I love how people are so quick to pull out the Pocahontes/Dances With Wolves references, but somehow Lucas gets a pass with ripping off Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress? Or Kurosawa himself using Shakespere for most of his movies? Or Jesus and the whole "death and ressurection" thing? That was so ancient Summerian but nobody called Him on it!
Seriously you guys, Cameron's movie was expertly written. Yes, a lot of it is predictable to anyone who's been watching movies for 20+ years, but keep in mind, your kids will be accusing some movie down the road of ripping this off. It's only now in this everything on demand, internet searchable, massive dvd library age that we can act like cooly cynical experts (trans: a-holes). Oh and I watched Gamer last night, fun action flick. |

Avatar used storytelling motifs that have been in play since storytelling was invented, he just did it better than previous attempt. I garauntee you that any movie you site as being "ripped off" by Cameron, I can site examples of that movie borrowing established themes from something before it. |

Avatar has less to do with Pocahantes, visually or story-wise, than Stephen King's "It" has to do with "Flight of the Navigator".

BTW, the guy who played the cat-smurf (I love that nickname) chieftan, was played by american indian actor Wes Studi, who was in (among other things) Dances with Wolves, and Last of the Mohicans. I wonder if Cameron was going for a deliberate homage (which he loves to do in spades). Last edited by Zefram; 01-22-2010 at 05:54 PM.. |

Just saw Avatar and loved it. I went in skeptical and fearing the worst and was pleasantly surprised.
