Flashback: Had a little time this weekend to set up this shot that I've wanted to do for almost a year, recreating my G.I.Joe O13 display setup:

gCobra_25th_82-01CobraTrooper_2018-1222a by J Perez, on Flickr This weekend I had a liitle time to play and experiment a little with photography--settings and backgrounds (and with a new camera phone mount which allows for steady portrait orientation). Specifically I wanted to play around with the classic background explosions of the vintage and 25th cardbacks. These backgrounds are signatures for customizer greats jlw515 and range-viper. I've been afraid to use them myself for that reason, but also because of the highly contrasting tones of black and white. I had time for testing 2 figures. One was my basic O13 Cobra Trooper, mainly to see how a dark figure with lots of black accessories fare. It didn't come out too bad: different, but had to play with best shutter speed to not wash out the black area details while also not washing out a lot of the blue areas with light white glare. The second pic plays with different background tones. The second is my shade of preference because it brings out the figure's colors the best, as well as details in the black areas. But the explosion effect is just so much more legendary. gCobra_25th_82-01CobraTrooper_2018-1222e by J Perez, on Flickr |

Honestly, the blast background pictures isn't much different than your second (grey background) picture. However I think the first picture probably better represents the actual figure colors. I think the third picture (light grey background) is a no-go. It causes too much of a lighting wash on the blue.
You figure out all the techno-camera stuff, and I'll owe you a royalty check!! LOL!! Jason |

You figure out all the techno-camera stuff, and I'll owe you a royalty check!! LOL!! Jason Jason: You're right about the similarity. I think the control I had on lighting the photo stage was at a great point to where I could basically use the same camera settings (exposure, iso, shutter speed) for all four backgrounds, while getting my preferred values and balance of highlights and shadows (with slight adjustment to either exposure or ISO levels for optimal results). For the light grey background, I would have reduced the shutter speed a step for best results, but kept it the same as the dark grey background for straight comparison study/reference. Going from f 1/30 to 1/45 would fix the white washing of the blue, but maybe increase the black shadow areas, and lose a little highlighting on the black boots and webgear. Its all a bit of trial and error each time (make sure you have lots of film!). But the bigger issue for me with this lighter background is the strain on the eye in the final pictures. Darker in the background is easier on the eye, especially when viewed on a screen. I took a lot of photos back in 2015 with white backgrounds, and later realized the effect that had. The desire to retake a bunch of photos in 2017 with grey backgrounds, and the pictures that resulted, gave me the desire to publicly start posting these in the first place. So I thought the explosion backgrounds would cause the same subtle eye strain as the light background, but in the end, not so much--subdued by the black borders and floors, as well as minimizing the white area of the background as much as possible. If anything, these backgrounds can be little a bit overpowering, especially if you want really want to showcase a figure's details, build, and colors purely. But using these explosion backgrounds is such a cool throw back, uniquely G.I. Joe, and has become definitive to the jlw515 presentation. Regarding the black background, I would only use it for stylistic effect, as black colored areas and deep shadows just get shallowed up and washed away. Effective lighting and exposure can bring these areas back (I think Mythic's photos do these the best), but you will lose that deep blackness in the background you may desire, as well as wash out colors in highlighted areas. Or you can embrace the blackness and shadows for some dramatic jawdropping photos like BorisPing just put out recently with his Cobra Ladies. For my first year of photos here, I really wanted to bring focus to all the small details and colors of my figures sets (for my own archival purposes as well as to best show you all what what you can't see in person),and found the grey or dark grey backgrounds to be best suited for these goals. This is based on years of looking at review photos by GeneralsJoes and custom figure photos by OreoBuilder. OreoBuilder always gets comments on his excellent paint apps, without use of washes or drybrush effects. Notice also that OB starts off his photo sets with his figures set against a simple grey background, which effectively show off those paint apps and builds (then followed up by cool diorama shots). Oy. Lots of words. More pics tomorrow. And probably more words. Jason: I’ll pm you regarding the camera and lighting camera Happy New Year to all. |
