Lots of Targets in SE PA today got one case each of 6" Emperor wave. 6" figures have never been split-shipped here and these weren't either.
Lots of really bad face paint and weird paint smears on these. Why does a Luke Stormtrooper have red streaks on his thigh? Last edited by JediJones; 05-26-2015 at 09:46 PM.. |

HTS put up Han and Tauntaun for $39.99. How much is Walmart charging? I think the line is still $24.99 at Target. But very few of them here have any shelf space to put new ones out.
As for the Ep7 Stormie, it looks like the kind of design that could never be iconic. Looks very EU and not even as sharp as the prequel Clone designs. Looks like something I'll get tired of looking at very quickly. Lucas had a brilliant eye for design that it looks like the new movies will not replicate. Design-wise, they look like a prequel sequel with the same basic fundamental art design of the prequels but in a derivative, degraded format. Last edited by JediJones; 05-27-2015 at 09:25 AM.. |

LOL. "It's not exactly like my childhood and therefore it can never be as good! And for my next trick, I will extrapolate the quality of the entire film I haven't seen yet based on this one thing!"
Of course the new films are going to "look" more like the prequels from a cinematography aspect, but that's a function more of modern filmmaking techniques than a deliberate stylistic choice. In terms of actual design, it's painfully obvious that nearly all of it we've seen so far SCREAMS "Original Trilogy" (X-Wings, TIE Fighters, Star Destroyers, Stormtroopers, etc...). However that single shot of the downed Star Destroyer and X-Wing in the desert is more emotionally evocative than virtually anything we saw in the Prequel Trilogy. If anything hurts the film, it will be overreliance on the more-beloved Original Trilogy rather than even making any attempt to do something "new" and actually move the designs and story forward. That they will play it too safe and therefore end up coming across as bland and derivative. Last edited by Jmacq1; 05-27-2015 at 01:46 PM.. |

I don't think it looks much like the OT at all despite adapting some of the vehicle designs. The designer is Doug Chiang, who also did the prequels. These designs have the same glossy, ornate, elaborate look to them. The movie is shot in the same way, with the camera lingering on the vast, detailed landscape of the downed Star Destroyer for the purposes of eye candy. No scene on Tatooine, Endor or Hoth was ever shot that way. The camera zipped by the landscapes because all it was interested in was telling the story. The Stormtrooper helmet represents Chiang's interest in stylistic flourish as much as anything. That line on the helmet is unnecessary and just there to be pretty, whereas almost everything in the OT looked like it was designed to be purely functional, even just plain clunky.

Yeah, I am having a hard time deciding if I want to get these guys or not. I do agree about the fact that there is no references to the OT stormtrooper.

Yeah, it's not like there were long shots of Tatooine in A New Hope. Not when the droids are crossing the desert. Nor the nice scenic shots of Luke looking at twin sunsets. It was all zooms and quick-cutting. Wait...are we talking about Star Wars here? The shot of the crashed Star Destroyer is one of the shots that's most evocative of classic storytelling. It's a shot that establishes a locale, a time period, and context. I'm not sure how a person can complain about it. It's about as classic in storytelling as you're gonna get.
That said, I get what you're saying JediJones, but we're never going to see anything as iconic as the original Star Wars designs because nothing will impact film and popular film culture as much as those movies. It's just never going to happen again no matter how good designs or films are. That said, I think the updated Stormtroopers are neat looking. Will I ever feel the same about them as I do the original trilogy Stormtroopers? Of course not. As Jmacq1 states, I think a possible downside to the new trilogy is it being too slavish to the original films, character and design wise. Granted, we haven't seen the film yet, but JJ Abrams has a habit of just regurgitating stuff from the past with a new coat of polish. I personally don't need to see the classic trilogy characters again, but the public seems to demanding them. Right now, the character/ship designs seem too reflective of previous stuff, but it makes sense as a progression from the past. I don't see anything from the new trilogy which makes less sense than the original stuff, though. It sounds like you're building obstacles for yourself to prevent you from giving the new trilogy a chance. There's really nothing to complain about at this point. |

Not really building an obstacle. If anything I'm lowering expectations so I can enjoy them more. I enjoyed the prequels overall (TPM less so) so I don't mind that the design ethic of these will be closer to them. But I do think the movies are going to suffer from the lack of Lucas' canny visual sensibilities more than anyone realizes now. Camille Paglia didn't call him the greatest artist of the last 30 years for nothing. You can just watch him picking through the sample models of Jabba on the old From Star Wars to Jedi documentary and see that he had a great instinct for design. You can even see him critiquing the Yoda CGI sample scenes that his CGI crew was doing on some of the newer DVD docs and see his knack for visual storytelling in action. He struggled with characters and dialogue but his sense of what worked visually in film was as keen as any other director around.
