Larry has said that Frontline-story was the worst he ever did, so I think he's nixed it. It sort of contradicts with the IDW-stories, but not in a big way. I think Storm Shadow leaving/coming back was the biggest issue, and that can be easily explained.

And now to drag this post back on topic, Issue 21 & 26 have some of the best artwork from the first few years. Larry Hama and Steve Leialoha did an amazing job on these two issues. It's disappointing to go from Larry and Steve to Mike Vosburg in issue 22 and to Frank Springer in issue 27. |

I think the Hamaverse is an unofficial term. Since all the ARAH continuity DDP stuff was disavowed and not written by Larry, it simply goes away. But Larry did write the Frontline and the Declassified (and probably more). I guess he considers that 'canon' and has also incorporated some of the characters like Shooter, etc into his ARAH continuity. I'm not sure IDW/Hasbro has an 'official' stance on whether the Larry written DDP stuff is 'canon'. Someone with more knowledge please add.

I believe IDW gives Larry almost complete control over the title, with Carlos Guzman on the editing side keeping watch like Asa at the Mayberry Bank.
S.L. Gallant will add his own flair but if you ask him all he says is "I draw what I am told to" I don't take complete stock in that as he has added certain touches that seem to be all him. I think the only thing and it is a big handicap if you ask me, is IDW wants nice neat 6 issue arcs they can put in a trade. To me this is the worst marketing part of the entire comics industry. Not just for GIJOE but for stifling creativity in general.

Cover is nice IMHO. Love the graffiti on the subway. Do they have elevated Subways in NY? Nice action scene.
Inside full page. Back to oddly drawn dog. Judging by the first couple of pages, Springer/Mushynsky's art looks better here then in issue #25. Weapons still need some help. Still to me, better than their effort in #25. Thoughts from everyone else on this.... |

In the batteries not included documentary, (Vimeo) Larry says that like most writers he writes what he knows. That is why there are so many scenes in New York and San Francisco.

I'd say it's a bit better, not great. Springer draws Wild Weasel's helmet nicely on page 4.
"Scarlett, Stalker and I were putting together the GI Joe team" - Hawk. Or, 3 of the 4 1982 characters that Hama cares about were its founders. Uh-huh..."and of course we were all ninjas!" LOL Snake-Eyes' werewolf connections were never really elaborated on after this issue. Snake-Eyes slaps Scarlett in flashback...which annoyed her because he was faking it and she wanted it rougher. Psychic twin-sister connection mentioned...would her code name be Seye-Ekans? In the not-Delta Force tragedy in not-Iran, Snake-Eyes took a blast to the face but isn't blind. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Hama had revealed that Snake-Eyes was indeed blind the whole run of the Marvel series. "There was nothing in the world that could make Snake-Eyes look human again." We readers are thinking Freddy Krueger...or like Harvey Dent's BAD SIDE. Then in 1989 we see he's better looking than Jonah Hex. And he can be fixed! Mutt tells Wild Weasel and Firefly to put their hands up, instead of gunning them down. Then the other cobras show up, a lot of shooting and nobody hits anyone. Sure this isn't the cartoon? "How many archers in the world can hit and kill a ninja master behind a solid wall?" I dunno, tubbo-master, but maybe, just maybe you ninjas have an inflated sense of your skills. I mean, only STORM SHADOW noticed a low flying helicopter near your compound and someone hanging onto a rope ladder from it. "DUMB COP! The man got a machinegun!!" LOL...casual police bashing. "Don't look, Elwood..they're perverts!" Elwood's mom assesses the situation correctly. Ruthless NYC street sweepers nearly kill ninjas. "Police call with masked man and ninja in white" Gee, Scarlett sits around listening to the police scanner all day. Sure they said "ninja" too. Is it Duke, is it Hawk in the VAMP? It's Hawk. Monologuing ontop of a speeding train. Another ninja skill. Wild Bill stole Rock'n Roll's machine gun. But the real question is where did they land the Dragonfly? This episode's swamp b-plot was futile, time to call out the DREADNOKS! Decent issue with some NYC bystander silliness and the swamp stuff goes just about nowhere. |
