I'm torn on this arc.
All true. BUT . . . the "I must have my revenge on Snake Eyes" trope is thin by now. If this arc occurred in the first 15 issues it would be fantastic. As a stand-alone trilogy, it's fantastic. But following the Cobra Commander-Zartan-Storm Shadow-Snake Eyes-Blind Master soap opera? It's tired. If there had to be revenge, why Snake Eyes? Why not Stalker? Isn't anyone out to get him? Heck - he ran a gang in Detroit! How come Cobra never recruited any of his old gang rivals?! The issue itself - Snake Eyes proves to be reckless in 'Nam and Stalker wishes he were a medic. Huntkinder's reappearance is a stretch, but at least he likes good Swiss soundproof windows that keep out even the roar of helicopter engines. Snake Eyes being drugged and incapacitated is a neat story-telling element. Scarlett gets to use a weapon she's qualified on (likely an accident - Hama seems to have a MAC-10 fetish). I don't want to talk about Raptor. So yeah - take it out of sequence and it's a cool arc. But I just couldn't quite dive in to a variation on the drama of half the previous issues. Forgot to update my SE body count. Contrary to what some of the characters believe, he only kills two guys here. 54 kills in 55 appearances. Next couple of issues should be interesting.

I remember it too. The planned “Snake-Eyes/Storm-Shadow” graphic novel that was “coming soon” for a couple of years was converted into the Snake-Eyes Trilogy.
I loved the Baroness’s revenge relationship with Snake-Eye. Even on top of all the other stuff. I thought that was great! |

Cover tease? Will he get a new face? What will it look like?
Inside cover..are those Zartan's magic bubbles coming out of Dr H's machine. Is that how he makes SE look good, holograms? I liked this issue. Quick read but the Vietnam back story was good. Far fetched but good. Last edited by Mainframe77; 07-08-2018 at 11:15 PM.. |

Cover makes Snake-Eyes look like a killer. What did poor Frag-viper do to anybody? Also, I don't understand why they used the Cobra Air-Legion logo with the wings. But it is a good Kubert cover.
The Paine brothers...who always give 100%. When did Cobra hire these guys or are they just friends with Baroness through a fetish support group? DeSade and Torquemada's names are obvious, but Crispo...can't recall that reference. They are actual brothers, too, what kind of messed up family is that? Tele-Viper Urk (She calls him Urk twice! LOL) is there to be Baroness's talk to guy. Doc tells us Duke...er...Scarlett is in a coma! Snake-Eyes getting his face burnt again, by coals...but after this his face will depicted inconsistently, depending on artist, as either mildly scarred or burnt. Amuway, it was a silly reset button. A frag grenade wouldn't do the damage depicted on page 16. Page 18, an uncommon Cobra officer mixed with Vipers. And some weird trooper/viper hybrid the back. Page 20...remember, GI JOE is NOT part of the Marvel universe. That is NOT who you think it is. Ah, yes, we have Storm Shadow being Mr Exposition about SE and explosives, this gets to be a problem with Snake-Eyes stories..."Who are you, the narrator?" moments appear. Techno-viper on open mike night delivers a monologue about HOW BAD ARSE SNAKE-EYES IS! The crowd hates it so much they flee en masse! Destro's head exceeds the monitor's edges...it looks like on page whatever. The b-story with Billy and Raptor exhuming Jason Vorhees' body. Billy wants to kill Fred 7 do the world a favor...nah, that's just doing Destro and Voltar a favor, kid. Letters page. Hama has never seen the cartoons. Or whomever replies to letters is saying that. It's confirmed the graphic novel turned into the Snake-Eyes trilogy. Then the great response to Broca Beach being unrealistic includes "There's parts of NEW YORK and San Francisco where Dr. Mindbender wouldn't get a second glance" (wonder why he picked those places?) and "Most of the outrageous stuff in GI JOE is based on fact". Right... Overall, this was a decent issue, even with the silliness of Baroness trying to hide what's going on from Destro. Last edited by Sean_C; 06-18-2018 at 12:41 AM.. |

