2009: The Renaissance of Science Fiction Cinema
The year is about to end, and I'd have to say, 2009 was the "rebirth" of Science Fiction, with movies like Star Trek, District 9 and Avatar, this year paved way to a newer generation of Science Fiction fans.
-Watchmen: For most fanboys and comic-book geeks, it was finally here. People waited for the right moment for this film to be made, and now with all this technology, it's time to bring the comic book to the big screen. Though the story line was cut down, this film is still worth it to watch for every Watchmen fan.
-Monsters vs. Aliens: A child friendly movie concerning an Alien Invasion ended up good enough.
-X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Though the movie was disappointing, it showed the characters we've been waiting for, and Deadpool will be having his own movie so don't worry much about the Merc with a Mouth.
-Star Trek: Recently, before the film was released, Trekkies were considered as complete nerds and that the Star Trek craze that happened before, has now been forgotten. With this film, Director J.J. Abrams, took the liberty of turning Star Trek into a movie meant for everybody. This movie was a reboot which still respects and gives recognition to past incarnations of Star Trek by creating another storyline by means of "Alternate Universe". Now, Trekkies have gained some respect, plus, a there's now a whole new generation of Trekkies to come in Star Trek conventions.
-Terminator Salvation: Growing up watching the Terminator movies, the war was only shown through flashbacks and flashforwards. Now, what happens and the struggle of John Connor is now shown. Yes, the movie didn't live up to it's hype, but it did bring out the Terminator fans in us while watching it with a number of Easter Eggs in the movie.
-Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: What gave this film a bad vibe, was it's over-complicated plot. But one way to enjoy this movie, is to leave your thinking cap and simply, have fun. After watching this movie and being amazed with the special effects, I watched Star Wars Episode III again, and I told myself "Damn, CG's gone a long way in 2 years"(Considering the 1st TF movie).
-G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra: I know a lot of G.I. Joe fans hated this movie, but it took another step in Sci-Fi cinema. Some said the movie was simply fun and no critical thinking needed, which is actually true. What happened to G.I. Joe, was similar to what happened with Star Trek, even if G.I. Joe's impact wasn't as high as Star Trek's. Sommers did a great job by combining stunts and CGI, especially
with Ray Park during the scene in Paris. This movie is more of an Action movie but it did define the term, 'Military Science Fiction'.
-District 9: I'd have to say, District 9 was a risk-taker. Making a Science Fiction film with CGI in a form of a part-mockumentary and unknown actors was kind of risky. That is why there is a kind man named Peter Jackson to make this move successful. This movie is not something that could simply be described by words. District 9 is a movie only to be judged by experience. The movie is now an instant classic, plus it showed a badass form of Aliens, Mechs and Mercs. And whoever said office life could be so boring(that is if you work in MNU). There was so much Viral Marketing for this movie which made people curious. It's hard to believe that a film could be so great and to think of it, it all started with a 7 minute short film.
-Gamer: This movie is another warning on how humans could be so savage. It's like Death Race with no race and all guns.
-Pandorum: May have flopped in the box office. But it did bring back the Science Fiction Horror genre that started with 'Alien'.
-Surrogates: The Science Fiction concept of 'Fake Utopia' which was shown in Equilibrium was brought back in this movie with great stunts and special effects.
-2012: No movie has dared to show the world's destruction and Roland Emmerich did. But it wasn't so successful due to the Over-Sci-Fi ness.
-Avatar: Innovative Director James Cameron returns to the big screen in this ground braking Special Effects extravaganza which gave the vibes of Sci-Fi's greatest movies like Star Wars, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Trek (meaning the original ones). This movie dared to mix both motion capture and live action making the film, a landmark in modern cinema. This movie is just one of those that should be watched in 3D! Noticing the movie, it was meant to be in 3D! James Cameron waited 12 years to return to the big screen and the wait was worth it. The film IS another Science Fiction Epic. and it's the type of which that you'll have to see for yourself in order to be judged. It's kinda hard to describe the film through words. With James Cameron's Avatar making a landmark, I guess Science Fiction Cinema has returned to its glory for a newer generation.

You skipped Moon, easily one of the three best SF movies of the year(maybe THE best, I need to see it again).

I wouldn't annoit 2009 yet, nothing is good unless it lasts.
Could say Pitch Black brought back sci-fi horror, but nothing really came out after that. So can't really say Pandorum did until there's more in the years to come.

Well 2010 or 2011 is the year for the comic book movies again with the spin-offs and the sequels, so the geeks have at least one or two more years left in their heyday.

I thought 77 was the Renaissance, actually showing that Sci-Fi could work out beyond a bunch of damn dirty apes or star fetuses.
