Streets Of Fire from 1984. Not sure how this little gem has stayed below my radar all these years, but I loved it.

I wanted to talk a bit about Endgame, not the movie in particular--NO SPOILERS--but about the impact it has had on me. After a decade of MCU "superhero" flicks, I'm struck, surprisingly so, by the emotional attachment I feel for them. It has got me thinking about superheroes in general, that genre in film and whether or not the films making up the MCU are actually superhero films at all. I don't believe they are. Not that that matters. There's nothing wrong with superhero movies, and the pretentious dinks decrying them as the bane of modern cinema are all sorts of wrong.
At their core, every MCU flick has a character-driven story and those characters just happen to be "super." Granted, many things happen to those characters that wouldn't happen to the not-so-super, and they are able to respond in super ways, but just as much--if not more--stuff happens to them that is of the regular, mere mortal variety. Tony Stark, for example, is a man of tremendous brilliance (super) and with tremendous issues (not super). I've actually known people in real life who are varying degrees of Tony Stark. And beyond the CGI and super-fights and sci fi/magical hokum and fan service, that's what the MCU really got right. We can, and do, relate to these characters in a very real-world way. "Black Panther" could have been told without the superheroes. The Ant-man films are comedy heist capers. Cap's films have been war/espionage/romance tales. GOTG was something altogether different, equal parts comedy and space opera. I could go on and on, film by film, but the important thing is that they've all been imbued with the sort of emotional heart that exists only in the real world of us non-super slobs. Strip away the capes and these stories, all of them, could still be told. They did such a marvelous (pun/no pun) job character-building, I find myself actually wanting to see a film just about Scott, Hope, Cassie, et al, and not about Ant-man, The Wasp and Pym particles. That, right there, is really saying something. Am I saying the MCU is high art, cinema-verite? Nope, not at all. What I am saying is that they resonate on a human level because the stories are told on a human level. Well done, Marvel. Fuck the haters. Last edited by SmokeBellew; 04-25-2019 at 08:19 AM.. |

Not for nothing did Marvel have a slogan at one time in the 1990s "Putting the character back into comics"...

Ant-Man and Captain America The Winter Solider. Maybe I will rewatch the first Avengers before Endgame depending on how much time I have.
