Just got back from an advance screening of Inception. Simply brilliant. Deserves a second viewing.
And also saw Predators and Brothers. |

Please list... I'm curious.
I mean, the storyline was wonderful. The acting, well it wasn't top-notch but better than alot of what I've seen recently. With exception to the faces in the masks, the CGI was absolutely amazing. I watch ALOT of movies. And am a pretty tough critic. So it takes alot to actually "WOW" me... Avatar did indeed WOW me. The story was almost line for line the same as Pocahontas (even to the point of similar names) see also Dances with Wolves and probably a dozen other films. Nearly every concept in the film appears to be stolen from another source, be it other movies (see above) or novels. (One unpublished Chinese authors work from 1997, Russian writers the Strugatsky brothers soviet era works (Eerily similar concepts and names) and even a Paul Anderson novel from 1950’s) We’ve seen it ALL before, and better, every time. I will be the first to say that the film was visually very pretty. But that was all it had going for it. Even my wife – who is entertained by almost anything, it needs only movement and pretty colours – hated the film. Most dialogue seems to go in one ear and out the other with her, but even she complained. And still does when it is brought up. Any other film and she wouldn't bother, but this struck her as particularly bad. Films are my wife and my shared hobby. We watch several every week - old, new, good, bad… terrible. Sometimes the bad films are entertaining because they are bad but I just wasn’t entertained by Avatar. I was disappointed even, maybe disgusted. I wanted to be impressed. I went into the film hoping that it would be great, expecting it, even. I saw it early and I hadn’t heard anything bad about it at that point. I made up my own mind about the quality of the film. I’m not jumping on the bandwagon because I hate all things successful or all things not Batman or whatever people are accused of for having an opinion these days. I am genuinely surprised by the number of people that love it. - Ian Last edited by Exciter; 07-14-2010 at 06:02 PM.. |

Saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with the missus. Found out it was originally called "Men who hate Women". It was aptly named. there is alot of rape in the movie, which i generally dislike because it makes me agitated and angry. The plot was pretty easy to figure out ahead of time as well. I hear they are doing an American adaptation of the story, i hope it is better. Or i hope the missus doesn't drag me to it.
