British Army chaplin does P Company. Amazon.com: Operation Mayhem (9781409148432): Steve Heaney, Damien Lewis: Books It's about the Parachute Regiment's Pathfinder platoon on Ops in Sierra Leone. I've read both books by David Blakeley so it'll be good to read another perspective on the unit. I've only read the first chapter so far but it's very interesting. The Pathfinders aren't SF (Yet) but undertake SF missions, undergo similar selection and have similar standards. They also train with Tier 1 US units, in the opening the platoon are doing joint training with DEVGRU / Seal Team 6 in a form of Military Freefall higher than HAHO, jumping out of commercial planes at altitudes higher than C-130 planes can achieve. They operate similarly to the Ranger Reconnaissance Company. I also picked up a book about the Australian Clearance Divers. The Divers are our version of Combat Swimmers / Divers. They train regularly with the US Navy SEALs and the best of the bunch work in the Counter Terrorism Units TAG (Tactical Assault Group) East and West with the Commandos from 2RAR (Royal Australian Regiment) and the SASR. They undertake Mine Countermeasure training, Underwater Demolitions, VBSS and Maritime Counter-terrorism. |

Nice. Did Oliverbox say he had to do Parachute training when he was at Bragg? He'd probably like this story.
I read a book about a mercenary in Sierra Leone at the time Neall Ellis who may have single-handledly help the government from being overrun. He mentioned the Paras being there, but doesn't go into much detail in that book. He flew the only HIND helicopter the government owned to combat the rebels and killed who knows how many. Evet since I read Major Bludd's filecard I have always been facinated by the Bush wars in Africa during the 60s, 70s, and beyond. Wild Weasel and I guess the Twins did their time too. Now you mention Clearance Divers in Australia it reminded me of Shark Week last year. Paul de Gelder was one of the guests who happened to be a shark attack victim and a Clearance Diver. They never really went into much detail on the unit though. He still dives with the prosthetics. https://youtu.be/UEhFcO9obhw ..

Benning. I did serve in an Airborne Unit at Bragg, so this does sound like an interesting book. Damian Lewis? The actor?

Zero Six Bravo: The Explosive True Story of How 60 Special Forces Survived Against an Iraqi Army of 100, 000: Damien Lewis: 9781623651374: Amazon.com: Books It's about a squadron strength unit of the Special Boat Service (M Squadron) in Iraq. I only managed to read the first 3 chapters before (stupidly) lending it to a friend and have been waiting ages for him to finish and return it. Anyway, the opening chapter deals with M Squadron boys learning how to use Desert Patrol Vehicles from the guys from Delta. One of the Delta operators was a former Parachute Regiment Brit who married an American girl, joined the US army and after a stint with the Rangers, joined Delta. The next two chapters deal with the M Squadron boys learning how to adjust from a maritime operations environment to the desert. They then deploy to Iraq accompanied by 6 guys from an SAS Mobility Troop. It was a good read(from what little I had read) and looking forward to getting it back, so I can finish it. |

This is in regards to Stretcher's file-card:
He is a weight lifter and speedy medical specialist. His big frame enables him to carry people to extraction sites and or aid stations as quickly as possible. So, my question is, exactly how would that weird little sled of his work? I doubt it flies, but it looks like it would only operate on ice... poorly. Any ideas how it would help him in conjunction with his file-card's information? |

I think it is meant to fly.
Edit: I never owned the sled so I see it has Skis on the card art but they don't show him geared up.

It did "fly" in the DiC cartoons, but without wings, I just don't see it as a real "flying transport device" for carrying the wounded. The skis are so small, that if it was used primarily on ice (or water), it probably wasn't very safe. Perhaps it was simply used to get him to the wounded soldier quickly, where he would dump it and carry the patient on his back as fast as possible??? It just eludes me as to its true purpose (especially in conjunction with Stretcher's description on the file-card)...

Probably hovers to move over rough terrain quickly. More like a speeder bike than an ultralight.
