So, yeah, CC got to crossdress by the end of the mini-series as well. Not the finest moments for him or SE. The return of the yodeling kind of lost me on this one. I believe Ron Friedman wrote the first 3 mini-series and the first episode, but nothing more after that, at least by himself. He is credited on the opening season 2 5-parter in part and the 1987 movie, but apparently the movie credit was for an initial draft that was completely thrown out, and the movie was actually written by Buzz Dixon. I believe Buzz Dixon once remarked that Ron Friedman's approach to Joe was to make it like Roger Moore James Bond, while he and other writers wanted to make it like Sean Connery James Bond.
The story editor on season 1 was Steve Gerber, best known for creating Howard the Duck at Marvel. He was a pretty acclaimed comic writer who had a lot of clashes with the editorial staff. So you can assume he wasn't a hack and had an interest in quality control, which is really the glue that holds season 1 together. I think he said in an interview there were only a couple episodes that went to production without him rewriting them to some extent. Season 1 sticks to about the level of realism you would get from Marvel comics in the '60s-'70s. Gerber left in season 2 and another current writer Buzz Dixon took over. Buzz was actually in the military and his episodes seem to play up the realistic military aspects of Joe more often than other episodes, with a lot of accurate-sounding lingo and debates about rank and stuff. He was not a comic writer, but grew up more on the movie serial/comic strip Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers type of stuff. So while being more realistic on the Joe side, he gets more outlandish in the plots than season 1 does. His quality control isn't as strong as season 1's, but that also apparently stemmed from the fact that they did 85 episodes in 14 months and by the end were having trouble meeting deadlines. Don't get too attached to Stalker. I think he's prominent in the first single episode and then I'm hard-pressed to remember if he ever gets a line again. Quick Kick gets at least a couple episodes centered on him, so you can look forward to that. The 1985 carded figure characters will be the main focus of season 1, with a fair amount of 1984 characters. Lots of 1982-1983 Joes will be nearly phased out now, although some remain very prominent like Wild Bill and Gung-Ho. No Cobras really got phased out, since there were far fewer named Cobra characters. Only the SNAKE Armor bots really kind of disappear, if you count them as characters. One big change is while vehicle drivers like Wild Bill often had huge roles in 1982-1983, some of the 1984 and especially 1985 ones barely got used at all, with some never having one line. I'm still shocked by how little Copperhead was used, because he seems very memorable for what little screen time he had. See if you can answer for me how the Twins just went on national TV threatening America, yet in the upcoming episodes, they're routinely just hanging around in the U.S. and the Joes apparently have no basis for arresting them. One of those things that isn't really explained well, if at all. I think those "twin towers" that turned into a rocket also mysteriously reappear intact for season 1. Season 1 (1985) Episode 06 - "Countdown for Zartan" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Time for my first standalone G.I. Joe episode! -I've gotten so used to the 5-part format, I'm actually excited to finally see a regular episode -New intro? -I see many new faces -Like it better than the "Pyramid of Darkness" version. "Revenge of Cobra" is still the best -Oh yeah, no more mr. announcer -Is this Cobra's new HQ? -The Dreadnocks are recruiting new troops -Storm Shadow! <3 -It's like they're going out of their way to mention the characters names -Impressed with the Dreadnocks weaponry. They annihilated those tanks -Haha, Storm Shadow sure showed them! -C.C. and Destro! <3 -Two Cobra Commanders? -Oh yeah, Zartan! -World Wide Defense Center? -So, Zartan's off to kidnap the French doctor -He did it with the help of the Dreadnocks -He disguised himself as the doctor -Spirit + Freedom = <3 -Lady Jaye looks particularly good in this episode -Wow, Zartan's getting through all security checkpoints! -I think Freedom has figured it out -Storm Shadow just dropped in like that? -So, the rivalry between Spirit and Storm Shadow continues -I always thought Snake Eyes was his rival -Speaking of which, where is he? -Anyway, Zartan found the back-up control room -He's setting up his bomb -Why 35 min? Seems like an odd choice. Why not 30? -Commercial Break #1 -Storm Shadow and Spirit, fighting it out -The lady doctor released Freedom to go and get help -The Joes are training -Stalker! <3 -I have no clue what cajun gumbo is -Apparently Gung-Ho loves it -Doc! <3 reading some comics -Had to look up Recondo, I knew I've seen him before, but I couldn't recall his name -Freedom alerted the Joes and they're off! -Zartan interrupted the fight and