Scarlett's outfit on the cover is like a more reasonable version of her regular costume, albeit still in non-military colors, but it doesn't appear in the issue.
HUSH JOB The trapezoid Cobra Consulate's debut! This location will get used a lot (too much?) in the next 50 issues. Ron Wagner draws a nice Baroness. His art is pretty great, if not as "crisp" as Whigham's. Or something. Storm Shadow as a more restrained Bernie Goetz? Hama's commentary? Out-datedly attired mixed-race Hollywood street gang! I mean, I guess, I didn't live in 1987 NYC, maybe there were still guys that were sporting the punk rock mohawk, retro-style greaser look and the Luke Cage afro with head band. The whole scene wasn't even really needed. It's just silly. Scarlett can just infiltrate the cleaning company staff with a granny disguise. And hey, Scarlett did a granny disguise in Sunbow's COBRA STOPS THE WORLD. Eels just hang out in the sewers and red ninjas just hang out in the furnace room. This is only the second appearance of Red Ninjas, right? We don't even know who they are, IIRC. You'd think the Cobra might have a more relaxed security force than standard troopers with metal helmets and AK-47's. This is a consulate, after all. Why bring Timber? Bring a wolf all the way to NYC for back up? Because comic book! Alpha Wave Overload activated Snake-Eyes' SUPER STRENGTH and he breaks free from his metal arm retraints! Umm....no. Sorry. That's dumb. Snake-Eyes' MIND POWERS make the brain wave scanner overload to the point the monitors explode! Okay, either NINJAS are magic or the brainwave scanner is one of the most unsafe devices ever invented. Red Ninjas crawl up to the top of a burning building. I thought ninjas were smart? There's so much fire in the main room, everyone should be booking it, not readying for a ninja duel! The smoke would be unbearable. Okay, so where was Storm Shadow carrying that claymore? Who top floor explodes! Mindbender somehow survives this, that or his scene takes place before this? The final reveal. THE BARONESS was Scarlett! Somehow she and timber overpowered the Baroness and 4 guards and tied them up. And she's able to pass as Baroness...I guess because other Cobras never look at her face...so maybe that's convincing...if they are the same build. Why does the Baroness wear garters under her tight leather. Seems kinda odd. (I know...wearing her leather costume all the time is normal, though, right?) So the Cobra Consulate gets trashed in its debut. Overall, this silent story was not as effective as issue #21. It's a lot more gratuitous and Hama's too in love with Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow and Scarett at this point. They slaughter or over-power everyone in their path. Snake-Eyes even uses mind powers (?) to escape before help arrives. The over-powering that began with Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes Cobra Island revenge trip is increased here. Silent Interlude ended with a mysterious reveal; Hush Job just does the cartoon disguise bit. JOES ON TELEVISION. Recap of season 2 stuff. Tidbits about the season 3 that was never made. Lady Jaye pin-up with her toy weapon...that's unusual. And Mindbender with his toy cattle prod. Serpentor in his non-toy attire...meh. MY DINNER WITH SERPENTOR. Mike Zeck illustrates a story! (With Dennis Janke). And it's just okay...I think Wagner and Whigam are better. Yeah. Oh, well. VIPER's one page debut...in the back ground...a year after his toy debut. Where are the Kitchen-Vipers? Years later, they are still MIA. Damned, Bulgarian flu! "This is a gastronomic outrage!" say Mindbender, sounding like something he'd say in the cartoon. I can't not read that in his cartoon voice. Then a story about pizza's origin. The cartoon had MY FAVORITE THINGS and the comic has Serpy reminiscing over pizza. LOL. A somewhat amusing short story...but fluff. It doesn't mean anything. Zandar and Zarana pin-up. The Dreadnoks. Hawk...filler, filler...filler. They aren't bad, but still...filler. Final page by "Hawk" who informs us that he knows Cobra Commander is still alive. You might think this is a lead in to issue #57. BUT HAWK ALWAYS KNEW. Cobra Commander was his back-up plan to keep the team going in case they actually killed Serpentor at some point (possibly using Bulgarian germs). Don't trust Hawk. BACK COVER: Black with white gloves and boots ninjas...aka the Black Dragon ninja from the TRU six-pack. I never made the connection until now. Annual #2 was better. I mean YEARBOOK. Have your classmates sign it. Last edited by Sean_C; 09-20-2017 at 11:31 PM.. |

