While I can only imagine the pain in the ass the drop system might be, I sort of agree with JJ. However it probably time for some sort of change. Honestly most of these characters are relatively equals. The polls have lost some steam.
FOR me there are currently 4 characters in this current poll that I am heavily responsible for. ALEX DESTRO massive DDP appearance Khalikhan significant IDW comic arc to become the next Cobra Commander Demolishor - totally personal Brainstorm - several issue appearances. So I can't vote for all, but I wish I could. You could switch to the multiple choice polls like JJs. Or to clear out more of these quicker, pick the top two from every poll and move through the dead weight. Although the multiple choice polls seems to lend itself to more ties and threeways, and you will have a good gauge if some of the more obscure characters are actually more popular than the poll will show. I mean I want to vote for four in this poll alone. Just because my measure of greatness is measured one way, doesn't mean all other ways are invalid. Of course not. But now the choices are mostly personal preference because there is less attachment to these more obscure characters.

I'm fine losing the drop system. A compromise could be something like at least 5 votes over ten polls, or no consecutive string of 3 polls with zero votes.

Body Bags, add #921 amd Tyrone
I do want to make your job easier, since you are nice enough to keep the poll going. I would prefer the drops to stay, just because otherwise....the poll does get clogged. This is all in fun, so no biggie, really...but it would nice not to have someone stuck who isn't going to win for 100 polls... Maybe nominations need at least three people to "second that motion" before getting into the poll. That way it would assure that someone doesn't even make it into the poll unless there are other people who are willing to vote in the near future for them. I could nominate some really obscure character who appeared in one panel of one comic once....and nominated them 30 polls consecutively, and I would be the only person nominating that particular person and presumably voting for them. Unfair to the rest of the people in the poll, just because I like "dude in the green shirt on page 14 of issue 134". I nominate more obscure characters that I like from the comics. However, I never force them into the pool. I nominate to about 23 o4 24, and let others nominate to put them in. That way I am not the only person who thinks they should be in the poll. Not everyone does that. Maybe it should be that after 25 noms for a character there need to be a certain number of people who "vouch" for that character to be in the poll. That way no one makes it into the poll that doesn't have several people's approval. For instance, I am slowly nominating about 10 characters that I like. Orlovsky is one of them...once he gets to 25 nominations....X amount of people would have want him included on the poll. I think this would cut down on character who make it into the poll on one person's nomination. 6 other endorsements from poll participants would make it roughly 20% of people who agree that that character should be in the poll. Just an idea... |

For instance the top 10 characters in the noms right now. I'd be willing to lend an endorsement to Jammer and Ramar. The rest, I would not vote for in at least the next 20 polls....
Jammer 25 Pântano (Piloto do Rothor) 25 Night Stalkers Shock Trooper 25 Eagle 24 Manleh 24 Poluicão / Pollution 24 Corrosão / Corrosion 24 Red Jackal 24 Ramar 24 Kracken 23 |

I pretty much do the same thing as Bub. I get to 20 votes and then I let someone else sort of put them in. Maybe it's time to move to 3 noms? I had suggested the two nom system to sort of filter out the noise of personal Preference, and that has worked in some regard. Three noms is not too much of a change from the current system. My problem is I can't say I love hardly any character left that much. So it's hard to maintain my objectivity. I mean I either have a personal affinity for say Eagle and Manleh, but I know Copperback, the Emir of Bezheen did more in the Comics, yet White-out who I don't give two shits about has like 3 figures already?
I would love a way to get more in at one time. This would clear the board and force me to think about adding new characters, and chances are I would be picking a winner more often. I know I have picked some of the latest winners, but I half the time I am voting based on some strategy of either trying to keep someone in, or from winning or just to pick a winner and not throw away my vote. I just want to be able to vote with my Conscience and have it mean something.

Add White-Out and Satin
Keep the drops, because changing things now is unfair to every past dropped character. |

Another reason losing drops now is fine: if you look at the next 60ish highest noms, almost a third of them have already been dropped. But, the next lower half of all nominees only have 1-4 nominations. Which suggests that the next 50-75 or so new poll adds will all be bunched pretty closely, then there's a drop-off to the bunch of 50-75 after that. There are not huge numbers of great characters at the top of the list, racking up nominations because they can't get into the poll. The drop system worked, but the field has flattened out.

Would it be easier to say if you've been in for 5 polls and you're still in the bottom 2 of the poll, you get dropped? So everyone gets an asterisk after they've been in 5 polls, and immediately drop from any future poll if they are ranked in the bottom 2. Or if they're tied for last place (e.g., 3 or more goose eggs).
Not following your logic, Stalker. No matter where they are in the nom list now, it will be radically different after we go through another 50 polls. And we're back to the problem of people very clearly nominating characters people are not ready to vote for, well ahead of other more popular characters. Given the caliber of characters we're left with, I think it might be time to end the poll at 500. A nice round number. We've seen a drop-off in interest ever since ARAH was finished off. There may be some other more useful poll that can be run at that point rather than sorting through the remaining dregs. Last edited by JediJones; 10-21-2016 at 12:14 PM.. |
