John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my all time top ten films. I love Cronenberg's take on The Fly and I actually kind of enjoy Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake.
I though Peter Jackson's King Kong was a piece of crap. It was a self-indulgent, unnecessarily long vanity project. It made me really appreciate the 1976 version. But then, Jeff Bridges pretty much rules in anything he's in. The 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a fun movie. |

I'm a huge Friday the 13th fan. I know that this is about all remakes, but I'm going to sound off about this one. First, it was a great Jason movie, and it was fantastic to have a living Jason for the first time since The Final Chapter in '84. It was not by any stretch, however, a flawless installment. Problems:
1- A straight remake of Friday the 13th would have been much better. You hire an actress like Nana Visitor and give her five minutes screen time? What about the shock of discovering these horrible acts were commited by a vengeful mother? A whole generation has missed that now. 2- The Soundtrack. The original score sounds like a Jason knock-off from the '80's. The Harry Manfredini score from the original films is much better. 3- Jason's outfit. He looks like Trailer Trash, not Jason. 4- The mansion cabin at Crystal Lake. Serously? Why would rich people build on Crystal Lake instead of... well... anywhere else on Earth. 5- Jason kidnaps Whitney. Yeah, if this were true to his character, he'd have chopped off her head and put it next to his mother's. 6- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre style old lady that tells the guy his sister is dead. Just a waste of time in the movie. 7- Jason guarding a pot field. See number 6. 8- The way it ended. Disappointing. All of this said, I liked it. It just could have been so much better. 1. Not that I have anything against hot chicks...but seriously if I wanted to watch a porn flick I'd do that. I wanted a Friday The 13th movie..yes of course its gonna have cheesey sex scenes, but this was so frequent and lasted so long it was seriously starting to piss me off. 2. Jason sucked. So basically you took a Leatherface clone and put a hockey mask on him. I wanted Kane Hodder/VII New Blood Jason..big and bad ass, super human strength and practically supernatural in his comming back to life. I got a cross between RZ's Myers and the new Leatherface. 3. The acting wasnt bad, it was horrific..truly scary. It made ROC look like Gone With The Wind. 4. Since when does Jason take prisoners?? To me that means he's human, if he's human he can be reasoned with..this is why Freddy sucks...guys like Myers, classic Jason that are just machines where you eventually find a a vulnerable spot or outsmart them. Shouldve let this one be....I think this is the 1st Friday the 13th where I DIDNT buy a Neca or Sideshow figure...now thats saying something! |

I'll tell ya, you have some valid points here. I am a HUGE Friday The 13th fan...how can a child of the 80's not be??...Overall though, this was another movie I wanted to walk out of that left me dissapointed. Why?

It was directed by a porn director. It was also one of the, if not the worst in the original series. #2- Somewhat agree, although I'd like to see Jason more like Richard Booker (part 3) or Ted White (The Final Chapter) than Kane Hodder. The last three of Jason movies he was in (Part 8, Jason X and JGTH), he never recaptured the magic he had in part 7. #3- I agree, with the exception of Danielle Panabaker (Jenna). She should have been the last girl, not the sister. #4- Thank you. While I feel Jason's humanity is still there on some level (as seen in part 2 when Jenny pretends to be his mother, and in the Final Chapter when he is duped by Tommy Jarvis), he does not take prisoners, or live with them underground. Yeah, I'm a F13 junkie. Glad someone shares some of my opinions! |

I also found the Wicker Man and Amityville remakes to be utter crap.they both totally missed what made the originals good.

What is wrong with long lengths like Godfather or Gone with the wind? what's the difference between them and King Kong 2005?
And what do you think of modern horror in the vein of horror parodies for teens like Scream or body torture horror like Saw or Hostel? the kind that is raw, tough and goes for the jugular without being tounge in cheek and reflecting 9/11? |
