Still watching my Bond DVDs, but took a break to watch two new movies.
Star Trek (2/5) Visually it was nice to look at and I enjoyed Karl Urban's performance -- or rather, blatant imitation -- of DeForest Kelley's Dr. McCoy, but overall I didn't care for Abrams' new hyperactive take. And please, stop putting Simon Pegg in movies. Drag Me To Hell (2/5) Was really enjoying this old school horror flick until the twist ending, which felt unnecessary and had more of a "Ha ha, fooled you!" vibe than anything else. I was ready to rate it 4 or maybe even 5 until then. |

Crank 2: High Voltage.
This is a movie that spits in the face of realism... right before it goes up and punches logic in the face, urinates on reason, teabags the laws of physics, then gets drunk and thows up on good taste. And it works. Somehow it still works. Never in my entire life seen a movie that depends on the "Rule of Cool" so completely that it throws out almost everything else. It's like somebody watched Arnie in "Commando" and said, "This is a great movie, but I think it takes itself a bit too seriously." At one point Statham catches up to his target in a power reley station, gets knocked into a terminal, and gets hit with friggin' lightning from every direction. It immediately cuts to a battle between giant rubber monsters made to resemble Statham and his opponent smashing through carboard sets, and then back to "reality" again. It's that kind of movie, and it works. It's a fun and staggeringly guilty pleasure. Statham isn't just tough, the movie opens with him landing on a car from 20,000 feet up and surviving, and ends with him confronting the big bad ON FIRE! Don't try this at home... unless you're Chuck Norris. Last edited by Zefram; 12-15-2009 at 07:57 PM.. |
