For me it was back around 1984 or 1985. I was 5 or 6 years and my white whales was v1 Cobra Commander and v1 Duke. I didn't have a Duke until Tiger Force and didn't have a Cobra Commander until 1991. I always called that v1 CC "Shielded" Cobra Commander, I don't know if anyone else ever called it that. I would always look first thing at the stores, I didn't even know anyone that had a 82/83 Cobra Commander. None of the kids in my class, none of my family. The only time I saw a real v1 Cobra Commander as a kid was in a store display. Never once saw a CC on the store pegs.
Back around 2004 not long after I started to collect again I finally got myself a "shielded" Cobra Commander. It was somewhat stupid and silly what I did. I took it to my mothers and Grand Parents houses and went around to all the places I had my epic GIJoe battles as a kid and showed the Commander around the old battle fields lol. One of things I came regret about my childhood was the countless times I passed up on Hooded Cobra Commander. I had so many of those inserts and offers. My Parents would ask if I wanted but it but I always said no. I wanted "shielded" Cobra Commander. Fast forward to 2005 I finally got a Hooded CC just to knock another figure off the collection list. It was then I learned how wrong I had been as a kid and just how awesomely cool Hooded CC is. damn you 1980's me lol. I don't remember when but sometime in 2005 I finally got a v1 Duke. Now Duke had been extremely common when I was a kid. Seemed like everyone in my class at school had one, my cousins all seemed to have one and my neighbor even had a Duke. But I never could find one at the stores. So years later when I saw Tiger Force Duke I could hardly believe it. It might of been different colors but it was still Duke! When I got that Duke I dug out so much of my old early 80's Joes to play with again. Then in 1991 I can still remember it as if it happened yesterday. I was at Hill's (bought most of my Joes there) and saw the new Cobra Commander and Snake Eyes, Tracker, BAT v2, Mercer and Grunt. Those six figures weren't on the card backs or in the catalog. They were a complete and total surprise. I was lucky, I had some money saved up and bought all six. Went back a few days later and got another Cobra Commander, just because I never had one and encase anything happened I wanted a back up. I told my friends about these six new figures and the new CC and they didn't believe me. I brought them to school and they were as shocked as I was when I first saw them. Ironically that back up Cobra Commander was lost to time, no idea what happened to it. I assume the fire that got the rest of my childhood Joes got it too. But I still have the first CC I bought and the rest of my 1992 and some 1991 figures. They were in a shoebox at my Grand Parents and they put them up and saved them for me. Another figure that I had wanted was Talking Battle Commander Cobra Commander. Never once saw it in the stores. Not at Hill's, Harts, K-Mart, Kbtoys or even TRU. I did have TBC General Hawk and Stalker, still have them even, also never saw TBC Overkill either in stores. But lots and lots of Hawk and Stalker. I've always wondered how they were packed per case because of that. |

I was born in 83 so I missed the first few waves. I'd say any of the early characters like Duke, Snake Eyes, Lady Jaye, or Scarlett. I loved my Joes, but it was always kind of irritating that the Joes I saw on TV were already discontinued.

Serpentor, mindbender, buzzer, torch, croc master, crystal ball.
My parents were very religious and wouldn't let me buy certain figures based on their look or file card. For a while I couldn't get any cobras because of the snake in the garden of Eden.

I started with GI Joe as a kid in 87 or 88, my first figures were Taurus and a messed up Serpentor. (Someone on the playground sold them to me for my chocolate milk money.) I started getting more and more after that ( Doing chores, birthdays, etc) The one figure that eluded me as a child was a Zartan. When I moved to Tokyo with my family from 1990-1993, I was able to find the Takara Gi Joes moc and for sale at my local toy store for the equivalent of about 6 bucks. Needless to say, I bought every single character and vehicle that I could get including the Carded Zartan. At the time I did not realize exactly how cool having these was ( I do now) but I was able to basically get what I consider all of the GI Joe all-stars form 82-84 as late as 1993. So pretty cool. The only other character that eluded me was all of the characters my jerk ass neighbor would lie and say he had (most of which were made up, including Python Patrol Hooded Cobra Commander and Tiger Force Scarlett)

I was born in 83, so most of the Joes that me, my brothers, and my classmates had were mostly 87-88 and onward. My holy grail was Cobra Commander V1, and nobody I knew had even seen one other than in old catalogs. I finally got one as my first purchase on eBay back in 06.
I did have a source for other hard to get early Joes and Cobras in the mid 90's. A kid in one of my younger brother's classes had a huge collection his mom kept adding to through yard sale purchases. Me, my brothers, and my best friend gladly traded away newer Battle Corps figures for figures like Flint V1, Bazooka V1, Scarlett V1, Leatherneck v1, and my buddy even was able to get a Night Force Shockwave from the kid, which was quite the feat, since the closest TRU would had to have been the one in Bangor at the time they were released. Oh, and the Canadian Premium Offers insert in 94 was a godsend. Got my Cobra Officer and Hiss Driver through that one. |

I didn't start collecting until 1992. So basically a lot of figures prior to that year, lol.

I was born in 82, so by the time I was playing with Joes, the first few waves had come an gone. In 1988 (in think), my best friend's older brother outgrew he huge collection of Joes. He put them all in a pile in the middle of the floor and let us pick the figures that we wanted to keep. As we would each pick one, he would tell us who they were and their specialties. My friend picked first and grabed Storm Shadow. My first pick was Tunnel Rat (still my favorite to this day). After everything was divided up, I had ultimately passed on Zartan and never owned him until my adult life. I would always play with him when we would play Joes together, but I missed out on owning him. Still one of my favorite childhood memories, but I totally would have grabbed him if I had known that he would come to be one of my favorites.
