Hama has said that he originally thought of the Baroness as a radicalized American college student type and the "baroness" was a nickname, not an actual title. It makes sense if you consider 70's left-wing and marxist terrorists such as the Baader-Meinhof gang, SLA, etc.

Allow me to rephrase. I wish Hama would swallow his pride and acknowledge Zandar & Zarana as twins, as they were presented to him. To see them written seriously in this title would be quite nice and fresh to see. It has to be fought for in order to be seen.

This is amazing! We're getting a ZANDAR figure! ZANDAR featured prominently in the Cobra Commander series! Character development! It's a great time to be a Zandar fan! Thank you, Hasbro!!! Last edited by Dreadnok Twins; 04-25-2018 at 03:10 AM.. |

Like the trailer park bit.
Cobra Cola. Have a Cobra Cola and a Smile. Nice art on Sneak Peak on bottom of page 13. Looks like the red Michelin man. Vehicle art is bad throughout. Who am I kidding, all the art is rough in this issue Where did Destro get Han Solo's blaster? Ok read. Art quality hurts some. Last edited by Mainframe77; 05-03-2018 at 10:44 PM.. |

"Poop on Scoop" would've been a better name for this issue.
I think this issue is Hama's way of mocking Hasbro's increasingly unrealistic characters. First Lightfoot gets tortured and now new guy Scoop receives the bitter end of Joes even though he passed the program, which we know is no cake walk. Duke makes an uncommon Special Missions appearance. Of course, Stalker and Wild Bill are here, and Tunnel Rat. And if you want a joe to be a jerk to someone, Leatherneck is the go-to guy. El Jefe is mentioned again. He reneged on some deals with Destro, but we are saving him because he's our slimy weasel. We see how that thinking pays off for the team later. Stalker talks about springing Ambush, but I don't remember Ambush getting captured, I thought they were rescuing El Jefe. "Feed me!" says Tunnel Rat, whose part is now played by Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. Iron Grenadiers ditch their helmets and gas masks for practical gear. Who's decision here, Trimpe's or Hama's? They still carry those impractical swords with them, though. "We're big and tuff and we take no guff...we're the Iron Grenadiers." Wow, that's terrible. Later they shout "Destrooooo!" like they are in the cartoon. "The Flash will blind you". I thought they were in the Marvel universe? Scoop earns the Joes' respect by participating in another failed mission to some backwater country. Next month: the goofiest issue yet! |

This is a classic issue for me. I had recently bought Scoop from the Portuguese island of Madeira as one of my first Joe figures. Man was that a legendary trip. I also got my first Marvel superhero comics for that trip, and found a bunch of first year G1 Transformers there, in the early 90s. Still have no idea how they had those!
Anyway, so back when I first read this issue Scoop was obviously one of my favorite characters. He's progressively gotten lamer and lamer as time goes on. When I found out he's based on some real life journo, he earned his spot as one of the worst Joes. Almost as bad as the Sarge! In the comic he's some kind of Trip-Wire replacement, who doesn't own paperclips and falls asleep on missions. Scoop may suck, but this is still a great issue. Almost like a sequel to #82. Its nice to see some tension within the Joe camp for a change. Even resident jerk Leatherneck is brought back for one last appearance even though you couldn't find the toy even in Madeira. Flint would have made for a good choice as the douche in chief, but Larry makes the shocking choice of portraying mighty Stalker himself in a less than favorable light! Stalker's wallowing in his toxic masculinity by referring to the other Joes as ladies (maybe this piece of dialogue was actually supposed to be in next issue?). To cap things off, friggin' Duke of all Joes gets to absolutely shut down Stalker! Larry is in total pro mode here. Of the other Joes, Hit & Run and Tunnel-Rat are fairly cool with the new guy, but Muskrat is an absolute dick. You'd think someone who just came off the assembly line wouldn't be all Tom Berenger, but there we go. Good crew of Joes, anyway. Contrary to Scoop, I used to hate the Iron Grenadiers as a kid, but now love 'em. Here they act like they're something special, and not just another group of army building cannon fodder. For some reason that annoyed me, but now I'm grateful. This is one of the best showings of any army builder in the comic ever. Maybe only bettered by another IG appearance? They even have faces, and one of them is called Willy Peter! At least that's what the Finnish translator thought. Shouldn't there be a Hama footnote explaining the meaning? I want to see a new Cobra Civil War: Willy Peter against Earl Bob! Stalker completes his douchiness by being a smart ass over another Joe getting shot in the friggin' knee! I just realized this is Hit & Runs last Marvel appearance. His knee got shattered and he never walked again! He changed his codename to Hit & Limp. Scoop is an absolute failure in this mission, but he's accepted as a Joe because we're running out of pages. I like to think Stalker the douche was being sarcastic in the end there. The bullying of Scoop continued, causing him to become disillusioned and join the Crimson Guard.

SM23 - I never had this one and have never read it. My only comments: Scoop isn't the first Joe to run around with a camera. The Lady Jaye figure came with one, though I'm not sure she was ever shown in using it in the comic. And I'm surprised Scoop would appear in a land-based adventure. He seems better suited for those aerial reconnaissance missions, collecting film footage to go along with aerial stills. Meh. |

Something must've changed with the Baroness before 1984, maybe because the MASS Device cartoon gave her that accent, maybe Hasbro said "she's European" and Hama just went along with it.

Hama considering Baroness an American is probably a recent development. I read that interview somewhere, too, but maybe he just forgot the origin. He also said Scarlett doesn't have a sister and the Collins' only have one daughter.
Seriously, the Baroness Anastasia DeCobray, birthplace: Knoxville, Tennessee?
