I was watching Dr. Phil because it's about "Loved Ones With Obsessions" and the guy is a huge Star Wars collector and the wife hates it, so to get back him and his huge collection, she decorated the bathroom with the Little Mermaid stuff and is seeking Dr. Phil's help in making the guy get rid of his collection. I saw the samething a few weeks ago on the Tyra Banks Show, except it was a guy and his Hot Wheels collection and on Tyra, they even gave the obsession a name, "Peter Pan Syndrome". Man they crack me up.

Screw Dr. Phil and Tyra. That's a prime example of one of this countries biggest problems. If I don't understand what you're doing or why your into it than something must be wrong with you. This kind of shit drives me crazy. Maybe I don't like opinionated bald guys, so obviously Dr. Phil should wear a wig and shut up.

Man I'm glad my wife wasn't home watching this episode. I have a feeling I'd come home to find my Star Wars room emptied and several full garbage bags out by the curb.
Peter Pan my ass.

There was a printed article on something along these lines, and the article also referenced collecting as "Peter Pan Syndrome".
Apparently we all have a problem growing up - Either we grew up too fast, had a crappy childhood or *enter issue here*. Can't I just enjoy G.I.Joe and not be associated with some form of mental issue? Why do coin collectors and stamp collectors get love? Because their items increase value over time? Someone needs to run up on Tyra in a PDD Costume and show her who wears the daddy pants. |

I'm pretty sure it is very easy for some folks to let toy collecting ruin their relationships, their credit, their mind, their lives, just like alcoholism, gambling, drug addiction, sex, etc. Any activity a person likes to indulge in can take over their lives. Doesn't mean it has to. Doesn't seem like it has ruined any lives here, but I guarantee that it has.
Peter Pan Syndrome is not necessarily the right thing to call it, though, it's just compulsive/addictive behavior.

See what those hosts have failed to realize is that anything can be addicting. Not so much physically, but mentally. Just because a grown man buys toys means nothing. Now a grown man whose hobby has gotten to a point where its getting in the way of living life, thats a problem. However its not right for talk show hosts to look down on collectors as if something is wrong. A man who doesn't buy toys isn't more normal as one who does. Addiction takes many forms.
Something tells me they just brought it up because its a subject not many have brought up before. I suppose they will never air an episode about women buying clothes and spending enormous amounts of money on certain pieces either.(Not all women do that, however I bet its certainly too touchy for the hosts to bring up, yet suddenly its "okay" for them to call us adult collectors out). |

Pissin' me off. Its funny how some people with money fill up their houses with exquisite paintings and other fine pieces of artwork, but rarely, if ever, get any shit for it. I guarantee you that my nicely displayed 25th ann. gi joe battle with the file cards behind them displayed nicely on a shelf gets a hell of a lot more compliments and brings me, my friends, and my girlfriend, a lot more happieness than any painting would. And the funny thing is, my gi joes aren't even a fraction of the price. And, of course, they look waaaaaay cooler.
