Alien: Covenant. I was a Prometheus fan. This one tries to split the baby in every way for Prometheus fans and non-fans and fumbles the ball from the fan perspective. There is enough Prometheus-like "secret origin of the aliens" that Prometheus-haters will still hate. At the same time they write out Elizabeth Shaw from the storyline, who was a character the Prometheus fans loved and I don't think anyone really hated. The new female lead does not measure up to Weaver or Rapace in any way. She's almost as unimpressive here as she was in Fantastic Beasts.
The movie is most similar to Prometheus in that it's a similar mix of lowbrow horror thrills with highbrow philosophical dialogue. Where it's different is it has a lot more xenos and xeno-like breeds. But it's clear that Ridley is not enthusiastic about the xenos. They aren't allowed to build up a real screen presence and are heavily overshadowed by non-alien characters. They're more like props. The first act of the movie is a serious retread of scenes we're already very familiar with from Ridley's other two Alien movies that we didn't need to see again. The second act is by far the most interesting, where all of the secrets are revealed and the most important characters get developed. The last act has most of the action. The actual storytelling and plausibility of the movie unfortunately suffers here. What's commendable about the movie is its supreme darkness. This establishes a real mood of supreme darkness, bleakness and despair like no other Alien movie has reached. You'll leave feeling cold and depressed. It's effective on that level. But as something that is going to satisfy any of the franchise's fans or unite the fandom behind it, it's an absolute failure. |

If you ignore the idiocy of the crew though, it's a very dark and fulfilling fun movie. |

The biggest idiot moment for me is no one in the movie even suspecting what the audience obviously knows about one key character in the film's conclusion. That's a big one because it involves the lead hero, the person we're expected to identify with, rather than a random side crew member who is free to be an idiot.

It's not really ignorable. The franchise used to have some amount of intelligence to it. (at least the first two movies) Now, the real deal sequel feels like the imitators (like the recent LIFE).

It's only spoilery if you have already figured out the obvious for yourself, which you will have.
The next biggest idiot moment is the face hugger incident, which the victim had every opportunity and logical reason in the world to avoid. Prometheus only had one scene, the snake handling scene, where people complained about stupid characters. So if they were trying to apologize to the haters of Prometheus, they failed in that respect also. The anti-Prometheus aspects of the movie feel like they were done by a competing director trying to retcon away stuff a different director did. But instead this is like Chris Claremont turning the Dr. Doom appearances he wrote into Doombots himself instead of John Byrne doing it. Obviously the marketing department was in the driver's seat on "xeno-ing" the movie up. But you get an odd mix of Ridley Scott putting in obviously uncommercial, artsy scenes like the flute scene in-between the slasher action which he seems to be phoning in. Still, none of it felt quite as plastic, stiff and inauthentic as The Force Awakens, nor as overwrought and inconsequential as Rogue One. There is a crisp efficiency to the production and execution. Unless you count his participation in the script, there is little if anything to criticize about Ridley Scott's direction here. And Danny McBride is the first guy who ever really pulled off the token cowboy-hat sci-fi crew member. Last edited by JediJones; 05-28-2017 at 02:55 AM.. |
