Yeah, I just saw it again yesterday. Gotta say even with all of it's qwerks and plot holes, it was a lot of fun.

I thought you said you were done "debating".
Quote:
An academy award, well I hate to break it to you but that means nothing, absolutely nothing! BUt if you want to go by awards Lucas was awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award and with the exception of Spielberg none of the other Directors you named have yet to receive this honor.
Really, anyone can look up the lists of the number of times Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese were nominated/won Academy Awards compared to Lucas, but yeah, I guess the most prestigious awards in the business as voted by their peers in the industry mean nothing, absolutely nothing! Great argument there. Quote:
But to address the movies you pointed out, here goes:
What boxing movies didn't exist? because Rocky came out three years before Raging Bull. Oh right Gangster movies didn't exist? Because The Godfather was out 18 years before Goodfellas. But crazy stalker films certainly could not have existed before Taxi Driver? Certainly you had to get one of the three right, nope! Cape Fear was out in 1962 while Taxi Driver was in 1976. Which incidentally lost to Rocky. So with your thoughts of winning an academy award in play Rocky is a superior film to Taxi Driver!. Quote:
What I should have been arguing is that if a person with film knowledge was to make a list of lets say the top ten people who have shaped film and the industry, I would certainly put him on that list. No way would I put the likes of Tarantino, Woody and Martin S. on that list. All great directors but not pioneers in film.
Quote:
And remember Spielberg does have some clout, if he and Harrison Ford had issues with vine swinging Mutt or Refrigerators that can withstand a nuclear blast they certainly could have put their collective foots down. The low points of Kingdom needs to be shared by all three of them.

Found these - not saying I agree with them, but it's an interesting read at least...
http://www.totalfilm.com/features/th..._ever_-_part_1 http://www.moviemaker.com/directing/...all_time_3358/ Here's one that's a bit more fair to your argument and a bit more generous to Lucas. Although it's on some weird site that lists the individuals' religions for some reason, it's apparently from a book on the subject of people in the film industry as a whole, not just directors: http://www.adherents.com/movies/Film100.html Last edited by DPrime; 05-26-2008 at 03:59 AM.. |

Yeah but what movie doesnt have some flaws???
In Jurrasic Park the whole park is powerless but if you look in the background you see the fans moving..........There is no sound in space but yet you hear lasers...and hear explosions.....movies are for make believe......fantasy......to get our minds off everyday worries.......I liked the movie...will i see it again.....yeah when its on DVD.....or my friend has a burnt copy.... Just be glad Indy came back.......instead of A Howard The Duck part 2....and no one better take up for that crappy piece of crap..... Quote:
Revenge of the Sith Did not suck......and slaughtering Children (younglings) and all the Jedi didnt seem childish to me........hell it freaked my cousin out.........and dont forget about a burnt up Dart Vader that sure looked like an adult issue to me.....then you have Yoda throw his saber into a troopers chest........seemed pretty hardcore to me........
the success of the Star Wars prequels or Indian Jones never was dependent on the quality of the movies because the audience was already built in because of the quality of the past movies, so their success in no way vindicates Lucas' ideas, it simply supports what we already knew -- there was an audience built up based on past success, not present ideas. Lucas could have did a P Diddy and too a video of himself on the toilet for two hours, slapped the Star Wars logo on it, and people would have rushed in droves to see it. heck, you can argue that was in fact what he did with the Star Wars prequels anyways. Skulls could have been very good, the aspects that made it bad didn't span the entire movie, they were simply so stupid that they did hinder the points that were enjoyable. |

not even comparable. huge difference between technical production flaws and terrible story elements.
whether it sucked or not is subjective. I'll agree the consensus is that it is the best of the prequels, but being better that Phantom or Clones doesn't make it a good movie. also, containing graphic elements does not eliminate the childish slapstick elements in it either. I never contended the movies are childish from beginning to end, so why you have jumped to such conclusions is confusing, but without it you have to admit you haven't disputed my claims. the success of the Star Wars prequels or Indian Jones never was dependent on the quality of the movies because the audience was already built in because of the quality of the past movies, so their success in no way vindicates Lucas' ideas, it simply supports what we already knew -- there was an audience built up based on past success, not present ideas.
