I watched a very expensive... full out Science Fiction, 3D version of Disney's Pocahontas. Right down to the Grandmother willow tree.
You guys know it as Avatar of course. really shouldn't be surprised that the man who brought us the greats... Titanic, Batman and Robin, etc... didn't bother much with writing his own story for his mega-10 years in the making movie. In his defense, no one said the movie was great because of the plot/writing... they said it was visually exciting and the sound was amazing. and that was true... it was pretty to look at. but we have a saying in my house, a shiney turd is still a turd. |

I love how people are so quick to pull out the Pocahontes/Dances With Wolves references, but somehow Lucas gets a pass with ripping off Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress? Or Kurosawa himself using Shakespere for most of his movies? Or Jesus and the whole "death and ressurection" thing? That was so ancient Summerian but nobody called Him on it! Seriously you guys, Cameron's movie was expertly written. Yes, a lot of it is predictable to anyone who's been watching movies for 20+ years, but keep in mind, your kids will be accusing some movie down the road of ripping this off. It's only now in this everything on demand, internet searchable, massive dvd library age that we can act like cooly cynical experts (trans: a-holes). |
