Nice work Jason! I have been anticipating these for a while--especially the filecard presentation.
Viper: Very nice call-back detail touches on the shoulders (garrote and bullets). And how did you do the knife "sheath"? Looks like the typical sheath from the boot, cut down to keep the blade exposed? It works well! All the little details to closer resemble the original vintage figure are greatly appreciated by this HHFfan. Viper Officer: The chevron helmet cast is great--I may still buy a a few, as you suggested a few months back. Outstanding version of the Cobra Officer, and one of the most definitive 50th style concept of the original. Also, I've PM'd you on a few suggestions. Regarding the comic and cartoon styles: These are always fun takes! Do these stay separate as alternates, or have you found a way to incorporate the styles into you larger canon//collection? Regarding the knife sheath; yes it is simply the booth sheath with the middle front and sides cut out. I have to give a HUGE shout out to your thread, especially the brand and color of paints. I found those Citadel paints at a local hobby store (that is now closed! rats!) and Kantor blue is like the unofficial Cobra blue shirt color. So, I will probably go back and fill in some of the void areas like the knee pad holes and right thigh pocket gap and then touch up paint with the Kantor blue. I haven't given much thought at to how the Comic and Cartoon variations woul play into the canon. A quick idea would be that the difference in colored gear "could" represent a difference in rank, but I tend to just think that maybe Cobra bought gear from a different supplier. But I'll definitely give this some more thought. Jason |

Good morning fellow Tankers! The next update to my "Blue Shirt Legion" is the HEAT-Viper (High Explosive Anti-Tank). This guy represents the "Zap" of the Cobra Legion. I love the 25th Cobra Bazooka Trooper helmet and web gear and really wanted a POC/50th update to this figure.
I prefer the "Bazooka Trooper" look much more than the yellow HEAT-Viper with that funky helmet. But again, being a fan since 1982, I fall into the "blue shirt" fan club over all other Cobra troops. The three main customs with this figure are (1) repainting the mask red (Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet), (2) heating and gluing the web gear in place, and (3) making the netted helmet. In hindsight, I wish I would have cut the net shorter to hide the seam, but I'm OK with how the helmet turned out. I think paraviper may even have a POC/50th custom bazooka trooper helmet for sale or at least in the works. Comments, critiques, and questions greatly appreciated. Jason

These are very cool!
I have always preferred the early blue shirt look to the weird later troop designs. |

Really, really loving the concept and execution of this so far! Inspiring stuff, just like HissHissFangFan's stellar work. Eagerly awaiting more!
I've had my own modest -- much more modest! -- version of something like this in the works for a while. This is a real kick in the pants to get it done.

I think the weird, brighter colored figures were Hasbro's attempt to compete against TMNT which came out in late 1987. As TMNT rose in popularity you can see GIJoe figures becoming more neon-colored and more focus on ninja figures. Or this can all be coincidental (although I doubt it - especially after watching "The Toys that Made Us" and seeing how each company brands a toy to compete against another brand - think Kenner's MASK vs Hasbro Transformers). However, I greatly prefer the more military look of Joe and Cobra figures. Thanks again! Jason |

Hiss Tank forum member paraviper contacted me around the time I completed the POC/50th HEAT-Viper custom helmet and said that he was working on custom resin cast of a POC/50th Bazooka Trooper helmet. Just checked his eBay page, and there's nothing listed there yet. I can't stress enough how good of work he does. I've also purchased a couple of head sculpts from him. I've got a gold 50th Destro head that he did that looks phenomenal! He's got various head sculpts and helmets along with some web gear. Great way to support a fellow Tanker. He is eBay seller cobra1678. Jason |

I'm digging this project. In my Cobraverse, the Cobra weapons specialist Vipers all are in the same basic colors as the basic Viper. Not quite what you're doing here, but I totally get what you are going for here. Very nice.

Happy Friday fellow Tankers! Gonna do a Triple-Shot today for the weekend!
First on the list is the FLAK-VIPER!! This guy represents the "Anti-Grand Slam" of the Cobra Legion. Since Grand Slam saw double-duty as an action figure, first as a Laser Artillery Soldier then as a Laser Jet Pack Soldier, I decided our little Flak-Viper would also pull some double-duty! The Flak-Viper's primary function is as an Anti-Aircraft trooper, firing missiles at any incoming enemy aircraft. The Flak-Viper's secondary function is more of an aerial attack anti-aircraft trooper. Instead of giving him the blue JUMP pack, I decided to go with Cobra's other, much cooler, individual aerial device - THE CLAW! (cue the Toy Story soundbite). This custom is a basic parts swap and some repainting to the upper body. The upper body is a Skydive v. 3 figure with the legs and hands from a Dollar General blue Cobra. I painted the blue parts of the upper body with Citadel Kantor Blue to better match the DG blue Cobra legs. The Skydive torso is the same as the Data-Viper from whom I borrowed the chest rig and rocket launchers. This also gives the figure kind of a "flight suit" look that works with piloting the CLAW. The figure is topped off with a 25th Cobra Air Trooper head and masked helmet with an Invasion Trooper parachute rig - you know, for those Sun Bow explosions where he has to parachute to safety. As usual, comments, critiques, questions or subliminal messages appreciated! Jason
