Royce Applegate died as well he played the security cheif in season 1 before the show decided every character had to be 20 something and hot.
Ironically he died in a fire and there was an episode in first season where a fire had burned his character. SeaQuest had potential and was on track in its first season. Season 2 wasn't bad either but part of what sunk SeaQuest was budget...it cost a whopping (then unheard of) $1 Million an episode to make. Ironically most of the effects shots can now be done better and cheaper by todays computer graphics. After season one to conserve costs they moved production to a cheaper location. Which caused some of the cast to exit. That's when the show made the move to more beautiful looking cast memebers...I think Roy saw the writing on the wall and began publically running the show down. Which was a shame because season two was not that bad, yes it had moved more away from the science of undersea exploration and it had more of a Star Trek underwater feel to it but it was okay. They even added a few new interesting characters. Like the Daggers. I will say this while season 1 was more about education and season 2 more about action they could have found a better balence between the two, because to be honest season 1 lacked action...oh it had action but it was like watching a school lesson on the seas acted out by actors. Season 2 was the opposite...finding a better combination of the two would have been helpful. Also and this started on season one...SeaQuest was pre-empted for ANYTHING. Sports, political parties, news broadcasts you name it SeaQuest was bumped. Making it hard for audiences to watch on a weekly basis. Season 2 was no better. Often episodes wouldn't air for months and then it would air in timeslots that the regular audience was generally not used to. Season 3 was the breaking point...Roy demanded out would not return, (he did do like two episodes) and the show was jumped to the future with some cast returning but again more regulars left in place some very pretty if not talented actors and actresses...yes they looked good in wetsuits...but couldn't really act very well. With Roy out they dragged Michael Ironside in as the new Captain...I actually thought he did well, but the show was already in trouble. The show also adopted a more military feel to it, but to be honest with all the cast changes and schedule issues and even the shift from Science to Sea Opera, to Military Sci-Drama SeaQuest 2031 (as it was known in season 3) was doomed from the first episode of season 3. I've often thought the show would benifit from a reimagined relaunch like Battlestar did. I mean effects are now much cheaper to make, and since the cast was practically a rotating role of guest stars with the two main names passed on who would complain about a re-imagined relaunch of SeaQuest. I'd be up for it.

I really wanted to like the show when it was on the air, but as "BAT" member pointed out, it just had too many, way too many flaws and poor execution on potentially great concepts. A shame really.

Jonathan Brandis...sigh.
If I were that good-looking I'd never have killed myself. Damn. Such a waste. I remember when he did it reading that he was depressed because he thought he'd have achieved a lot more in his career at his age than he had, had always dreamed of being an A-Lister. Thing 'bout Hollywood, though, you can never give up. Look at Patrick Dempsey and Teri Hatcher.

I kinda liked the first season, but when the sub began time traveling, fighting prehistoric-beasts-an-underwater-landslide-brought-to-life, sunken ships haunted by ghosts, meeting gods(In one episode the go into a cave with huge iron doors and find poseiden inside), and other equally dumb storylines I began skipping episodes of the series. And when the sub was taken by aliens to a distant world to fight a war, then returned to earth centuries later I stopped watching it. To me, the series had promise but stupid storylines ruined it. A revamp could be possible but if it happens they should hire good writers to begin with. Not ones who try to use ideas a beginning writer throws away.

It did suffer from a mild case uf Airwolf Syndrome that last season.
