Nothing. Are you saying they have no right to be fans of the film and that this guy's 100% right opinion is the only one allowed? What a silly statement.

I enjoy reviews of movies in general, and the Star Wars movies in particular. I love these 6 movies, not just for the good, but for the bad in them as well. Seeing a new perspective just increases the experience for me.

Well, I for one didn't hate Jar Jar. I hated that Jar Jar's jokes and antics were silly to stupid, and I hated his Rasta style accent.
My biggest gripes with the trilogy is that Anikan and Padme fell in love too easily--considering he was a little boy last time she saw him, and he fell sway to the dark side too easily and for a IMO silly reason.

After several years on SW message boards, I grew sick and tired of folks who thought they knew Star Wars better than the creator. You don't, no matter how many times you re-enacted the battle of Endor in your back yard.
I understand if you didn't like the film(s), you can complain all day that it didn't do this or that. But that's all personal opinion. You can't tell Stephen King what should have happened at the end of the Dark Tower. You can't tell JK Rowling to change the middle part of the Half Blood Prince, and you can't tell Lucas that he shouldn't have finished his own story. It's not your tale to tell, it's his. Rant over... for now. Lucas has admitted that he made up many elements of the prequels as he was writing them, so it isn't as if his original idea wasn't changed. and if he changed them, then the expectations that were established based around his original concepts are justified. Qui Gon Jinn is the perfect example. he is completely unnecessary to not only the Phantom Menace but the entire Star Wars story, and wasn't written in until the second draft. so, anyone who is critical of his inclusion to the story because it doesn't seem to fit isn't claiming to know the story better than Lucas -- he not only made it up as he went along but changed elements that he had already previously established. is Lucas wrong to do so? of course not, it is his story, and is inherently a work in progress until put in stone. but it does reveal his flaws as a storyteller when those changes are not for the better, as in the case of the entire prequel saga. but we've had these discussions before. watched this review last week, just brilliant. |

they fall in love too easily, Anakin falls to the dark side too easily, everything happens too easily, that's why the execution of the prequels is terrible (even though the story is very good) -- it lacks any semblance of drama or tension. it is bad storytelling, not a lack of good ideas that plague it.

In my opinion, the production team behind the prequels lacked one crucial member--Gary Kurtz. There was a guy who knew how to be a producer and was not afraid to stand up to Lucas and tell him when he thinks a mistake is being made. More than I can say for Rick McCallum who is little more than a bootlicking sycophant whose job it is tell George how much of a genius he is.
And I've never really bought the argument that "they're his movies he can do what he wants with them." It's true to an extent, but the prequels are the beginning to a story we already know the ending of. There is at least some obligation to play by the rules established in that existing universe. The prequels simply don't. |

there's a great Vanity Fair article about Crystal Skull where Speilberg is all "no I don't wanna do it" and Lucas is all " no no... it will work I promise"
and Speilberg makes him a bet... I think money actually... and well... heheheheh.

I really liked these reviews, thought they were spot-on, but I didn't forward them to anyone because of all the rape jokes and hookers-in-a-basement garbage. I'm not sure why it was in there. I know it was tongue-in-cheek, and it might have actually been intended to prove a point, however distastefully, but to me it was a complete and unnecessary distraction. I mean, his comments about the genius of the opening sequence of "A New Hope," with the Empire's long reach symbolized by the Star Destroyer chasing the small Rebel ship? Brilliant! And I really wanted to send that over to my wife to see, but I just knew she would have been rightfully put off by the misogynistic crap sprinkled throughout.

unfortunately, Lucas was right, just like with the prequels. sure, Skulls was garbage, like the prequels, but people still flocked to see it ($600,000,000 worldwide or something like that), so if the purpose is to make a movie people will want to see, it worked.