knocked out Spirit -The Joes are here -Freedom has exposed Zartan -Zartan is volunteering to be the Joes prisoner -Gung-Ho noticed the watch -Btw, he has a line behind his ear, as if he had hair, but it wasn't colored in -Zartan is locked up in a cell while the Joes look for the bomb -What's this? Spirit is in Cobra's prison -I love the fact that Cobra Commander keeps changing his look during the episodes -Aw, Zatran's starting to sweat as he watches the countdown. Serves him right -Laughing gas. The Dreadnocks sure know how to have fun! -Commercial Break #2 -Zartan's losing it, lol! -He told them the location of the bomb -Storm Shadow switched off the gas, how honorable! -I wonder how long will C.C. tolerate his behavior -10 seconds to go -It already hit zero and the Joes still didn't get to the bomb? -And it didn't blow up? -25 seconds on the bombs timer, strange -Recondo pulled the wrong wire -It's always the red one! -Ah, Gung-Ho was screwing with Zartan's head. Love it! -C.C.'s disappointed and Destro's loving the fact that Zartan has failed -The Commander is leading an aerial assault on the Defense Center -Spirit managed to set himself and the doctor free -Zartan hiding in the shadows, knocked out Doc -He's shooting all over the place -Wow! Freedom caught Storm Shadow's arrow -Spirit has escaped with the doctor -Somehow he triggered a chain explosion. ??? -The whole base is blowing up! -Stalker and Lady Jaye trying to find Zartan -Stalker exposed him to sunlight -Here comes Cobra, shooting up the place -Zartan has escaped -New troops are utilizing their newly acquired knowledge -Haha, the guy passed out when Doc threw the explosive back -Outnumbered? You think? -Spirit to the rescue! -C.C.'s hit! Retreat! -Ending with cajun gumbo jokes Well, that was pretty good! Happy to see more of Storm Shadow and Spirit's honor bound rivalry. Also Zartan showing off his disguises and sneaking in the shadows. Episode rating: 4/5 Stars! See you guys tomorrow! |

Countdown for Zartan is a great episode. Animation is really top-quality. And it has many of my favorite characters.
Sad to say, Stalker will be relegated to background after this, even though he was pretty much the Joe team leader in MASS and the comic. The announcer is Jackson Beck, my favorite voice-over voice. He also did the cartoons and makes me feel like a kid again whenever I hear him. Storm Shadow pretty much only takes on Spirit and Quick-Kick in the cartoon. Snake Eyes is used very, very little. |

This episode is a favorite of mine. This is one of the best uses of Storm Shadow, making him a badass (as opposed to getting his ass handed to him by Quick Kick) and getting into some of his more elevated philosophy. I can only think of one SS episode better than this. Zack Hoffman, voice of Zartan, says at conventions that this is his favorite episode, but mainly because Zartan's name's in the title.
The SE/SS rivalry is non-existent in the cartoon. It's a comic book thing, and adapted to the live-action movies. The cartoon is all Spirit/SS. And SE will never again be featured as prominently as he was in M.A.S.S. Device or Pyramid of Darkness. You'll be lucky to see him show up for a glorified cameo and give a hand signal from now on. I assume the producers felt kids would be bored watching too much of a non-speaking character. I saw parents walk out of WALL-E during the first 15 minutes, presumably for that very reason. The "in the shadows" scene is really well-directed. This, I believe, is also one of the last times Zartan's blue skin color change is referenced. That kind of fell by the wayside. I'm not sure if he's directly animated in sunlight without changing color later, but I wouldn't be surprised. This episode is a real marvel at giving a large number of characters great showcases in just one episode. Dreadnoks, SS, Zartan, Gung-Ho, Stalker, Doc, LJ, Recondo, Spirit, CC, Destro, even Freedom. To have everybody show off such distinct character traits is really skillful writing. LJ is perhaps a bit uncharacteristically hard-edged in this episode. She usually has some softer moments or line delivery. This is more like the LJ you remember in comparison to the more feminine females in the show, but in reality she isn't usually this tough and unemotional. It'd also be cool if you noted down a favorite line of dialogue from an episode. I love LJ's "this bit of fluff bites" here. Last edited by JediJones; 07-28-2015 at 08:44 PM.. |

