I"m totally going to see District 9. I've been more excited about it that I was for G.I. Joe (yeah, I had pretty low expectations). I don't think District 9 was targeted towards G.I. Joe fans, specifically.
An alien movie? That's a pretty broad appeal. I figure it should do very well. I don't think it has a thing to do with G.I. Joe.

sometimes it seems like some people that post on here haven't stepped away from their computers except to go to the toy store of to go see the movie.

District 9 is not a major movie this summer. it is a small movie, made for about $30 million and hasn't received a ton of marketing or hype. if it pulls in $30 million this weekend, that is good haul for an non-event August film.
there just is no comparison between it and G.I. Joe. trying to play it against ROC is just silly. District 9 has an audience, and will do well for what it is. lack of interest for I. Joe outside of the immediate audience is what is going to do ROC in, not District 9. |

A peek at some other boards indicates that District 9 is tracking for a $30 million dollar opening.
That will almost certainly put it above Joe (and recoup its' stated production budget in one weekend), unless Joe has an unusually small drop between weekends. It probably didn't hurt that Entertainment Weekly named it the "must see movie of the summer" last week. The media today is less about informing the public, and all about shaping their thoughts. I haven't seen it yet, but I already feel so bad for those poor aliens. I've completely changed my mind, District 9 is going to be a huge success. Just like "A Sound of Thunder". Hope everyone that's seen that one enjoys the comparison. |
