Glory
There's a bit of overlap here, between this film and the Gods and Generals/Gettysburg 2-parter. Glory occurs concurrently with the plot of Gods and Generals and the ending battle actually takes place about two weeks after Gettysburg. However, Glory begins with the Battle of Antietam and the majority of the film takes place during Gods and Generals, but before Gettysburg, so I decided to split those two films and put this one between them. Glory is the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the earliest regiments in the Civil War comprising of mostly black soldiers, a large number of which were recently freed slaves from the Confederate States. The film details the creation of the regiment and it's participation in the Battle of Grimball's Landing and the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, the latter of which saw the regiment suffer heavy casualties, including the death of the regiment commander, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. This is a pretty good movie and a must-have for any Civil War aficionado. The acting is all pretty good, with standout performances from Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington (who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor). Cary Elwes and Matthew Broderick also give good performances, as does the late Andre Braugher, in one of his earliest roles.

Gettysburg
Sticking with the Civil War, we have, quite possibly, the greatest movie ever made about the Civil War. It only covers a single battle, but it is so in-depth and incredibly well-acted, that it's hard not to put it in the conversation for greatest war movie ever made. Gettysburg was a three-day battle, from July 1st-July 3rd 1863, which is widely considered to be the turning point of the War. It lasted nearly another two years after this battle, but the Confederacy was never again able to invade the North or threaten the Union capital and were essentially in retreat for the remainder of the War. The key moment of this battle had to be the Confederate assault on the Union left flank at Little Round Top. If they had collapsed the flank, the entire Union army would have been exposed and likely defeated, leaving an open path to Washington. The fighting was so lengthy and brutal, that the defenders, under Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, eventually ran out of ammunition and had to launch a desperate bayonet charge to fight back the Confederate assault. The succeeded in routing the Rebels and maintained control of the flank, until they were eventually relieved. Chamberlain was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.
