I would not wish death on them for their opinion. That being said, Dr. Phil, Tyra, and the rest should really focus more effort into real problems in life. We as collectors could be doing far worse things with "OUR" money. We could be out buying drugs, but no we're content to spend our money on toys. To the best of my knowledge there isn't a big population of toy collectors in the prison system. As far as the "Peter Pan Syndrome" goes, I don't want to grow up if that means I have to act like a pompous ass who judges people for a harmless collection of plastic men (and women). I always regreted getting rid of my original collection of Joe's, and have spent a fair amount of money to get close to what I had as a kid. I will admit it can be addictive, and it is a compullsive issue, but it really does give us some sort of happiness, and a sense of nostalgia. Buy what you like, spend whatever amount you want. For the women who bitch at their men for spending money on toys, would you rather have a happy man in your life, or one who is full of anger because his parent's made him give up his childhood too soon, and beats the hell out of you on daily basis because you didn't have dinner made on time? Give that some thought the next time you feel like bitching. Yo Joe!!!

Don't we have enough problems to talk about than toy collectors. Dr. Phil and Tyra must not have anything better to discuss. Personally i think toy collecting is very exciting and hunting for all the figures is a great way to exercise when you are running to the toy isle. The point is, we have our little group just like others do. Ours is collecting things that we grew up with. Yeah we have our problems, but we don't go on tv and tell the world that Dr. Phil and Tyra have a problem showing quality entertainment...

Considering the fact that I didn't even grow up with these toys (Born in '89) I have no idea how I can be suffering from "Peter Pan syndrome".
Besides, most people grow up to like things that they enjoyed in childhood anyways. Mechanics could have played with toy cars, sculptors could have played with play-doh, and pilots could have played with planes. We still take the same kind of enjoyment from our childhoods but since ours is more directly influenced I guess we're crazy. A bunch of crazy well-adjusted people who are generally very kind and understanding to one another. Yeah, we're the bane of society.

I consider Dr. Phil to be a crackpot, so to me everything he has to say is crap. Collecting action figures is a hobby just like sports, music, etc. End of the story.

Before I got back into G.I.Joe with this 25th business, I collected 1/6 scale military figures, which some of you may be aware of. Now, these figures from Dragon, DID, BBI, and so on can cost a fortune, and I've seen some collectors that scare the crap out of me (such as those who exclusively collect WWII Germans and then complain on forums about their wives not 'understanding'), and admittedly, I have probably spent a small fortune on my collection over the five years I've been into that hobby. However, I have seen some pretty sad cases were married collectors have to restrict themselves from buying what they want, or worse, having to part with their collections entirely; why I find that so sad, is because I've seen many 1/6 scale figure collections being sold as lots on eBay because they led to divorces or separations from girlfriends, and there's always a hint of resentment. I suppose I'm blessed doubly, since I not only have relationships with girls that respect my hobbies, and I've been blessed with enough disposable income for my collecting to never interfere with the rest of my life, but certainly there are a lot of relationships out there that are on rocky groud just 'cause we love collecting what we love. Dr. Phil should enlist in Cobra as Psyche-Out's nemesis. |

Watching the show, the guy did do one thing bad. He was ignoring his wife. Whenever she wanted some "quality time" he'd shrug her off and bounce down to the basement to spend time with his figures. Something like that, I could see a problem arising. But then she did know what she was getting into, BEFORE they got married.

Funny enough, I had to prep this episode Tuesday to air Wednesday. I spent at least 10-15 minutes going frame by frame to see the guy's collection (He had a few Joes) Saw a couple of BATS, Snake Armor, and Tunnel Rat mixed in with the Star Wars figures
I already don't like Dr. Phil's show so I knew this one would anger me. Thank god I had the day off, so I didn't have to watch it |

How much you want to bet the suit, shoes and watch the good doctor was wearing cost more then that poor guy spends on Star Wars in a year? My wife may not understand WHY it's important to me, but she understands it IS important to me.

I don't care what anyone on - or anyone who watches - daytime television thinks about how I spend my money or entertain myself. A huge part of why I'm childfree is that I intend to live my life for myself, not for a kid, not for my neighbors, not for strangers on the street, not for any supernatural power, and certainly not for people who watch daytime talk shows. As long as I'm having fun, the hell with what other people think. |
