I don't really like the cover, except for Lady J. You can tell a man drew this. But other than Lady J, meh! Splash page is pretty meh too. It just doesn't look right the way the two bigger vehicles are placed and proportioned. Maybe it's just me.

Need help. Year Book #2 and issue #45 are both published in March 1986. Which came out first? If Yearbook 2 was out first, Ill post it Wednesday. If it was after #45, then next Wednesday.
I'd like to do these kind of issue mid-week (Wednesday). Shortly it will be an every week occurrence when we hit #50 with Special Missions. That should be fun. |

Hama's desperate attempt to keep up with toy line additions, and he's still missing Alpine and Quick Kick...also Frostbite (long way off) and when did Tollbooth appear?
Cobra had joes at their mercy and uses them to test creeper vines, which I guess the vine fail...despite being pretty potent. And BATS appear without any real explanation. DR. BRAINWAVE will earn some no-prize. Joes stop gun wielding BATS but never go back to retrieve said guns. The medkit of scorpions is heavy enough to go through a windshield? Kind of a so-so issue really. GAS MASK Cobra troopers appear in one panel and never again, but take two slots in the Comic Pack toy release and later inspire Hasbro retcon them into "air troopers"...all because Hasbro wouldn't recreate the rest of the BAT mold or dust off the Airtight mold or something. So many characters and such a dull comic pack. (But decent for army building) |

I think of it as a uniform variation, just like the shoulder pads on the stormtroopers. Something we saw but never got. like that first tanksmasher prototype pilot in issue 22 or the Cobra transport helicopter pilot.
Gotta catch 'em all.

Yeah, this is probably one of the clumsiest toy issues in the entire run, and it's not even a commercial issue! This is the moment new toys really start overwhelming Hama. It's like he found the '86 line on his doorstep and went "Already!? Crap, I haven't even used half of the guys from last year! What the hell am I going to do with all these lamos?" Then he panicked and used an old cartoon script or something. Still, the issue does have some sort of quaint attraction to it. I guess it's the opportunity to see all the lam... lesser-used characters in action.
Cover features Lady Jaye going full-on road-rage and giving Boba Fett and Optimus Prime the drive-by treatment. That should put butts in the seat. Clearly not a Zeck cover, unless he was really half-assing it or had a really forceful inker. In the story Lady J is trying to act all veteran on the new toys, actually from the same vintage. Girl, you have one actual mission on your belt, and you spent that one on the grass after being blasted two seconds into the operation. The rest of the time she's spent picking fights with teammates. The Selleck-stached Joe macho-men are totally bullying on poor Airtight. Karma will catch up to them one day in another desert. Of course, Airtight conveniently breaks Joe rule #1 and doesn't wear his full gear at all times. In fact, it'll be like a year before he puts his helmet on. Airtight and Barbecue spent all their time in the comic and cartoon without their helmets, and the toys... are like the only ones that have a unremovable helmets! Sonova! Arr, still driving me nuts! I'm pretty convinced Hama always brought in new characters from coolest to lamest. That's why it's weird to see him jump at the chance to use Brainwave like even before the file card is finished and the toy is out. Later he gets dumped into the freighter with all the other lame Cobras. Mindbender has comic scientist written all over him. The toy is some kind of s/m torture guy who's supposed to be an interrogator. The powers that be decide that's too kinky, so he gets turned into the master of mind control. No problem yet. Then in his debut he comes up with creeper bombs. Ok, he's a scientist and stuff... only next thing we know he comes up with androids and torpedo boats. Then caps off everything by Frankensteining a living human out of some 1000-year old corpses. Wonder how many PhDs this guy has? Yet he still has time to beef it up at the gym!

I distinctly remember that after reading this issue as a kid, I flipped to the covers for some sign that I may have picked up a "bootleg" copy of GI Joe somehow. It really did not seem like an authentic GI Joe story to me. It felt so out of place with what had been going on. Did Larry actually write this issue?

As far as I'm concerned this issue passed with flying colors!
By that I meant it passed "What if GI JOE were a Star Comic?" test. Star Comics was Marvel label for kiddie aimed fare, like Thundercats, He-Man and Peter Porker. nero9000, good eye to note the mustache squad here. Alpine and Footloose should've replaced Jaye and Airtight. Mindbender was meant to be a torturer, but it was Hama who talked Hasbro out of it after the Zartan file card controversy. Hasbro had some un-PC ideas floating around, they managed to leave some character on the drawing board to avoid enemy ethnic stereotypes (left them to good guys, instead!), hence why Cobra was so white (storm shadow aside). This issue leaves me scratching my head.
- Page 1 - What is up with that white back piece on the RAM? I've never seen it on a toy. It looks like a single bump would decapitate the driver. On Page 5 it looks like it is attached to Lady Jaye's back, but I've never seen a toy with this type of backpack. By page 8 it is completely gone. - Also Page 5 - Jeebus Christ, Airtight, you had one job. - Page 8 - The Mauler could just drive straight through those cars and escape. - Page 9 - How does the AWE Striker jump? Does it come with hydraulic actuators? - Page 21 - Sean_C already mentioned this, but it's nonsense that he can throw the tiny first aid kit through the windshield. You don't need bulletproof glass. Regular safety glass has been used in cars since the 1920's. And then these two asshats run away from some scorpions. Um.. yeah. - Also: At the start of this issue the Creeper Bomb works amazingly well. Yet they never revisit the idea. A weapon like that would be devastating as part of a combined arms strategy. This is an example of the Never Recycle Your Scheme's trope, and perhaps also a violation of Niven's Law (which holds that a piece of technology introduced in the story should not be conveniently forgotten in future stories). Weirdly enough, the Creeper Bomb would return as a major plot point in the recent Scioli TF vs Joe. |

Creeper vines failed in this "test" This issue was a test of the new joes and the creeper vines. Destro decided they were not worth the price. In a way this is like an episode of "Shark Tank" ok Brainwave, prove to me why I should invest in these. Brainwave failed to convince Destro and so, the idea was shelved. Besides, they had to have a reason to use Airtight in this issue. creeper vines that spit out sleeping gas is as good as any. This issue was to "sell" the silver mirage, the mauler, the AWE striker, Airtight, Bazooka, and the BATS.
