Commando - Ah, a true classic. Still fun to watch. I'm actually more impressed now by how athletic and swift Arnold was for such a muscle-bound guy. Most guys like that are about as nimble as cement truck. I still say they should make a sequel to this with Arnie and Alyssa Milano. They could even use the script they planned to use for a sequel...until Arnie dropped out and they ended up reworking it for Bruce Willis and calling it "Die Hard".
And... Iron Man 3 - Just a hell of a good time. I get the feeling that Downey improvised more on this movie than any other, but it works. It requires multiple viewings just to pick up on every joke. I still think the first was the best of any of the movies featuring Tony Stark. But origin stories always have an edge by being self-contained. I loved how the movie featured Stark more than it did Iron Man. I think Shane Black did a great job directing. He should get some more work from it. But goddamn Jon Favreau...put down the donuts. He was almost as big as that damn rabbit! |

Yeah, I see he's signed on for Doc Savage already. Don't know how that will turn out. It all depends on the star. Then again, I thought Jon Favreau would get a lot better offers based on the first two Iron Man movies, and that hasn't turned out too great for him. I do like his style better than Black's, he's got a better visual style. I think Marvel should have treated him a little better actually. The whole success of Marvel's movie business was based on his work with Iron Man. I see now there's grumblings about the Avengers cast wanting raises. Downey is the only one that's irreplacable. Everyone else can be recast or just replaced with another character. I have a fear that Marvel will try to go cheap with everyone from now on though, after having to give Downey $50 million for the first Avengers film. They'll make money just by having the characters on screen, but they'll get some criticism for it too. |

I think the grumbling about raises was just a storm in a teacup personally.its outlets trying to create shit where there is none because of the huge success they have had.......RDJ has signed on for Avengers II and the rest of the cast are negotiating % increases outside their multi movie deals.
also.....didn't Favreau pass in IM3?I remember hearing after IM2 he wouldn't be doing a 3rd because he wanted to do something else.I also remember that announcement being greeted because IM2 was "shit".IMO it was greatness. |

I think Favreau really wanted to direct the Avengers, but Marvel was rushing to get it out right after Thor and Captain America, and he wanted to make "Cowboys & Aliens" in between. I could be wrong though. I think the reviews of IM2 (which did have some good fights, but the character interaction was grating to me) and then the dud that was C&A, he's kind of being overlooked for stuff now. Though I did just look him up and see that he directed an episode of The Office this season, can't believe I missed that. Anyway, I'm rambling now. Basically I think he's a good director. It's the scripts that have let him down lately. He would be among my top choices for a G.I. Joe movie.
But Shane Black was very solid. I think his best move would be to stick with more grounded, action movies and not drift into anything more sci fi than Iron Man. Maybe he can get Downey and Mel Gibson to do another movie together. |
