THen we have Snake-Eyes climbing up a condemned building at night and killing a lot of goons. Then unscathed, he puts his knife to the throat of the world's greatest terrorist and let's him live. Yeah. Sure. Comics Code. Yeah, that's it. That must be the reason for one of the worst scenes in the entire comic. "JUST GET OUTTA TOWN, CHUMP!" I'm sure that's justice for those island native from issue one. Right? The officers who died in the Pit?

But hey, happy ending for little Marina who gets to enjoy the death of her family by coming to USA and moving in with former terrorists. "We're all of us adopted in this family." No, Shaun, you have a step dad. That's all. And a mom with a broad face. Also, Marina will be forgotten anyway.

Seriously, until Storm Shadow get brainwashed 40+ issues later, there is no one on Earth that can stop Snake-Eyes. So that's it the story should be over. Cobra Commander should be dead-dead.

It occurs to me that those back-up pages were actually relevant in the days before Wikipedia. Back in the 80's, that was the only way a person could get "caught up." The rest was playground arguments and garage-sale back-issues. When I was a kid, I got very good at piecing stories together by inference.
Also, on the Locust's page you see "GM" stands for General Monopolies. |

I re-read and replayed the Trucial Abysmia story-line endlessly as a kid.

Cover is ok. Inside cover..Falcon has a mustache?
Trucial Abysmia....every Joe comic fan knows that place and what it means. Snakes has one hell of a collection there. I thought my collection of GI Joe’s was cool. Cobra Commander’s little speech to the Night Creepers was straight outta John Kreese and the Kobra-Kai....”strike hard and fast. And ignore the casualties” |

Issue 109 is infamous in the Marvel run. I’d love to know how everyone felt when they first read this. How do you feel when you read it now. Whether a regular, infrequent commenter or a lurker, please let everyone know your thoughts and feelings on this pivotal issue. Yo Joe!

I hated it at the time. I liked most of the characters that were killed.
Now, I'm still not crazy(legs) about it. There were too many characters in the book, but people leave the service (Grunt) or are transferred (What happened to Slaughter?). Also, giving some vocal fans what they want can backfire. I can at least appreciate Hama killing off Doc, because he said he liked Doc. So it wasn't just "I hate all these unrealistic characters", like the Cobra freighter kinda felt like, or "these guys were never really used" (that comes later!). How about the fact Cross Country survives and Breaker doesn't? What fan would've made that call? It was also a bit of "be careful what you wish for" jab at all the letters asking to kill off some Joes. Hama twisted the knife by offing Doc and Breaker. |