Season 1 (1985) Episode 07 - "Red Rocket's Glare" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -G.I. Joe time! -We're in a jungle -It's Mogli! -He tripped and dropped something -It has a Cobra symbol on it -Why are all the creatures in this jungle purple? -Roadblock and Recondo! -Is Mogli running away from the Joes? -Ah, he's working for Destro -Not willingly, I assume -Btw, is this the same base that was blown up in the previous episode? -Looks a lot like it -The Joes seem to be clear cutting the jungle -Tollbooth, doing his part -Convenient how every ravine is the perfect size for his bridge -The Joes are making the first move against Cobra, how refreshing! -Blowtorch setting the place on fire -Destro has yellow eyes -He managed to escape with his experiment through a secret doorway -Wait, Blowtorch is Irish? -Cobra's already constructing a new place -Looks like a village. -Cobra Commander! <3 -Haha, loving Roadblock's and Recondo's vacation shirts -Very Magnum P.I.! -Red Rocket drive-in? -Roadblock's name is Marvin? That like finding out 50 Cent's name is Curtis -Those kids got some sweet rides! -Bikers, new Dreadnocks? -Judging by those laser pistols, I'm guessing they're Zartan's new recruits -"No need to land, we'll just step out", an average day in the life of the Crimson twins -First time I've seen a closet in an elevator -I wonder if the twins have suited variant action figures -So, the twins are buying all drive-in restaurants and installing Destro's photon disintegrators in the signs -Commercial Break! -Why do I have the feeling that Mr. Quig is actually Zartan -The Joes are here to protect the burger joint from Cobra -Cutter, haven't seen him in a while -Haha, Roadblock threw out mr. Quig -Uh-oh, he signaled the cobra troops to fire -Yo Joe! Battle time! -Cobra retreated as usual. -They left behind an interesting looking turret thing -The Joes weren't sure if Cobra was behind this? They're so silly! -Breaker & Snake Eyes! <3 -Btw, what happened to Duke? -I noticed Flint's been the Joes leader for a while now -So, is Extensive Enterprises just a front for Cobra's operation or is it an actual company run by the twins? -The Joes payed them a visit, without much luck getting any info -They went back at night -Lady Jaye broke in just as the twins were coming in -They all just jumped out the window -Lady Jaye is holding onto Flint's helicopter -The twins are holding onto her legs -She couldn't hold on any longer, they're all falling! -Dramatic commercial break! -Lady Jaye used a spear to grapple onto the helicopter -The twins activated some bars so they can swing to safety -That was weird -Lady Jaye made it safely to the cockpit -C.C.'s getting some screen time -Villains sure love explaining their plans! -Wow, impressive demo! -The whole fake city was wiped out -At least there's no mess afterwards -The Joes now need to disarm all those rockets -I know I've seen the jet take off animation before -Blowing up the rockets doesn't seem like a good idea -Those explosions weren't as big as I thought they'll be -Looks more like they melted the rockets down rather than blowing them up -See, this I don't get. Lady Jay just detached the nose cone this time -Roadblock's trying to disarm one, but it took off! -Well, that was awfully risky! -Everyone is safe now -The Joes Place, nice! -I'm craving a burger now! X| This one was alright, not as good as the previous one, though. I noticed that Shipwreck and Cutter are interchangeable. Looks like the bikers were just some random bikers. I was kinda hoping they were Zartan's new recruits. Btw, what happened to Mogli? He didn't appear at all after the beginning. I'm also getting tired of the Crimson twins. They were awesome at first, now I just find them annoying. Anyway, I rate this episode 3/5 Stars. |

I think Blowtorch is the only '80s Joe that has a foreign accent. The Irish were one of the only nationalities that had an accent that worked better for heroes than villains, at least until Leprechaun came out. Although his file card says he was born in Tampa, so he must have been raised in an Irish ghetto there?
I think some suited twin figures were made once in the 2000s, but not yet in the modern figure style. I like that the Cobra A.S.P. cannon got some good airtime here. Don't think it ever appeared again so prominently. Duke has some major episodes in this season, so he's not gone yet. Still wondering why the Joes couldn't arrest the twins on American soil after they went on national TV threatening to attack us in Pyramid of Darkness. I love the whole Lady Jaye breaks into Extensive Enterprises scene. It's like a perfectly structured little 3-minute Joe set piece that they could've dropped into any episode. It makes the rest of this episode pale by comparison. Steve Gerber said this was a really funny script with satire on American pop culture, but something got lost in the translation as it got made and the laughs involving fast food joints being commandeered to destroy America just didn't materialize. It was funnier on paper. Not a good sign if you already don't like the twins. They'll be around pretty often. Last edited by JediJones; 07-29-2015 at 10:37 PM.. |

I don't know, I tend to like "Red Rockets Glare" quite a bit. Even as a kid I dug the whole Extensive Enterprises, legit-business-funding-terrorism, storyline. Pretty advanced stuff for an 80's kid's show, actually. Last edited by SmokeBellew; 07-30-2015 at 11:09 AM.. |

The lava scene is one of my most hated scenes in the series. It just seems to be an inexcusable lack of realism. Very few episodes after this ever get that bad. Not a fan of the yodelling either.