I didn't like this issue as a kid. I bought every other issue from the comic store before I got this one. Who wants to "read" a comic without words? Unlike #21, I'm still not big on this one. It's a pretty average ninjas crushing everybody -issue. Since #21 had Snake-Eyes on a stealth mission, it made sense to go for the silent treatment, but here it just comes off as a gimmick that only makes the issue more confusing. I remember having a lot of trouble keeping up with what was going on, so I guess there's a reason comics are full of exposition.
Scarlett serving as a cover girl in this issue. No, I mean she's really Cover-Girl here. Zeck, what happened, dude? So, our adventure starts with a she-wolf in leather and a buff, shirtless master of torture carrying a black-suited gimp tied to a pole to their dungeon. The beginning of so many classic stories. The consulate has been up for a day, and already it gets blown up. Better get used to it, Cobra. Ron Wagner is a capable artist, and one of the better ones on Joe. I'll miss Whigham, though. We also have a silly and cartoonish back up-story with Zeck being quite underwhelming. Yeah, killer debut for the Vipers.

Why is the consulate going all Towering Inferno, anyway? Was it because of Stormy throwing one star or the Snakes mind-blast? Cobra spent a million bucks on the consulate, and 2 bucks on fire safety. Almost like the cartoon. Only thing missing is Mindbender bailing on a parachute. Scarlett only knocked out the Baroness and used the extra outfit she had with her wig. Everything else is just The B taking her daily break.

I suspect this rescue was Hawk's plan all along. Set Snake-Eyes up to be captured. Fail to rescue him in Sierra Gordo. Have Scarlett bring Storm Shadow in on the NYC rescue, bringing the ninja one step closer to joining GI JOE. Then get the Consulate building trashed.
Of course, Scarlett could've killed the Baroness, but then they might get someone competent to replace her. Better the fool you know... |

This is the first moment where he could have officially joined up with G.I.Joe. The last moment, I would say, is during Trucial Abysmia. Everything in between he could be seen either as a legit Joe, or just a guy who hangs out with them, like Billy. SS never goes on official missions, just unsanctioned black-ops, like #66, #78 and #95-96.

Cover is solid. I think I know what I'm buying here just by the cover. I like that. Everyone rendered well. Snake-Eyes built like Arnold here.
I can't believe they got zoning for building that just so doesn't fit in with the rest of the neighboring buildings. But Seigies are lawyers. Did the Cobras recently catch Return of the Jedi on VHS and get the idea to carry Snake-Eyes like the Ewoks carried Han to be cooked. Ok, what plane did Scarlett jump out of? Because if she pulled a Rip-Cord and bailed on Slip Stream in the Conquest, Slip Stream should quit the team. They don't have any respect for his safety. Wagner does draw the Baroness well. Storm Shadow the barber. Love that page. Also love the black sewer page where he dispatches the two Eels. Bubbles equals troubles. I'll assume the Red Ninjas aren't vampires. They just are charged with defending the lower portion of the Consulate and part of their training is meditation. Snake Eyes goes all X-Men and uses his psychic powers to destroy stuff. In your guys books is Storm Shadow's right eye messed up when Baroness (Scarlett) is pointing the guns at their heads. In mine his eye is just a white spot. If Storm and Snake were surprised that was Scarlett why didn't they fight their way out of the mass of Cobras and the Baroness? I do like Baroness in garters panel on many levels. |

Fun Fact: consuls, and consular staff, don't have diplomatic or any other legal protections. So, had someone presented reasonable cause of kidnapping and forcible confinement, there could have been a warrant, police, arrests, and it could have all been done legally and in accordance with procedures so that those rascally CG lawyers wouldn't have been able to exploit legal loopholes. But then that story is hard to work in a garter scene.
As for the mini pizzas, I enjoyed that little whimsical diversion. |

You'd be like showing your friends the Baroness in her undies. You'd be not wanting mom to see you staring at it. Lol Last edited by Mainframe77; 09-22-2017 at 08:57 AM.. |

I like Wagner's cover. Did he use the model on Lady Jaye's bosom? Destro is like Mr. Clean with the sparkle.
