I would start with the Marvel run. Then it continues with IDW There is over two issues now. Each different comic company puts its own twist on the G.I. Joe mythology. They are all good, in my opinion.

Start with Marvel, definitely. Issues depend on how big of a Joe/comic fan you are, and how dedicated you are to this project. If dedicated, read everything chronologically from #1 forward. It takes a year or two for the series to really find its groove, though, and a lot of the early art isn't very good. #31-60 is the finest run, so if you want to test the waters pick something from this era.

Yes, a few of them, they are sometimes hard to find... IDW continued to publish them after Marvel stopped after volume 5, IIRC.

Agreed with Nero. The Marvel ARAH is kind of average up until issue 21. It starts getting consistently good around issue 30. After issue 80 or so, there is still some good stuff, but it increasingly starts to go down the rabbit hole with weird special teams, and when you get into the triple digits the art starts increasingly aping Rob Liefield. (Ugh.)
The IDW ARAH continuity is okay, but it doesn't have many memorable scenes and seems focused on maintaining the status quo. There is really only one IDW issue I would call "Great." |
