This cover is great! Destro menacing. Snake-Eyes in peril! Simple cover but very well drawn. Kudos to Janson and Springer.

Art is great throughout. I like the way the fire fight at the cabin was done. I thought Whigham drew Spirit well and Airborne not bad. I love Airborne and the way he was animated in the Sunbow cartoon always made me mad.
I think this is the start of a great art run by Whigham. The Fred gag missing the Joe's is still funny to me. Some more shots at the Chaplain's assistants. Always funny. "Cobra Beeper MK VIII" , how covert? Same with the hats on Destro and Firefly. Why are they going to the cabin? I get they are following the beeper but you send lackeys to recon that, right? Why Destro and Firefly? I like the way it ends. Big explosion and we are left for a month to wonder? Only a week in our case. |

I really love this cover, and the art is really excellent all throughout the book. This is a really solid story overall. And it's one of the issues that really stuck in my mind even years after I read it. We get introduced to Spirit, Billy gets drawn deeper into the Baronness' web, and we get a glimpse of what Snake Eyes considers his "normal" life.
I think the action is all very well done because it really matters where each character is. Especially at the end. In the more recent comics they just sort of jump around like super heroes and you never see anybody using cover or concealment. Its all very ridiculous and unbelievable, and it really detracts from the book. But this fight scene was very well done. I only have a few comments for this: 1) I laughed at how Ace is wearing his high G pressure suit even in a C130. Its like one of those cartoons where you see Snow Job wearing his parka in a jungle. 2) Thought it was funny that Spirit sees the tracking device and breaks it. When I fly on airplanes, the crew tends to frown on us breaking off pieces of the jet. I mean, the least he could do is say, "Hey guys, I found this beepy thing, you might want to be aware of that." 3) I get that Joes are supposed to the fastest and the toughest, but ten miles is ludicrous. I mean, seriously. It's one thing to stretch the boundaries of human ability (it is a comic book after all) but they run ten miles in the space of like five seconds. Sloppy and silly. |

Cobra Commander knew that it was a C-130 that took off. That meant lots of equipment and Joes.
You know that is one heckuva long trip. Jersey to California. One thing I did find odd is that Airborne gets shot and turns to Spirit and says "Help me Spirit Iron Knife" I can see him maybe saying help me Iron Knife or help me Spirit but not both....

With this issue G.I.Joe reaches the next level. That's what I've always thought, but we still have a bunch of Springer issues to come, don't we?
Whigham is the missing piece that the title needed to reach the top. And what better introduction for him than one of the absolute best Joe issues of all time? I'm talking like top 3 here. I'll take this one over #21. It's not rocket science. Just put a bunch of Joes and Cobras in the middle of the forest and have them blast each other! Where are these issues now? I agree with Solosam, the firefight seems more intense and realistic compared to a random battle scene in any medium, really. Fred and Firefly are idiots for leaving their cover, though. Maybe the reason I really enjoy this is because SE gets the absolute crap kicked out of him! We'll never see him this vulnerable again. Dude can't even throw a grenade right. This SE is about a million times more badass than the guy who came later. And what happened to this Destro? It's nice to see Airborne, but the fantasy casting agent in me thinks this would have been the perfect moment to bring in Ripcord. Especially compared to the less-than-impressive debut he gets in next issues. The Cobra side, in turn, is screaming for Scrap-Iron here. C'mon, let's not skimp on those new toys! Yeah, great cover. Surprised to find out it's a Janson/Springer. I've never been much of a fan of either. 82 Joes have become even more generic than last issue. Poor guys. "Fred Broca here!" "You recognize my voice?" "Starscream, is that you?" They did send lackeys.

This seems to be a recurring thing. They also say it several times in the next issue. Maybe a greater Joe scholar than I can shed some light on it. Seems weird, since Iron Knife is his real name. Kind of defeats the purpose of having code names in the first place.

This is a great issue. Love the cover, the cabin, and the Airborne/Spirit combo.

Rod Whigham (Not Ralph Wigham) raises the art level to modern (for the 80's) level with his great pencils. Trimpe early stuff was Kirby-esque, which gave his work a sci-fi feel. Springer's style seemed to belong to the early 60's. Vosburg's work was distinct and had its pros and cons. There were a few others, but none of them became regular artists.
Fred's Cobra logo phone. LOL. PAGE 2 THOUGHT BUBBLES. Hama broke his own rules...and will again on page 18. Wild Bill's up and flying again. Wasn't hurt that bad. Zartan "Let's not argue about who's to blame" Yeah, because it was clearly you and your henchmen who fudged it all up, Zartan. Fred's daughter, Heather, looks like an 80's kid, compare this to Springer's 1950's style kids. Yeah, Spirit, tell someone about the beeper...and BEEPER? Really, Zartan? It actually beeps. How did the ground or flight crews not find it before it got that far? Gomer Pyle the mountain gas station attendant. "GOLLLY, MISTER!! That sure is a shiny mask you're wearin'!" Firefly and Destro are wearing TMNT "human" disguises, the hat and trench coat. Funny Cobra Commander does the same in COLD SLITHER cartoon episode. Snake-Eyes comes to the door in combat "togs" (as Hama would say). His spidey sense warned him of danger...okay, okay, he likely heard the car coming from far off. When did Destro restock his wrist rockets? Right, I know...Fred had some stashed in his basement. Airborne and Spirit's 10 mile run uphill...Snake-Eyes would be long dead if that were me. LOL. Sorry, no exploding gas tanks, Larry. Sure, everything else was realistic until that...maybe, Snake-Eyes was shooting tracers. "The INDIANS ARE HERE. WHAT?" Ah, the quips people make after running 10 miles and then firing assault rifles. Oh, no, Destro says he will NEVER forgive Snake-Eyes for rescuing Scarlett from his castle. I guess their friendship is OVER. Really, Destro, like to hear yourself talk? Snake-Eyes doesn't give a damn. "So white-eyes!" That's racist, Spirit! "If you're still in there, Destro...well, quit monologuing and leave already." - Firefly Destro infuriates PETA by smacking a wolf. Then everything blows up. Pretty solid issue and the artwork elevates it. |

Hey, this is a guy that can spot Spirit in a tree ten miles away. (???). I'm sure Destro didn't stand a chance.
