The HAL as a Field Artillery Piece doesn't make sense, but certainly as an AD weapon and Anti-Tank. Same with the Whirlwind. I mean the barrels point straight up. The FLAK can do it all. The Blue prints point to the fact it carries multiple projectile types, but is listed as a howitzer.

Personally can't see either the HAL or FLAK being used as "indirect" fire - especially a "laser cannon." Isn't "indirect" fire like lobbing a projectile in the air to come down somewhere else? Well, I'm no scientist, but I'm thinking lasers shoot in a straight line, not lobbed in the air and coming down in an arch. On another note, the FLAK has always been like a base weapon to me. Just can't see GIJoe hauling it into combat. However, I like the design of the FLAK better than the HAL, but I like the Whirlwind the best! Jason |

FLAK is not a Laser cannon. It's a 105mm Howitzer. I always picture the firebase being setup and then A helicopter flies in and drops off the FLAK.

The FLAK is listed as a "howitzer" but in the blueprints two of the types of ammo it lists are "anti-aircraft" and "anti-tank", neither of which would be used for indirect fire. So I guess the HAL, FLAK and the Whirlwind could all be used in the anti-tank and anti-aircraft roles. With that in mind I guess the Slugger and the Mountain Howitzer were the first truly indirect fire systems to be introduced into the toyline (systems larger than a mortar that is).

Read the last type of ammo:
Rocket Assisted Projectiles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket...ted_projectile It's Artillery. I wonder what the effective range is?

Max effective range, with base bleed (probably the same as rocket assist?) of the M119 is 17km (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M119_howitzer). I'm not sure how accurate that would be, as I don't think there are guided 105mm rounds (there almost certainly weren't in the early '80's).
But I think with artillery you need a whole bunch of shells landing at the same time for max effect, so you'd need half a dozen or so of these to make it worth the effort in the indirect role. |

I actually think these would be laser guided munitions. The Joes would get the best of the best.

I mentioned a few pages back about the Dreadnoks and how I am attempting to sort their leadership team (from watching Sons of Anarchy). Their top three would be the president, vice president and sergeant-at-arms. At first I figured Buzzer would be the prez, Ripper the VP and Torch the sergeant-at-arms. But then you throw Zartan into the equation. Is he actually part of the Dreadnoks or does he just ally with them? If he is an actual member of this motorcycle club then I would make him the prez, Buzzer the VP and Ripper the SaA. Just like in SoA I would make members come and go and internal power struggles happen in my Joe fanfic. For example Zarana and Zandar would later join and Zarana would be given the VP position and later Road Pig would be a perfect SaA (after his Prospect initiation that is). This would cause contention amongst other members such as Buzzer. So any fans of SoA out there? |

I think that the HAL is the laser equivalent of the FLAK, which is in turn an updated version of the famous Second World War German 88 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8.8_cm_Flak_18/36/37/41), which had anti-air and anti-tank roles. The only other system that I know of that fills both roles more recently is this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_De...ti-Tank_System
Certainly there are benefits to dual-role weapons, especially if that means your AD can push its bubble forward and contribute to the ground fight too, which is vaguely how the HAL seems to be used here: YOJOE.COM I actually think that Flash is a more appropriate HAL operator than Grand Slam. But since GL's the man, perhaps he started in tube artillery, showed an affinity for high tech stuff, and then he became a HAL operator after completing Special Weapons School and Advanced Tech School. I'll just assume that one is HAL school and the other is jet-pack school... Also, Hama showed a little bit of Grand Slam's background in "G.I. JOE: Declassified." |

Ahh...good catch. So that would make the FLAK an anti-armor, anti-aircraft and indirect fire weapon.

This would cause contention amongst other members such as Buzzer. So any fans of SoA out there? Buzzer was shown as a natural leader in the comics and he is college educated, so he's the gang's "go to" guy, no matter what. (I thought it was really out-of-character when the Sunbow cartoon had Buzzer say, "Awww. You know I can't read!") I also think Zarana would always look out for Zandar - nobody would dare mess with him - and he would be more prominent than shown in the comics. He could literally slip in and out of areas without being recognized (when disguised that is - otherwise the only place he's "hiding out" at is a punk rave.) The Sons of Anarchy really could have used him when dealing with the police, FBI, cartels and IRA. He has a million legitimate uses and is really underused in my opinion. Roadpig's just an enforcer... and he's mental. He's attached to Zarana at the hip. She keeps him in line. Zanzibar is the original "Jack Sparrow." Read his file card! "Pirates of the Caribbean" ripped off Hama! (LOL) Zartan's the leader. Nobody's taking that from him. I love how DDP expanded his role and the Dreadnoks growth. They really took the comic and characters forward. Last edited by seaneley; 03-20-2018 at 07:48 AM.. |
