Doing some light browsing this morning trying to find a source for protecting paint on joe figures.
Bodies bend and arms move and i'm really thinking about a matte finish that will protect the figure from scratches and anything else that can happen to paint. I've read some horror stories about 'frosting' from simply spray ons that completely ruin a project. I'm using a combination of tamiya paints as well as citadels currently. Looking at Testors Dullcote right now but im sure some of the more seasoned vets have a better suggestion - any ideas? |

I use a tamiya matte finsh on my customs. I have not had any problems with it yet. It does protect from minor rubbing and scratches & it removes any glossy tones.

I have had some customs take a beating like factory toys and some flake and peel, and some rub at joints and connection points. I have no idea what I am doing right or wrong because some of them were from the same paints. I really want a good answer to this as well because I have a few big projects coming up very soon that I want to be indistinguishable from factory jobs. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...d15f8bec53.jpg

This is something that was one of my absolute HUGEST issues in my customising. Because I always play with them after, posing and setting up and taking down, and I've got 4 kids, so they needed protected.
First things first, regardless of "sealant" I always sand the elbow, knee, shoulder, joint, etc pieces until they no longer touch. For the record, I've never had a custom suffer because I've sanded down too much. Take as much off as you need until the joint no longer rubs. Early this year, I was at my wit's end and I PM'ed all the most prolific posters in the customs thread about what they use. I received replies from everybody and advice that was many and varied. Some just use meatier paints, enamels and such, some do a light coating of a glue (Mod Podge) that's been diluted, one guy does the Tamiya Matte Finish in LOTS of very light coats, allowing for drying time in between. These all work for those guys and they're friggin' saints for sharing that with me... but none of them work for me. Again, FOUR KIDS, and I don't exactly have a studio here. I've got cats and a bird and a small-ass house and no money. I needed a solution that was cheap yet still awesome. AND I GOT ONE. My wife's hobby is fingernails. Nail polish, tools, UV lights... you name it. She gets shit cheap off eBay or from a circle of friends who all have too much stuff/money, and she's just like me with the mixing and the changing and the customising aspect of it all. So one day I'm lamenting the laborious and impractical task of spraying and spraying and spraying all my pieces just to get a good finish, and how sad I was when the ones I sealed with Mod Podge got wet and it rubbed off and she says, "Give me a figure you don't care about" and then goes to town with my Citadel paints, then she coats him and hands him back an hour later. His joints were tight but didn't wear and a fingernail scrape across the painted area made my finger hurt before it actually scraped up any paint. She'd used a matte topcoat on him. Nail polish. AND IT'S PERFECT. I've become That Guy cruising the nailpolish selections in the pharmacy now, and I have a wide selection of expensive ($10/bottle) matte topcoats (Sally Somebody "Big Matte Top Coat") and cheap shit (Mode, $2/bottle) that I've mixed and mixed and experimented with and I've never been happier. Like, a puppy with two peters happy. My advice, which you don't have to follow but please understand it changed my life, is to get one cheap matte topcoat and one expensive, then get a basecoat (which are usually gloss) or a gloss topcoat, cheap and expensive. And then play with 'em. The cheap shit dries in about 10 minutes and is workable in 15-20, cures to scrapable status in about an hour or two. I use a coat of cheap matte immediately after I've painted everything and then I do another 1-2 coats of the thicker shit (a mix of cheap and spendy) on the joints aftewards. Then I use matte or gloss depending on the textures or 'materials' so to speak. If it's leather combat boots, matte, but if it's armour shoulders, gloss, know what I mean? Apologies for the long post, but I'm just so goddamed happy somebody's asking for a solution and I've got something that's worked so well for me and I never would have discovered without marrying somebody awesome. Good luck, and please feel free to PM me with any questions whatsoever.

I sat back last night in bed, laptop in hand and girlfriend next to me. I decided to read your response out loud since she was wondering why I kept snickering to myself.
She jumps at just about any opportunity to say "I told you so!" when it comes to pointing out my wrong doings - so thanks for giving her the ammo She hears me swearing up a storm almost daily when it comes to my customizing when things dont exactly go the way I want them - more recently the protection of paint. Shes been suggesting 'nail polish coats and mattes etc' seeing as how she works in the local Shoppers Drugmart (chain of local pharmacies) - reading along with me last night she yells out 'SALLY HANSEN BIG MATTE TOP COAT WE HAVE THAT I TOLD YOU SO.' All I could do was look to my right and just give her 'that' look. So today, I'll be that same guy..cruising the nail polish selections...just like you..thats not shameful at all right? One question tho: What do you mean by mix and mixing and mix...are you combining the polishes or just trying different brands? Last edited by Remy; 11-26-2015 at 11:05 AM.. |

Yes the matte will remove the unwanted gloss shine.

One question tho: What do you mean by mix and mixing and mix...are you combining the polishes or just trying different brands? Yes, mix different polishes! I have a 50/50 mix of matte/gloss, a 25/75 matte/gloss and a 25/75 gloss/matte. They're all the same brands, essentially, though when the ratio is larger I tend to use the better stuff (ie, 75% of matte is the Sally Hansen). The effect on textures is brilliant. I did a Wet-Suit custom for Dod Ear on here and the actual wet-suit was a 75/25 gloss/matte but the shoes were the 25/75 matte/gloss. His weapon/backpack was matte finish while his straps and web gear were 50/50. Worked out great at giving a 'shine' where needed and a 'possibly fresh out of the water' look too. Quote:
****WARNING WARNING WARNING**** I totally forgot to mention though, to dab and not brush, because it'll pull your paint off if you try brushing it! At least the cheap stuff does, I haven't tried brushing on with the Sally Hansen yet. /warning Good luck to you guys though. Give that girlfriend a high five from Down Under too.
