After Phantom Menance came out and Attack of the Clones came and revealed that Anakin and Padme were going to hook up, my first thought to explain why Padme didn't age was that it was going to turn out that she was a clone of some sort. I thought that could have helped push Anakin to the Dark Side, finding out the love of his life wasn't "real" or something like that.

I think the point was that he was crazy, which you would have to be to care that much about Star Wars to be not only be that upset about it, but analyze it to that extent and assemble the reviews. it was more self-depricating, not misogynistic -- he is part of the joke.

it's kind of like Cartman being an anti-semite on South Park, you're supposed to laugh at him, not with him, so the jokes aren't offensive because you expect the audience to disagree with the character and the jokes. in this sense, you're supposed to see it and wonder what is wrong with the narrator, not laugh that he behaves this way. not to mention, at the end, he gets his just deserts for his insanity when the police come.

I guess what bothered me about using that particular stuff is the same thing that bothered me in "Rise of Cobra" (to bring it back to G.I. Joe. :p). Heavy Duty says to Baroness, "Don't make me shoot a woman." Really? They're on the battlefield, a woman is battling alongside him, and yet he's too good a guy to shoot the evil little lady? It'd be alright for the character if that's was his thing, you know? Like part of his code, or even if they painted him as a chronic sexist. But it's not. It was just an easy laugh to score because the writers either couldn't create a more clever tete a tete or they assumed it was the only thing that would resonate with the general audience. Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle, and Eddie Murphy before them, did hilarious stand-up, and it was riddled with foul, crass, racial, bigoted humor. But it had the context that the devices used in this review simply lacked. What if the reviewer had a naked Jar Jar tied up in the basement? I mean, rape and bondage aren't funny, but there the rape and bondage would have had context, and thus meaning, ie Jar Jar raped me of my childhood, so this review is payback, etc., and then it might have been funny. Or at least OK to laugh. Anyhoo ... taking off my tweed jacket now. Move along, move along. Last edited by ero; 12-22-2009 at 02:49 PM.. Reason: Had to add Dave Chapelle in there. Respect! |

Right. But ... why? Like, what did it have to do with Star Wars? I think that was actually his point, that all his weirdness and rape jokes added to the review were akin to George Lucas adding all that visual garbage and crappy writing to "The Phantom Menace." But the reviewer is clearly smart, so it's doubtful he is very self-conscious about his right to review the thing that he feels the need to hide behind a banner of crazy. I think it was just in poor taste. And I love Cartman. But his consistent crassness and racial humor serves a purpose in South Park.

His analysis of Qui Gon Jin was brilliant. If Obi Wan had been the only jedi it would have probably been better, and if he was already a Jedi Knight at the start.
