You LOST me at 6 inch line. That would TRULY be the DEATH of the line.
Most of us have invested hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars, and nearly 10 years into a 3 3/4 modern era line. To me, it would be a slap in the face to switch to an official 6 inch line. Having a 6 inch SECONDARY line, I think would be fair, but the main line should be 3 3/4 inch. That's where our thousands of dollars will go. Now I do agree that a "freshening up", or a "revamping" may very well be needed, but it would be FOOLISH to revamp AND change to a 6 inch line. The long awaited GI Joe 3 movie, can produce an awesome, freshly faced, 3 3/4 movie line. They can do a new, freshly faced, and NEW CHARACTER driven line based of a new cartoon, in 3 3/4. They can create a new storyline, and incorporate it into a 3 3/4 line. All of the above, plus the new Hasbro cinematic universe, can and should be the NEW REBRANDING for the line, but it MUST stay 3 3/4. This WILL make MORE fans eager to jump in. Having all that NEW, and a new 6 inch line, will be WAY TOO FOREIGN in the eyes of what GI Joe is, and it will scare many away, and turn many off, including its solid core fanbase.

Hasbro could make a 6" Joe line with ALL of that, AND be able to sell it at retail to far more people beyond the declining GI Joe fan base. And not deal with the cost and fuss of owning a "collector club" or some other arrangement like that. In all reality, the dedicated collector base for GI Joe is shrinking,
Weber and DePriest said that a 6 inch line has no plans but if it was to come about it would coexist with a 4 inch line. Joe has been in several scales and iterations. In two years we shall see how the plans for a Brand Blueprint affect G.I.Joe and what changes may come about. Goldner has said that they have 1500 brands in their vault, GIJOE is one of their challenge brands right now. With 1500 brands at their disposal it could be replaced in a blink of an eye. So far it has not. Hasbro is trying to do something huge here. They are reinventing the wheelhouse of toy manufacturing by morphing Hasbro into a Marvel or D.C. It took decades for those two companies to become multimedia companies. Hasbro has a long way to go. As far as 3D printing, until there is a printer in every home, we most likely will not see Ready to Print files any time soon. Change, adapt, overcome. Right?

I wonder how much of that was because, at the time, it was going to be their last hurrah.

Was that before or after the announcement? I think they mentioned it a couple times during panels...but I am getting old and forgetful.

Death of the line...
Trite and cliche. The absolutes are so entertaining. I was there when the faces of the 12" collectors looked like they were fed a bowl of crap when Hasbro showed they were pressing forward with the 3 3/4" line. they continued to support that line for collectors AND FOR THE CHILDREN WHO PLAYED WITH THOSE TOYS. The line has not and will not "die". GI Joe is part of our childhood lore and started long before most of you were born. I understand the loyalty to the scale. It is what you know and where your nostalgia is based. I don't find fault with anyone not investing in other scales on the basis of cost or principle of the GI Joe that you know. But just as you 3 3/4" O-Ring collectors preached the same disapproval of the modern era and beyond, there may be a new Joe for a new generation. That is not Hasbro sending a message to a disgruntled collector, but trying to sell a toy amid the competition of the inane video games and the flood of movie toy of the week releases that compete for a parent's dollar. I am a GI Joe Fan. I will try to support the direction of the line in the coming releases. I will also continue my Joe collection with the 4" line, past/present/future, as the centerpiece of that collection. Never say never.

They knew 2 weeks before the panels... so it doesn't matter when they knew... only when we knew and it was at Con, well after they were taking new memberships.

Either way, the solution is that Hasbro needs to stop milking the collector base, since that can only take them so far. And I think that in and of itself disqualifies a 6'' line, since those are even MORE collector-oriented than the current scale. They need to diversify and broaden their appeal. If that means a line or assortment of cost-reduced figures, so be it, as long as they are worth of the brand and help keep the overall brand afloat (collector material included). |

Just because the FSS itself might have the highest membership since its inception doesn't mean the fan base as a whole is healthy. Too much of the contemporary product is "exclusive" merch which is either overpriced FSS kitbashes ($30+ for a repaint and *maybe* a new head sculpt? No thanks!) or convention exclusives that are logistically impossible for many fans to acquire (and are also expensive on top of that). When you're literally making your product too expensive and/or obscure for people to purchase, you're going to lose customer base; the fact that the retail side continues to get half-assed or almost completely overlooked is not helping.

No, that isn't real life, and that isn't the way real life works. I do not want to buy and exclusive that EVERYONE owns. I can afford the FSS in multiples of two to open one and keep one to MAYBE sell someday. And I will charge more. Lots more. I will get the boxed set and a bagged set to sell off the bagged set to pay for my hobby. And I will charge more. Once again, collecting shouldn't be confused with entitled acquisitions. I love that I have stuff not everyone has. I also collect Sideshow Joes... I know, very collector supremacist of me. Tough.
