Dredd - Eh, I was expecting something more. It had the right look, and Urban was great (he really should get some consideration for Batman in the World's Finest movie), and I even liked the plotline better in this than I did in The Raid. But once it was set up, it just didn't advance any. There were no good fights at all. My favorite part was when Dredd tossed Mama's second in command over the edge and then disappeared in the smoke. That was a cool moment.

Cloud Atlas was wonderful. So weird, so many intersecting story lines.

GI JOE Retaliation, which I got on Blu-Ray for my birthday.
Singularly unimpressed I was too: I found it an incoherent hodge podge of not particularly well directed action scenes. Roadblock was cool, as was Firefly (their final fight was actually well choreographed, but spoiled by the cliched "I have your detonator" moment) and President Zartan was fun, but there was so much fanwank, such as the babbled name dropping of the HISS and the appearance of Red Ninjas that seemed added by the writers for the sole purpose of saying "look, we're FANS!". Speaking of the HISS; did we actually get a decent look at it? All I remember were quick cutaways and close-ups of gun turrets. Apart from Roadblock, the only Joes I cared about were, funnily enough, Duke and Mouse. The former's death was badly handled, added zero to the plot and the appearance of Joe Colton was one of the most pointless cameos I've seen in a movie. The Joes themselves were no more recognisable in this film than they were in RoC (less so, in fact) and I found myself not caring when they were massacred. I'll say it here and now: It terms of direction, action, narrative structure, plot and characterisation, I preferred RoC by a considerable margin. Just goes to show you that the 'look' has nothing to do with a Joe movie being 'good'. All just my opinion, of course...

I think that's a completely fair review of it. As a Joe fan, I think both movies were pretty lousy, but I liked the second one more just because it seemed more fun. The extended cut is the better version of it. It doesn't seem as rushed. I think Sommers is a better director than Chu, but this was really Chu's first big movie. He'll get better. I still say if Sommers had just made the Joe's uniforms green instead of black, it would have got him a lot more good will on his film. And yeah, Tatum was the wrong choice for Duke. He's a John Wayne type of character, and that's not Tatum.