Kind of unfortunate that Dusty, the desert trooper, had to have his debut on a space station. Look forward to Hearts and Cannons to see him in his proper element. It's part of the problem with this 3rd 5-parter that it strayed far from realistic, down-to-earth locations and situations. That gets largely better after this 5-parter. Polly is the one truly cartoonish element that survives from this, but at least he's played for laughs. I just hate one later episode where he has a lead role. You'll see more Baroness, Scarlett, Storm Shadow and Spirit as time goes on. Stalker gets pushed out in a big way after maybe one more significant appearance. The same goes for other Joes from M.A.S.S. Device like Grunt, Steeler, Zap, Flash, Tripwire and Short-Fuze. I'm disappointed that Grunt never got more use. Unfortunately Snake-Eyes pretty much falls by the wayside too. I think the cartoon just didn't think kids had the patience to watch a "silent" character for very long. I think Stalker and Snake-Eyes always stayed huge in the comic book, but not so much the cartoon. Also worth noting that Scarlett was Snake-Eyes' love interest in the comics, as opposed to Duke's in the cartoon. And Duke was barely used in the comic book and was one of Larry Hama's most hated characters from his very creation. Tollbooth makes bridges, so I guess he got named that because some bridges have tolls. But he doesn't charge for his. Colonel Slash is one of those head-scratcher characters. Why in the world did the cartoon writers need to create him when Hasbro already gave them like a hundred characters to work with? He never appears again in the series after this. Gotta love when the evil seals show up. Ever since then the media has only portrayed them as cuddly little baby things. We're not getting the full story. It sucked to see Storm Shadow get dispatched by freakin' Quick Kick, who wasn't even a trained Joe, when the comics and movies show that he's even supposed to be a match for Snake-Eyes. The scene was storyboarded nicely though, like most action scenes in this 5-parter. There's a major continuity error in this series. Quick Kick is shown in one of the group Joe team shots in an earlier episode, before he even had his intro and joined the team. Snake-Eyes cross-dressing is another series low point. I did appreciate someone cosplaying as Snake-Eyes in drag at this year's JoeCon though. I guess the Pyramid of Darkness was the original EMP bomb. I don't really care for the music tracks when they start sounding late '70s/early '80s. Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends had the most like that. The generic tracks that I believe Walsh wrote as opposed to Johnny Douglas sound much more contemporary. I like when Douglas' tracks include the Joe theme or the military drums but the rest of it sounds too "Starsky and Hutch." At first I thought I must have misunderstood what was going on. I actually went back just to confirm if they mentioned that The Devil's Playground was a volcano. Yodeling I could do without as well. Dusty in space was a little weird to watch. I'm surprised they didn't come up with a better way to introduce him. Anyway, I'm glad to hear I'll be seeing him in his element later on. Guess the lack of astronaut characters at the time wasn't helpful either. The most astronaut looking character out at the time would have to be Ace. Polly's alright for a few gags during an episode, but I can't imagine him in a leading role. I'm kinda morbidly curious to see that, though. I wish they used the M.A.S.S. characters some more for a while longer, just to get a better sense of their personalities. Aside from Tripwire and maybe Short-Fuze, they're reduced to generic soldiers. In the beginning, Stalker looked like he was going to be a strong character in the cartoon. Sad to hear he won't be appearing much anymore. I already noticed that Snake Eyes has taken a back seat. Do you really think that kids at the time didn't relate to or appreciate him because he was a silent character? He's mysterious, we never see his face. I find this really cool! At least he was more popular in the comics. Scarlett and Snake Eyes, huh? That actually sounds right to me. Duke's problem is that he's a perfect good guy. A character without any flaws is a boring one. Flint is already the Joes leader in my personal headcannon, lol! Quick Kick is an interesting one, but seeing him defeat Storm Shadow like that... it just didn't feel right. I see him as a character that occasionally shows up to help the Joes, but then goes his own way. He shouldn't be a proper member of the Joe team. Oh yeah, the action scenes are great in all episodes, not just P.O.D. I don't remember seeing him in a group shot before, but that's probably because I didn't know him yet. Quote:
"Hearts and Cannons" is a personal fav of mine, but not necessarily for Dusty. Stoner Footloose absolutely steals that episode and, even as a kid, I never understood why he didn't get more air-time.