If only there weren't any Paine Brothers.
If only there could be a different way to mangle Snake Eyes' face. If only there weren't some implausible way Scarlett survived. If only there weren't a b-story with a guy dressed as a bird and Zartan masquerading as a blind man. Is that a Camaro? Because around page 15 this actually starts to be a decent issue. I'm not a huge Snake Eyes fan, but seeing him completely lose it is fun. Great action. Interesting use of a variety of Cobra troops (fun fact - consulates aren't embassies. Unlike embassies, consulates have no diplomatic protections at all, so there may be some issues with keeping a private army in one. Of course it's still illegal to kidnap someone and keep them hostage in a consulate, just as it is in any other building. It's also illegal to assault a consulate, just as it's illegal to conduct an assault on any building, unless you're police with a warrant. Also makes me wonder if they've ever had an inspector in to check to see if the explosive bunker is following code!). And I liked the incorporation of some of SE's file card facts - a background in demolitions, and mastering Warsaw Pact weapons. I just looked up his v3 file card - it mentions he did both Ranger School and the Recondo School, which seems odd as I think Recondo School was pretty much an in-country substitute for Ranger School. Perhaps he was bored. Interesting image of a Viper with a Carl Gustav M/45 on p. 17. There are a few other interesting weapons too - a Televiper with an obligatory MAC-10, AKs . . . Who was the gun-nut in the creative team? I vaguely wonder when the Joes will get tired of sitting in the comic stand. I'm surprised Grand Slam isn't stuck in there! My take - a good action tale sandwiched between a weak intro and conclusion (speaking of weak conclusions . . . I'll save it for next issue). |

Hama's a "gun nut", that is an enthusiast and well-informed.
I forgot to mention Snake-Eyes' new costume's origin. He strips it all off some dead s&m guys. Maybe the blinded guy didn't die, but...still. And after this arc, he keeps wearing them. I hope he has them cleaned. |

The problem with multi-part stories is I usually say my piece about them on the first part. Haven't changed my opinion from last week.
Yes, stripping down a bunch of dead s/m guys has to be the creepiest character outfit introduction ever. It's unique and memorable, though. Now that I think about it, Wolverine stole a short-lived outfit from an enemy in X-Men #107, but at least that guy wasn't a dead kinkster. Destro is completely tearing into Baroness here. Compare to 2018 when he gets his face chopped off and is all "yes, dear". Das Germans/Swiss not actually English in this way speak. Makink fun off stereotypes very amusink is as long as they not Asian are, ja? Ask Roadblock how many fiddle-de-dees he gives about authorities. This renegade went full on berserker rage with his MG on a group of civilians just a few weeks ago, and here he is. Baroness wants Snake-Eyes alive for torture. Naw, he escaped and has to be killed. Maybe you should've just capped him when he was all drugged up? Or just waste him in like issue #54? Pretty cool seeing Wade Collins in an actual CG outfit. Doesn't matter back when he was part of the Guard they were wearing HISS-Driver gear. Not sure what he's trying to accomplish here, either? Get an appointment with the B and cap her? Storm Shadow isn't actually identified in this issue. I know, because when I first read this issue I didn't know he had a new outfit and didn't recognize him. Haha, this is why you spell everything out in comics. Also had no idea this was the first appearance of the V3 Snake-Eyes outfit. I was also into the Billy subplot big time. Am I the only one who's happier to see Raptor over Billy? Snake-Eyes body count continues! Three Paine brothers and four Night-Vipers. I'm disappointed he didn't just waste the crew in the basement. The first-floor guys have only been "knocked out". Sure, Stormy. Snakes just blew up like a hundred people, including several civilians. The flying debris probably killed poor Jonah. 61 kills in 56 appearances. Now we're getting somewhere!
