made a lot of sense to me overall. We had Crimson Guards being used in command and clean-up, securing the site after the first wave. Regular Vipers were being used to secure the lesser threats and as a back guard. Hiss Drivers being part of the planning and execution. The Night-Vipers at first seemed wrong to me, but they are going into an underground facility so they are completely logical, besides which they are often portrayed as some of the more highly tactical military Cobras. The Alley Vipers were obvious choices for a fast surgical strike like this. Techno-Vipers at first made me question their inclusion in a first wave attack, but they make a ton of sense because they are the ones accessing the facility and operating the machinery and electronics of the PIT while the soldiers get bloody. The Toxo-Vipers (version 2, no less!) made a lot of sense to me, especially after their dialogue with the Frag Vipers. The Frag Vipers are there with conventional explosives and gas grenades to cut down on the opposition, the Toxo-Vipers are performing a similar function. The Heat Vipers looked great; their yellow and purple has always been something which both excited me and confused me, so I always love to see them drawn well. This is probably the best depiction of Heat Vipers ever. Robert Atkins is one of my favorite Joe illustrators of all time and has been for quite a while. He's friendly and helpful in person, has given me gobs of his time in feedback with portfolio reviews, and is responsive and approachable to his fanbase. I own several original illustrations of his. The use of Toxo-Vipers in this issue made me remember the last time I really saw the V2 rank getting spotlighted, which was not in Hama continuity. The time I remember was in the IDW continuity when a bunch of Joes went after a Cobra scientist in a chemical weapons facility and the place had dozens and dozens of different versions of Toxo-Viper running around. In that version, the V2's were very clearly officers. I did want to see more Joes in this conflict, but I can easily buy this as a fast surgical strike. The Cobras only put their foot in the door for a moment, they hit fast, put their hand in, grabbed the guy, and were back out again in less time than it took for the Joes in the lower level to get to the armory. I'm okay with that as long as it gets acknowledged. I'm also fine with the loss of Cobra lives but now we really need to see what happens when the Joes have to clean up a bunch of bodies in their headquarters. Honestly expecting that to get ignored. Part of me also wants to see repercussions from the Chaplains Assistants being all caught up in this, but there is no way for me to even pretend that the Chaplains Assistants are not aware of the Joes and in on the secret base at this point in the Joe history. Their base got completely cratered back in the day but if it's the same Joes than it's got to be mostly the same Chaplains Assistants. Quote:
How would you have felt if the IDW half of ARAH actually really picked up where Marvel left off, and started out by featuring Dino Hunters and Mega-Marines in the 150s and 160s?

One nitpick I had was that back when Throwdown got his new duds in issue 226 he was given a built in gas mask and oxygen respirator for short term underwater activity. So he technically should not have been affected by the gas at all.

IIRC Pit one (two?) is manned by a skeleton crew, mainly Scarlett, Stalker, Clutch, Rock N Roll. They did that a while back when the Joes were divided into three locales. Utah, San Francisco and Fort Wadsworth. Budo is in command of the dojo in San Francisco. The original Joes are in Pit one. Who knows if they were even there at the time of the abduction.

So he technically should not have been affected by the gas at all. I have noticed and appreciated that the mask of Sean is different, but do not remember it being explicitly said that it has a gas mask and respirator built in. That makes sense. Now that I consider that the Joes in Fort Wadsworth WERE aware of the surveillance, and considering that Larry introduced the cybernetic hands of Destro long ago and paid it off recently, I wonder if it's possible that the Joes DID expect this attack and that Sean might be faking being unconscious. Not sold on that theory but it seemed apparent after you pointed that out.

They are totally gonna have Sean become the "real Snake Eyes" via this story. The whole setup of the story even has the Joes being mouth pieces of the fans and how its confusing them with so many Snake Eyes, and we saw what happened to Dawn in the scanner. I can see them making Sean turn evil in the brain wave scanner only for him to eventually be reborn as the good and classic SE in a new body.

Agreed. This is why I read ARAH. I don't care if something doesn't quite make sense or a mistake is made. For me it is an escape to my ten year old self. I love this issue. My only beef is the pin up cover, which are used WAY too often and drive me batty...

Definitely one of the better issues in a while. Silly in a way that is consistent with Larry at his best. Loved the Cobra army builders getting humanized - then slaughtered! Like others here have mentioned it would be nice to see a little more realism and have a few Joes sent to Valhalla. Like, say Budo...
Now Atkins - this guy's style is ideal for Joe, nearly approaching the greats - Wagner, Whigham and Trimpe. Last edited by EyeofVlad; 10-25-2019 at 01:31 AM.. |
