Hmmmmmm
Lady Jaye is a Warrant Officer and Flint is Captain??? Very interesting! These two are actually my two favorite Joes. So I always love seeing some Lady Jaye and Flint customs. You stated, "The Pit and TOC have many more characters, but the HHFF series will focus on these guys." I'm not sure what this means. Are you talking about some kind of dio-story (photonovel) series? [side note, I think it's interesting Star Wars fans call these "photonovels," while GI Joe fans call them "dio-stories."] If so, I definitely need to check these out! Now a few comments/questions about the customs: Lady Jaye: First hats off on painting that Lady Jaye head! I got so frustrated trying to paint those eyes, that I took out my Dremel and reenacted a scene from "Faceoff." Second, I like that you swapped out the forearms. Besides the added wrist articulation, the forearms look a little beefier than the 25th arms. Hawk: I am totally digging this custom! First, I love that Pit Trooper body and paint app. The camo pattern on the figure reminds me something you might see in the Marvel comics or Sunbow cartoons. Your Hawk definitely has that "old warhorse" look to him. You can easily distinguish which character is the senior/veteran member of the team. You mention that Hawk is the one who "juggles" with the higher-ups; DUDE, if you are working on a dio-story, we've got to compare notes! We are on the same page with so many Joe characters. So, 1. what head sculpt is that?! You've just about got me convinced to paint my Hawk's hair white - that looks so BA! 2. I see you swapped out the forearms. Are they from Gung-Ho or Kwinn? They look much better than the Pit Trooper arms. Flint: My favorite Joe! I love this custom. Matter of fact, I've got one finished very similar to this that I haven't posted yet - again, we are on the same page with so many Joe characters. The ribbed shirt reminds me of Renegades Flint. And that harness is super cool. So, 1. how did you make the harness, and 2. Is that a POC Stalker figure or did you custom paint the camo pants? Duke: I like what you did with the subtle changes to the hair. This helps distinguish Duke from Hawk (something lacking in both the comics and the original MASS Device mini-series - come one! Duke's face looks like Hawk from the Marvel cartoon commercials!). With you mentioning "in my series" it really makes me think you've got some kind of dio-story building up - I hope so. I'd like to see what kind of work you would do on dioramas and vehicles. Jason

A few quick responses to my man JLW:

There is one more subtle but important mod done to the figure that completes the intended look. Can anyone spot it? Quote:

Again, thanks for the comments. And if you (or anyone else) plan on going to Assembly Required up der in Iowa, and want more details, just let me know.

Yes? More obvious than I thought? The thicker neck was the final touch that really completed this figure for me back in 2015 as shown below:
4 Blonde Blondes: PhotoGrid_1540062738605 by J Perez, on Flickr Above is a shot of the T13 Hawk and Duke heads, 2012 (top) vs 2018 (bot). Back in 2012, I may have been using the green ROC Pit Trooper body for a Footloose custom stand-in, but the tan version is the same torso, with the original skinnier neck for reference. Also back then, the heads were swapped, but remain the same used, unchanged from their original appearance save the white paint for Hawk's hair (which back then was too white--the newer version is a dirtier white, with touches of grey and tan mixed in slightly). |

III) OG’s
GiJoe_T13-03set3_2018-1019ab by J Perez, on Flickr These seasoned veterans bring years of special forces experience to this new formed team. Having served with Hawk and Duke on previous joint forces special teams, Shipwreck and Gung-Ho also bring a level a trust, unorthodoxy, and skills based on their different service branch training as well as their off-beat personalities. At the same time, Beachhead—a long-time respected Ranger trainer*—means to establish a template of discipline and rigor to a new generation. Alongside Top Sergeant Duke, these senior operators serve as main trainers for this team in its initial incarnation, as well as trainers and eventually squad leaders in their own right for future fire teams. *Back in the day, Hawk, Duke, Gung-Ho, Shipwreck, and Spirit formed a joint special forces commando unit, code-named “Tiger Force”. With Spirit currently missing in action (presumed dead), Beachhead was invited to fill his spot, based on his near-legendary reputation—though having only limited experience with these seasoned operators. GiJoe_T13-03set3_2018-1019bb by J Perez, on Flickr Behind the Scenes: For this subgroup, I wanted to push their age up compared to the rest of the operators—not only to give a sense of long-time experience, but also a bit of legend and some justification for them to behave in this series similar to how they were previously portrayed in the Sunbow cartoons. It also gives the opportunity for the series to occasionally have good old flashback episodes to that early team, told through the unique filters of Shipwreck and Gung-Ho. Also, with such a large cast (where 7 to 9 members would have been ideal) I wanted to have a bunch of relationships and dynamics already defined and established, then let the series naturally develop other dynamics when mixing things up. Finally, more on Beachhead/Spirit situation will be partially explained when I focus on Beachhead, but for now, I’ll say that I wanted to acknowledge Spirit as my 14th choice, and at the same time put Beachhead in a dynamic that naturally feeds the personality and manner shown at the beginning of “Arise, Serpentor, Arise!” GiJoe_T13-03set3_2018-1019bc by J Perez, on Flickr |

Your Gung-Ho custom makes me wish, now, that Dewayne Johnson would have portrayed Gung-Ho rather than Roadblock. I think he could have pulled it off better
I like how this group is a blend of military branches. Even though the number of Army personnel far out-number the other branches, I've tried to better balance out the branches among my team members. So, in my Joeverse, Ripcord plays an important role as a USAF Combat Controller. Likewise, other "secondary" members like Barbeque and Airtight are also USAF airmen. Barbeque being a fireman for the flight line makes more sense to me than an actual infantry style fireman. I have three sons that have joined the military. One son, Caleb, graduates from Engineer school at the end of Oct. I never realized what all Engineers do (mapping out possible IED and sniper emplacements, etc.) which makes a guy like Zap even more essential to the Joe team. My son, Ryan, has enlisted into the USAF to be a SERE Instructor. So, we have the Army vs. USAF debate/conversations/jokes all the time. He's outnumbered though because little brother, Tad, a high school sr., has already enlisted in the Army as an LPN (field medic?). He ships off for basic right after graduation in May. Jason |

Damn, SWAGGER is the word I was looking when trying to get the right pictures for these guys. Many thanks for that. The magnets are indeed helping me get slight variation on all these 4 different 3-4 subgroup shots (but getting the right poses and shots is taking much longer than before). The “Rawhides” are next! Will the magnets be able to hold down these young guns? Tune in later this week and find out! |