FOOTLOOSE: No problem, just keep mellow, Miss, uh... DR. WINTERS: Nancy Winters. Doctor Winters to you. FOOTLOOSE: Right. And I'm Dr. Footloose, and that's Dusty up there. He's just an intern. That remains the best bit of dialog in any cartoon, ever. As for the silliness of the toon, I find I don't mind it at all. Matter of fact, I enjoy it. Back in 2000 or so, when I first got back into this, I was almost embarrassed by some of that hokey shit, but that was simply because I was viewing it with an adult's sensibilities and this misguided notion that G.I. Joe was somehow serious bidness(!). Now, it's all a nostalgia trip for me and I keep it firmly where it belongs. As adults, we sometimes forget these are cartoon shows for kids, produced to promote a toy line. I still feel silly sometimes when I re-watch Transformers, not to mention TMNT. But as you said, it's a nostalgia trip full of childhood memories and pure joy. G.I. Joe is a fairly serious show compared to some other cartoons, though. Quote:
Now that you mention the drastic shift in music from Sunbow to DIC I also feel that way over the music used in the Transformers Japanese Headmasters/Masterforce/Victory series.
No offense to the Japanese tastes in music but I detest their choice of video game Atari sounding music on the show. Everything was familiar, yet so different. The shift in music didn't help. I see people praising Masterforce, though. Haven't seen it myself, I never felt the need. Maybe someday. |

Season 1 (1985) Episode 08 - "Satellite Down" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Time for a new episode! -We're in space -A satellite flying by -Breaker! -The Joes satellite's going down -Destro! <3 -Cobra Commander also <3! -They're trying to take it over -The satellite landed in Africa -Dusty and Spirit! Yeah, let's go! -Macintosh? You're kidding, right? -A hut is on fire -Storm Shadow! <3 -Time for another showdown! -Oh, it's a cabin. Sorry! -"Let's see your Kung-Fool"? Dusty, please... X| -Stormy's escaping -That must be Mr. Macintosh -Where did Lady Jaye come from? -Primorts? -Oh, Spirit explained -L.J.'s buggy looks different from the usual jeeps they drive around in -There's a bridge they need to cross -It's one of those hanging rope bridges you always see in movies set in jungles -LJ's going for it -Uh-oh, Cobra trouble bubbles -One of them hit the bridge -The buggy fell, but the Joes got out just in time -The bridge has been destroyed -They're hanging on -They're consistent with LJ's fear of heights -"I hate falling!" -"Falling's ok, it's the landing that gets ya!" -Cobra's returning to their lair -I assume the Joes are contacting Tollbooth to replace the bridge -LJ and the gang are alright -I'm surprised, it looked like a long fall -They're off to find the satellite -Storm Shadow senses the Joes are coming -So they attack -Primorts! -Commercial Break! -Primorts got Spirit and Storm Shadow -Freedom is also injured -Yep, Tollbooth -Oh, they're all captured -It's like Planet of the Apes over there -"This place is sacred, their place of worship" -"I'm glad it's not their kitchen" -Macintosh's got the best lines in this episode -They got the satellite -It's all painted up, they think it's a god -Flint and Dusty found Freedom -Freedom's leading them -LJ's about to be sacrificed -Spirit and Storm Shadow joining forces again -LJ escaped thanks to Freedom in the nick of time -She freed Spirit and Spirit freed everyone else -That's a lot of Primorts -Primort kids too -First time I've seen Storm Shadow lose his cool -He threw a grenade and caused a stone avalanche -Commercial Break again -Here comes Flint to the rescue -The Primorts are coming down -I assume they're thanking LJ for saving their kids -Yes, looks like it -Storm Shadow came back to get the satellite -Haha, the Primort's chief is saying Yo Joe -Battle time! -Wow, Spirit just threw a random piece of wood and broke Storm Shadow's sword -A Crimson guard got hit by a stone in the head -A Primort dropped it from above -Flint's going after the satellite -He's climbing a rope tied to the cobra helicopter -The pilot cut the rope and the satellite fell and broke -Flint's hanging on and now he's fighting the pilot -Ouch! He knocked him out cold! -Spirit and Storm Shadow still fighting it out -They're on the sacrificing stone -They almost got crushed -Storm Shadow's running away :( -Haha, the Joes left a TV as a replacement for the satellite -Btw, where do they plug it in??? -Guess they didn't like the dancing and singing toothbrushes -Yo Joe is their new chant now This one was ok. An average episode, but still enjoyable. How can you go wrong with Storm Shadow as the main bad guy for an episode? Didn't really care much for the Primorts, but they were essential to the plot. Hope to see more of Destro and Cobra Commander soon. I don't want them to keep chilling in the base while they send out others to fight their battles for them. Episode rating: 3/5 stars |

I can barely remember this episode. I've probably seen it just as often as many others, but it just slips from memory really easily. Definitely forgot Storm Shadow was in it. I think they lost me at Primorts. Didn't need to see the Ewok story recycled.
