AFA is a frigging con. Items are worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

In fairness, what were they supposed to be grading? The condition of the inner packaging that the figure is sealed in? Do they grade inner packaging? Because that's all that bubble is.
Toys are either graded loose for the condition of the toy itself or packaged in which the contents are already considered mint and the packaging is what is being graded. Do they grade the individual inner packaging components? I see this as an honest mistake if they are being asked to do something they don't generally do, that being to grade the inner packaging that holds a vehicle driver. |

This is a very unfortunate story. I think I actually remember your original post. I can completely understand where you are coming from as this was such a hard to come by item and really seems to be a grail for you. The $100 insurance you had on it seems like an awful low number for an item that not many have even seen let alone have owned. With that being said I really think CGC/AFA could have done a little more for you. I AM going to have to say that the CGC/AFA does provide a valuable service. I know a lot of people on here seem to think otherwise but having a well established company use one set of guidelines to "grade" things like toys, comics etc makes a hell of a lot more sense in a world where most of these purchases are done online and you can't hold them in hand prior to purchasing, than letting every Tom Dick and Harry saleman grade it as they see fit. I cannot tell you how many times I've purchased a comic or something similar where the seller referred to it as near mint and when I receive it I wouldn't give it more than a fair grade. And yet when you call these people out on it they point out that its flaws are why its only "Near Mint" and Not Mint.

Find their headquarters, burn the place down.
Also, important lesson from al this...never collect anything. It's all headaches & heartaches in the end. Spend your money on experiences, not possessions that weigh you down. If you can do that...tell me how! |

[QUOTE=Magick;4861154]AFA is a scam, their "experts" are self proclaimed. And yet, people send already valuable figures to people who make a plexiglass box and slap a sticker on it. You can make your own box and sticker for a third of the price and it will still hold it's value.
I agree with this person...AFA has NO grading standard for the industry. This is just an idea to cash in on the really meticulous collectors out there( generally the ones whom think that they could make $ on this stuff). No one should give any creedence to AFA packaged items or anything to the like in collectibles. |

Naja, I remember your original post and that awesome sig with over 100 Serpentors on a table.
I'm not into grading as I'm not a MOC/MSIB collector but you're story has always stuck in my mind - primarily as a reason not to be into MOC/MSIB. But also as a reason to never let my PRECIOUS out of my sight ever. No man or woman can tell another where to find their passion, especially in regards to collecting something. To see that this still affects you, saddens me, everything you say about collecting after that event saddens me - I sincerely hope you can find another, it's one thing to lose that passion for collecting and something completely different to have it essentially stolen from you. In closing, no AFA for this guy....EVER.

Hey Tankers thank you for the responses and positive feedback. As most of you asked, why get it graded through AFA? Honestly, I really justed wanted it framed in a plastic display case. Thought their worked looked good on display. Now that I know more about their options, I could of done this for a cheaper price through them. As far as the grading, it was irrelevant to me. This Serpentor never would have been sold and would of been a masterpiece in my collection, the holy grail.
I would also like to add, a Tanker on this site did message me a few years ago. Stated he had a yellow neck sealed on bubble (the second one I have ever placed eyes on). And he did sell it to me for a very low price. He did mention to me that it had a major flaw being the knife was knocked out of its spot and floated freely behind the figure! As greatful as I am that he sold it to me, my OCD could not look past the knife's absence while on display. And finally, how can AFA be a company that supports this hobby? To deal with people's cherished possessions so carelessly and recklessly! AFA's response showed they couldn't care less about their customers...

Why in the heck would they ever take a fig out of its original package? If they were confused on what to do, they should at the very least have called you first!
