All of the Above.
The biggest "draw" of the set (IMO) were Modern-Era (Post-30th) versions of Grunt and Steeler, and they're not THAT popular (and honestly the 25th releases are more accurate to their vintage toys). The Crimson Scythe is big and an iconic Joe vehicle painted in Cobra Colors. They would've been better off if they'd just painted it "Python Style" and called it a Python Striker. As-presented...it has no nostalgic connection and it takes up a lot of space. Likewise with the CHIMERA. It's pretty much THE iconic Cobra vehicle, only painted in Joe colors. Once again, if they'd gone with a "Tiger HISS" or "Night HISS" or "Sky HISS" folks might have been a little more receptive but as it stands it once again holds no real nostalgic connection. It costs way too much for what you get. Which didn't stop me from buying, but I'm dumb that way sometimes. I did get a set, but it was about the most "meh" purchase of all the SDCC stuff I got this year. Hasbro's really milking that Skystriker for all its' worth. |

You all have great points. I think that split into pieces there is enough variety to make it cheaper by the pack so to speak. I just wanted AVAC and Steeler but it's cheaper to resell the Chimera, Alley Viper, Grunt, and Scythe than to buy those 2 individually. There will be someone to pay $30 for the Chimera and $50-60ish for the Scythe. Alley Vipers are always in demand too. I just couldn't believe it was still up so I bought an extra set so now I can sell it off piece wise. The Scythe is great for Crimson lovers and the Chimera with some quick stripes becomes a Night Viper Hiss like the NJCC did.

Oh good Idea!
Sadly I am that sucker who buys the pieces since I didn't think it would be on the Store. I just wanted Grunt. The AV Officer loks good too. I don't need another Steeler and I wasn't that interested in the Vehicles. At any rate. I paid like $40 for the Grunt, another $45 for a set of just the Vehicles and the AVAC only (I really didn't want it and my original bid just beat everyone else) Now I would probably have to drop another $60 if I really wanted the two figures I didn't get. I'm too lazy to try and resell the parts I don't want.

I don't need another Skystriker. I actually have everything I wanted in this set except Grunt. I have the other 3 figures and the Chimera tank. Just not willing to pay $50 for the Grunt.

Yep, pretty much an ok set just not that in demand and too expensive for what it is. I think you need more nostalgic pop at that price. Heck find the mold for the Joe HQ - it's not much more plastic and I would have bought one for $150 - $200 with a couple of cool POC updates to someone. Maybe Sparks and somebody.

I saw this morning that Devastator and the TF Kre-os were out of stock although they came back in stock later. They'll probably be the next to go though. Which means G.I. Joe is now on the bottom rung of popularity with Jem and MLP.

In fairness, I think MLP is BROADLY more popular than GI Joe or much else Hasbro makes. It just doesn't have that hard collector base brands like Transformers, Marvel or Star Wars have (at this stage)

Can't really judge popularity when you don't know what the stock levels were. You really can't even say the Storm Trooper and Dr Strange set were popular because you have no idea how many there were to begin with.

tldr: There's plenty of evidence to conclusively state those particular exclusives were more popular even without having hard numbers. That and it's really unlikely Hasbro produced ten times as many Joe sets than Stormtroopers (for example). |

My dream is for these to show up at Ross for, like, $25.00! :P
That's bullshit sarcasm, btw. My dreams don't generally include much G.I. Joe (sad to say), and the only way they'll hit Ross/et al is if Hasbro overproduced them in the hundreds and HTS decides to dump them. I fully expect them to be sold out within a week, give or take a couple of days. I hope I'm right about that... |
