Inglourious Basterds quite honestly had me intrigued. There was an old Italian movie of the same name, and Tarantino had some appreciation of that movie. I almost assumed he was going to remake the film. Of course, "remake" is a strange term. In this context, I can remake the cake I had Thursday by throwing batter, urine, and a pager into a bonfire.
The movie is basically about one thing: Jews getting their revenge on the Nazis. The main characters are a Brad Pitt (A Jewish redneck who mutilates Nazis by either scalping them or carving swastikas in their forehead) and Some Blonde Chick (A Jewish girl who watched her family get killed and then somehow got a theater and a black husband in Nazi-occupied France). All the Big Nazis, including Hitler, are watching a movie about some Nazi sniper killing a whole shitload of people. Already, I can tell you are thinking that this makes no sense whatsoever, and it's retarded. Well, it is. But diehard Tarantino fans will rush right in to defend this piece of crap movie; because when Tarantino makes a piece of crap movie, it's because he meant to make it a piece of crap, and that makes it genius- or at least that's what a dumbass would say. This movie is BORING. I can't emphasize that enough. I left to get food, go to the bathroom, and even smoke a cigarette and I came back to the same scene I left, and they were still gabbing on and on about something. Tarantino seems to think that this dialogue in his movies is "witty", and possibly "interesting", but the rest of the world expects there to be more to a film than watching people jabbering. I'd make a comment about the soundtrack, but it's mostly re-cut tracks from Kill Bill. Seriously. It delivers graphic violence somewhere in-between my naps, but most of it is done on par with 1970's B-movies. Once again, I'm sure that's what he meant to do, so now every dumbshit that likes his movies thinks it's the greatest idea ever. If you're expecting historical accuracy, you'll find more of it in Gladiator and 300. I'm sure this was also his intent, but I'm pretty sure that if you're going to make a movie about Jews, Nazis, Hitler, WW2, or anything else involved, you may want to check some of the accuracy of your movie before you put something out. For instance, every German soldier is considered a "Nazi", but that makes as much sense as every American soldier being a Republican. Tarantino may have done well to also research the timeline pertaining to America's discovery of the genocide. Also, it helps to make your heroes less of a war criminal than the enemy. Overall, this movie is a snoozefest. I don't give a damn what the Cannes fruitcake fairy festival thinks of it. It's a ridicuously stupid movie, and it's barely worth a rental. |

This movie is going to kick so much ass I can't wait!!!! Whatever is in this movie, I don't know except for what the trailers have shown but I can tell this is going to kick ass in so many ways!!!
Tarantino delivers!!! This film is obviously overblown and entirely fictitious but don't let that get in the way of suspension of disbelief! This is going to supposed to Blow Kill Bill away. It is just a violent rump through France as these US soldiers go killin and torturing Nazis! If you can get into violent movies like I can, I know you will do fine! Carving swastikas into Nazi's foreheads, beating them with baseball bats. Good Stuff!!!

Everyone has their own opinion on the movie but most are grading it an A (both critics and regular people who've seen it).
I haven't watched it yet so I don't have my own opinion but I hope to catch it sometime within the next few days and see how crappy it apparently is....or isn't. I used to hate Brad Pitt but I've grown to enjoy him in his latest movies.

Can we refrain from insulting other people's intelligences when writing movie reviews? It's all opinion.

The thing with Tarantino, is there's a pretentious'ness that he's seen more movies than you.
he assumes you've never seen a movie that was made before 1984, so he's thinks it's ok to just jam in as many cliches that he can. Kill Bill was just Every Kung fu flick i've ever seen, Death Proof was the car with oh so snappy dialogue Foxy Brown was just every blaxploitation flick. and this one looks like Illsa she wolf of the S.S. and every other ww2 exploitation flick of the 70's He peaked with pulp fiction, and every thing since has just been rental fodder. Then there's the whole aspect of his soundtracks. Hip bands he's "discovered" he's just played himself out. don't get me wrong, it doesn't look bad per say... it just looks like too much more of the same.

I will see it just because you said there is Jewish redneck in it. After I see it I may have to try and find a recipe for kosher possum stew. Its all in how you butcher the possum.

This review was a little harsh and definitely one sided. I saw the film last night and it wasn't bad. It wasn't great either but it certainly wasn't an absolute shit-fest as the original posted has implied.
Tarantino does what he does and he actually pulls it back a bit in this film. It's the least Tarantino-ish movie I think he's ever made. Brad Pitt is very funny in his role and you can tell he's having a blast! Cristoph Waltz who plays Col. Landa (the jew hunter) is absolutley fantastic! I would easily put his performance in this film above Javier Bardem's Anton Shigurh in No Country for Old Men as a real life monster of a villain. He's the main baddie in the film but I kept finding myself wanting to see him pop up in every scene. My biggest complaint about the movie is what I'm sure pissed of the OP of this thread: the talking. Yes, this is without a doubt a dialogue driven movie. This isn't an action movie at all. It's a suspenseful detective story and Sherlock Holmes is a Nazi. That's basically how it plays out. So if you've seen the trailer and you thinks it's gonna be a rip roaring, nazi-smashing, bullet's flying good time!..........then skip this movie. Seriously. There is almost none of that present. If you like Tarantino and what he does with a movie, then check it out. |
