A couple of us were talking to Mark Weber Saturday afternoon about the TRU QC. I told him the club's Night Force LJ head just looked much better than the TRU one even though it's the same mold. He just basically seemed like he was hearing this for the first time and maybe even like we were crazed, obsessive collectors. I think he just fell back on they'd never know about it if people didn't submit complaints to Hasbro customer service. I said the guys at Boss Fight said they had to keep sending stuff back to the factory when they got things wrong. He said they do that all the time too. He just didn't seem clued in on the issue of QC on the TRU figures at all and didn't seem totally convinced by our testimonials either.

Yep, bingo! I'm sure a lot of the QC issues were probably the result of strict cost controls. If not exactly due only to the material quality itself (as you astutely suggest), due also to the fact that time = money. I'm sure a lot of substandard product was shipped simply because it would have cost too much to scrap and redo a lot.
One thing I have to call BS on is Hasbro knowing nothing about the QC issues. Maybe Weber isn't in the know, but someone on the brand team has obviously been reading the geek boards--see Gung Ho & Green/tan BT--so they've had to have read all the complaints over sloppy paint, funky plastic and etc. Fingers crossed they'll put more of an effort into quality this time around, but they are producing these to meet a price point, so don't hold your breath. And as far as them raising the quality back up to pre-Retaliation levels, yeah, I’m pretty pessimistic too. Despite the complaints, fans still seemed to eat up 50th stuff, regardless. There didn’t seem to be many lines being drawn in the sand. Of course, I shouldn’t judge the state of things by what’s said on internet forums. But still...I think Hasbro will indeed give us more of what we got in 2014, just as they promised: more 50th and more lousy quality.

Probably cause the packs of three have less new tooling so therefore cheaper.

Your complaining? Don't you remember early Ret. @ Target when it was $10.99-11.99 for a single figure?

Mark said Toyrus likes 2 packs. That might be the most important reason for why they do 2 packs. Cost of the package is huge. But if the retailer want single card, they will do it.
For me, I like single cards. Mostly because of the card art. It don't need to be a big one, just like the rise of cobra ones will be fine. |

QC was a company wide issue for Hasbro last year. It's probably due to a change in overseas production vendors or a change in management at Hasbro Asia. Since it was raised with guys at the con, let's hope it will go up the ladder.
To be fair, the factory samples that Hasbro photographed last year looked a lot better than the first run of retail product, so they may have not seen the worst of it.

Yeah, it wasn't just G.I. Joe- Star Wars, Transformers, Marvel, etc. have both seen a sharp drop in both quality control, and the quality of materials used. Personally, I'd rather pay $11.99 for one POC-quality figure than 2 lower-quality figures, or, say, $19.99 for a 2-pack.
Anyway, I think we're being a little too rosy in our hindsight assessment of POC...it had its issues too. The relatively poor quality across all toy lines is ongoing too, I was looking at the Avengers Black Widow/Captain America 2-packs and was disappointed to see that every Black Widow was wearing her eyebrows on her forehead. I also think we can probably count on this lower quality/softer/more bendy plastic being here to stay. I can live with that plastic so long as they quit painting eyes at different heights and angles and learn to paint a little closer to in-the-lines. |
