The only large figures I buy are WWE figures and they take up alot of space, I have about 500 and they take up the same amount of room as my 1,200ish Joe and 2,000 ish Star Wars figures and weigh about the same too. I have around 100 Marvel Legends as well, just because they look awesome. I have tried the 6" inch Star Wars line twice and sold them off twice, I just prefer the four inch figures there, mainly because I look at my collection and know that the six inch line will never have the depth of characters and vehicles and play sets that the small figure line has. Plus the six inch Star Wars line started off with amazing details paint apps ect but now they look and feel cheap.
I do love the WWE figures though, they are kind of a guilty pleasure, they are fun, I can go to almost any store and pick one up. Which is something I can't do with almost every other line of figures I collect. |

Sunk cost fallacy! Hitting' it with some economic theories. I'm wondering if sunk cost is what keeps some of us in the 4" or 6"game at all? Further, what about other hobbies? Is my action figure collecting keeping me from further exploring replica props for instance?
I know for a fact that all the time, effort and number of figures I have in 4" (all of the time, effort and number) is keeping me from buying even single 6" figure right now. I simply have so much invested in it. I don't think I want the 6" figures, I want the 6" figures (the new Wolverine and Deadpool, the DC Multiverse Dark Knight Batman) in 4" format.

And I hear ya on the last paragraph crystal clear. Why can't we have an awesome 4" Deadpool? What's so hard about that? For a MSRP of $13, Hasbro ought to be able to accomplish it. |

Ha ha, I wasn't trying to use the sunk cost fallacy to explain why people might stick with 1:18 instead of moving over to 6''. I was mostly using it for the hypothetical example of "my 6'' figure came with 1/5 of another figure; I better spend the $80 necessary to buy the other figures to complete the set so that 1/5 of a figure doesn't go to waste!"
Although one can claim they are too "invested" in 1:18 to move over to 6'' (or vice-versa), this is usually more of an emotional investment--or a preference for that particular scale's qualities--than an example of sunk cost fallacy. Or, as SmokeBellew pointed out, oftentimes it's opportunity cost--a simple matter of finances. Collecting, for some people, is in fact a zero-sum scenario, where they stick with one scale due to the fact that they can't afford to invest heavily in both. They'll continue to support whatever they started with, or feel more emotionally attached to, rather than compromise the completeness of one collection by trying to start up a second one which will also wind up incomplete.

I would be all in for 6in Joe line!! I doubt it could replace my 4in figures but I would fully embrace it nonetheless. I love the marvel legends line. I have had about 500 or so at one point or another but sold most off due to space and the ability to replace most of them with its 4in counter part. Other than that I don't collect to many other lines. Its basically Joe,TF, Marvel and a small selection of 4in DC with Thundercats & Ghostbusters making a reappearance thanks to Matty Collector.
