I just watched this last night again. The Final Countdown. ( Kirk Douglas & Martin Sheen )
I have not watched this in about 10 years, but I have always kept it in my video collection. I did get a copy on DVD from my wife as a Christmas present. I have always had a fond feeling for this movie for the following reasons; 1. My Dad served on the U.S.S. NIMITZ Which is the Aircraft Carrier featured in this movie. 2. The NIMITZ looks so much like the G.I.JOE FLAGG. ( Coincidence? ) 3. The Filming of all the Aircraft in this movie is just plain awesome, Mainly the Tomcats. This movie is from 1980, I wonder if it inspired any of the Joe product ? ( FLAGG, SKYSTRIKER ) Anyway, I just wanted to share these thoughts with everyone and Recommend this movie for any "Tanker" who has not seen it.

The thing I Like About It most Is the Use Of Real Military Aircraft And Maneuvers and very little Special Effects.
The "Time Warp" Scenes Were The Only Special Effects Used That I Could See.

Man, I can’t believe this, I was telling my guys about the movie the other night. No one believes me. I loved that movie I’m most likely going to have to buy it on DVD to prove it to them.

I agree, Just to see the Tomcats destroy the Jap Zeros on a mass scale would be awesome.
An Alternate ending for this movie would have been kick-ass !

I bet the Aerial scenes are awesome on BLU-RAY.
Particularly when the Tomcats are circling the Jap Zeros.

I love this movie because the flying sequences were all flown by real pilots flying real planes. None of that wimpy CGI crap. It ranks in my top 5 favorite movies of all time.
A few things about the movie you may or may not have known. 1. The F-14A's used in the epic dogfight scene were brand spanking new. In the "Blue Underground" version of this movie with interviews from the VF-84 pilots who flew the sequences, CDR Emory Brown (CAG) mentioned that the Tomcats were spanking new as in newly delivered, "unwrapping the plastic off of them" new. 2. During the film's first screening for the Navy, some of the Navy brass was very unhappy with one of the pilots for a stunt he pulled where an F-14 executes a lazy roll and falls off into a low yo-yo (at the 5:45 mark on the attached video). LCDR Moon Mullins who flew that high yoyo sequence gave a very interesting commentary on the "comments' he got from the higher ups when they saw the movie. 3. The A6M Zero's in the movie were in reality modified AT-6 Texans due to the rarity of Zero's in flying condition. This scene has to be one of the best aerial scenes to be captured in film. The cinematography, the music, the planes, the action all combined to make one classic and memorable scene.
