I think the cover is a metaphor for the series

Ha. Yep.
This one takes you back. It’s not Hama, but it’s inspired by early Hama and even Trimpes Art. Story wise. Eh. Can’t get through it. And I can’t stand the “Scarlett doesn’t fit in with Ninja Force” complaint. That was meant to be a ruse for her “reason to defect to Cobra”. Now it’s retconned as her actual feelings. Come on. Scarlett is more mature and confident then that. She’s not 11. Anyway. Larry gets a much deserved break this issue. Needs to shake off that TF crossover. Also, editorial needs to play scheduling catch up. So a filler is needed. Too bad fillers very rarely add anything to a series. This one gets zero mute ninjas out of 5. At least we get Breaker though. |

I recall reading that this was a rejected story from early in the series. So the story was a reject from 1982-83 or was the entire art, besides the sort of present day framing parts, left over from a decade earlier?
Scarlett about to fall out of her top training with Obi-Wan jedi ball thing. What is Hawk wearing? He's like a Duke V1 and Hawk v2 mix. Madame Umbra?...they are raiding brothels back then. "Super-nations?" Sign it's not a Hama written issue, Breaker is using though bubbles! Rock'n Roll mentions Crossfire, but he won't be released until... Madame Umbra bought some flying contraption from a Johnny Quest villain. Breaker calls Sgt. Rock for help. Letters page is borrrrring. Overall: It's a so-so filler issue. Despite a one-shot female villain that gets more page time than most enemies characters made after 1986, it's a forgettable story. The art's a mixed bag. Some panels are good, some are meh. As a non-Hama one-shot with the early Joes, it's no worse than issue 20, but not as good as issues 8 and 9. Comic Pack: Flashback Scarlett, Madame Umbra, Umbra Trooper |

Pretty dynamic and engaging cover. When's the last time we had one, anyway? It's been pin-up mania for ages. "Trapped on Cobra's Dark Island", this always came off like a Tintin book to me. Do yanks even know what I'm talking about?
Yes, it's a very retro issue. Apparently this was a legit decade-old inventory story. Only the framing sequence was new. I don't think it was rejected. I mean, it deserves to be, but this from the company that thought #20 was good enough to ask money for? Surely they would have rejected this one already in the plotting stage if they were going to? God I hated fill-in stories, and they were even lamer when Marvel stuck in a framing sequence to give it fake relevance. Like look at this one. The touching coming of age story of Scarlett before she knew what she was doing. If you didn't know what you were doing, why the hell were you in G.I.Joe, girl? Anyway, this issue is the handiwork of Vic Sutherland, Tom Mandrake and M. Hands. Haha, they all sound like pseudonyms, but turns out Mandrake is a real person. M. Hands is definitely fake (Multiple Hands), but not sure about Sutherland. This is his only credit I can find, and reading this issue I can definitely see why. The plot just isn't up to Marvel standards, TBH. Art is ok, but not really Marvel-standards, either. Pretty dull, undynamic and old-fashioned even for the early 80s, let alone the 90s. I can see why Mandrake made most of his career at DC. All that said, the standards are so low now even this issue seems like a breath of fresh air. We get a break from all the robots and Snake-Eyes porno and get some back to the basics adventure stuff. There's an interesting milieu and feel to the story with the Tintin Island and safe house, but unfortunately that's about it. Like what are they even doing here? Yeah, brilliant idea exchanging prisoners in dark island instead of, I dunno, Berlin or somewhere. Saying goes you know you're effed when even the characters start to question the plot. Breaker is a complete Bugs Bunny here, teleporting all over the place and making smartass remarks. Dude just basically blows the entire island up? Safe house is about as safe as Cobra's HQs in the cartoon. Favorite parts: -Madame Umbra hulks up and smashes the floor, then gets kicked in the face. This should have been the end of the fight. -In the same page Breaker spots a guy behind him, causing the computer to explode? -Scarlett: "Rock 'n Roll, help me! Forget it, you can't save me!" Still can't get over Scarlett's tits, a la Orozco. She's got like a piece of webbing between her boobs? Might wanna consult your surgeon there. I was harsh on Mandrake, but his art is actually better than what we've been getting in the last couple of issues. You know your title is screwed when the rejected fill-in is better than the regular stuff. Letters page reveals the title was missing deadlines like crazy around this time. Fanfic-level plot, bland giveaway-style art and missed deadlines. This comic was years ahead of its time.

The woman in jeopardy cover art used to be common in pulp media, though. The cover reminds me of artist on Deviant Art who has a lot of art of Scarlett in peril (and sometimes gets x-rated with it). |

Interesting that this was a shelved issue from years ago.
Scenario a.) Larry needs a break and we’re not putting any money in this. Dust off that one in the cabinet. Scenario b.) We need to catch up and we’re not putting any money in this. Dust off that one in the cabinet. Either way: “Oh look! #61 by Todd McFarlane! Let’s get this colored and ready to ship and make a few dollars off of it too!” Oh it’s coming. |

The Charlie Mike issue, really digged this one. And back to the story first shown in issue 26. I actually just finished issue 155 yesterday. Seems to me the GI joe book’s real story is snake eye’s story. And that’s great with me.
