Yeah, and on the flip side, DDP's "Dreadnoks: Declassified" was the worst of their otherwise cool run. There were so many terrible continuity errors in those 3 issues that I wanted to hunt down that editor back in the day and shake him like Homer does to Bart: "Why, you little--!!!"

Just got done rereading DDP's "Return of Serpentor" arc. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss those days (except for all the deaths).

Cobra Commander to Serpentor: "You have the genes of all of the greatest leaders of all time. Except mine!" Stomps him in the face. |

The DDP series now feels more like the original Marvel run than this one ever will. I couldn't tell who the heck was on that copter at first due to the sloppy artwork. Long Range is called Long Shot or something at one point before someone corrected the error. I thought that he was another "dead meat" character such as Cool Breeze since we're going back into Trucial Abysmia. The cliffhangers are still being set up to accommodate trade paperback reprinting, but collections are rarely solicited anymore. I don't think they've gotten around to finishing Bellomo's deluxe "in proper continuity" hardcovers. IDW also cancelled its Artist's Edition HC after a long delay. I received my credit for the book yesterday. Agents Emerson & Lake are likely nods to 70s progressive rock supergroup Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake died last year. Hama is either an ELP fan and/or subtly acknowledging their passings. Clearly, they were in his mind when he wrote this issue. I only read this book out of sheer nostalgia and wavering loyalty towards Hama, but keep wishing it would finally receive a mercy killing with each passing issue. This is the only comic currently being published which I still follow, and I used to be a huge Marvel/DC guy back from 1981 through 2011. After this is over, I'm done with modern comics for good. |

The DDP run was totally forgettable to me. Nothing stood out. They killed off characters left and right, and worked off the cartoon series more than the Marvel run.
I think the thing that I do remember was Bazooka had gotten fat and was kicked off the team. Blaylock loved the Dreadnoks and it showed in those stories, the rest with the Baroness and Destro having kids, Hawk in a wheelchair, just did not fit the universe we knew. Cobra Commander used a nuke for cripes sakes. I will say it did create tension as no one was safe in the DDP universe. No one. ARAH is very much like the original comics to me. It ventures into the science fiction realm but not too deeply. The BWS is still at the center of this arc. It has been in Hama's stories for decades. Snake Eyes is still amain character as are Stalker. Zartan and Storm Shadow. Zartan is still conflicted to his path in life. He avoids his path but now seems to once again have an opening to "make things right" with Dawn. He screwed that up with the Blind Master, before, hopefully he won't mess it up with Dawn. Storm Shadow is the loyal friend and brother in arms to Snake Eyes, Wade, Wade's family and Stalker. The giant eye was definitely crossing the line, but it just goes to show that Larry has difficulty wedging Transformers into his universe. That was supposed to be an alien tie in to the giant robots in the basement of the PIT. Not everything always works you know. ARAH is a character driven, military focused, action comic. Larry does not care about plots. He cares about his characters. He has said this time and time again. He hated Resolute because it was not true to his characters ( it is on his facebook page) To me the characters in the book have not changed one iota. S.L. Gallant does a fantastic job with the art and has surpassed the number of issues done by any one artist for GIJOE. For the most part the team has been very consistent on the book. Now that Guzman has moved on, the editing has improved. Still ain't perfect but improved. I still see the same characters that have always been the focus of the book and to me their motivations and actions are the same. As they should be after 35 years. Cobra tries to gain power, the Joes try to stop them. Some country is doing something to its citizens or starting a war, the Joes are sent in before it gets out of hand and turns into full scale war. Surprisingly, arms dealing has also always been at the core of the Joe books. Destro Darklon or Voltar are always selling weapons to small countries. The Joes watch those areas carefully. Larry will apre real world events such as Kuwait DAPL or Benghazi in his own way at times. GIJOE ARAH is very much the same as it has always been. Hama is a musician when not writing. The Emerson Lake and Palmer theory is very probably true.

I don't know. I just don't feel like there's any progression forward, like Hama is stuck in a time-loop. People say his work is character-driven, but we rarely see any deep delves into the JOEs' lives. At least DDP brought in the families of the team. Hama's two attempts: with Stalker and Spirit, were horrible retcons that contradicted the file-cards he had written! I have no clue if any of the other JOEs are married (besides Duke's - weird retcon, missing for 2 decades - wife). Are we really supposed to believe that all of these guys are bachelors after all these years? DDP had that covered. Just the fact that Bazooka got fat and had to lose weight was more character-progressive than Hama's work.
I'm not knocking the man, but I really want to see more into what makes each character tick. We need some real drama, not just mission creep. Heck, get Lady Jaye and Flint married! Anything, man! Just give me something besides the same status quo for 40 years! |

Hama contradicted his file cards long ago when Scarlett's sister shows up but no mention of her 3 brothers. Of course "Scarlett's father and three brothers were martial arts instructors." Were...so maybe they all died?
