I am an underground comic illustrator and I always like to support good independent creators. This one has me a little conflicted because it looks like an enthusiastic viewpoint of the characters but not necessarily something that jives with my own preferences on how they are handled. I'm going to definitely pick up the first issue to see what I think of Fiffe's storytelling, but it might be a more objective interest for me.

I looked at the pages on previews and passed on it. It didn't really draw me in, especially at the $4.99 price tag. I stopped reading the other IDW Joe books years ago and I think I am at the point that outside of the Hama continuation, I'm not really interested on a new take anymore.

I just read it and I liked it. The art is unconventional and the storytelling is a little too compressed. But it’s not bad. The story itself is pure Joe goodness, without reinterpretation or trying to make Joe into something more than it is. It carries the same vibe as the early ARAH, and could easily be slipped into ARAH continuity.

Well, Doc's still alive and Storm Shadow is working for the Joes. I thought they killed Major Bludd, but he appears to be alive...
When I saw Rock 'n Roll on the front with his Gatling guns, I was excited... But, then, inside the comic, he was running around with an Uzi? That seems to be a waste of his skills. Also, they seem to be redoing the Serpentor origin... Which wouldn't fit in with RAH canon... But, we'll see what happens. |

I hate to do it but as I read I can't help but think... Roadblock would not say that or like you said. Rock N Roll had the "wrong" weapon. Although I can let that pass any more since even Hama really just uses the gun of the month now in ARAH. Especially with not being hamstringed by making sure the comic character matched the figure. Serpentor? I am not seeing that so much but anything is possible. I think "Oscar" is going to have a bigger role than we realize in things.

to be fair, sure, RnR is a machine gunner, but really, that just means he is an infantryman that mostly carries a machine gun. Any spec ops soldier, or even regular grunts sometimes, will switch weapons at times based on the situation.
And of course, the Uzi was an iconic gun of the 80s for action heroes. |

I haven't read the "fictional locations" essay in the back, but I'm going to soon. It looks good up until it jumps over to the cartoon at which point that essay writer was preaching to the very wrong crowd.
This issue was fun. I started trying to figure out where it would fit in continuity since I thought it was pitched that way, but very quickly it establishes that it's all alone in it's own continuity. I guess for something like this that's best since I'd be upset if it got 99% of it right and flubbed a point, this at least keeps it fun and separate. I didn't really get a feel for Fiffe's style from this though. His characters feel generally authentic even with the jarring random organization of them all.
