I think the characters are balancing a real fine line, and if you have to explain it outside of any material in the movie, you did it poorly, and that is where these caricatures of gangsta culture fail. |

I really liked this movie. A lot!
But weren't a few of dead Decpticons back? Bonecrusher (the 'con Prime fought & killed on the highway), Blackout (the helicopter). I wonder if they were revived after Megatron. And why not Barricade? |

I think I did hear them call the 'copter 'Grindor' once in the movie (which is what the toy is called) but it was still the same model as Blackout |

You ain't kidding. There was a 20 year old chic behind me who I thought was the Paris Hilton dumb-pretty-blonde type who was quiet the whole movie. Figured she was there for her boyfriend. When Optimus bulked up in that scene she said "whooooah!" like some nerdy teen boy (or one of us, of course )

true, but I do like the voice actors reasoning for it -- these are robots that learned earth behaviors from the internet. they could have easily downloaded Kevin Federline music videos and are imitating him, and the roles are a spoof at poser white boy gangstas.
I think the characters are balancing a real fine line, and if you have to explain it outside of any material in the movie, you did it poorly, and that is where these caricatures of gangsta culture fail. Also, even IF we accept that they did get their personalies online, and were going to be influenced by some element of black culture, why the worst, lowest-common denominator stereotypes? Why not Barack Obama (who I hear himself doesn't get cut any slack in the movie)? Why not Martin Luther King, whose speeches are recorded forever? Why not Morgan Freeman or Samuel L Jackson, who, between the two of them, are in damn near everything ever made? Because Michael Bay's warped vision of reality comes through in his work. This is how he sees the world. |

Ya know, its very interesting, I grew up in Hollywood, I graduated film school, I have three uncles that are oldschool art film directors and writers, it's practically a family tradition, and no one ever told me that being a film snob and hating everything that's not a low budget indie film is a requirement. You can't hold every film to the standards of Dr. Schivago and Lawrence of Arabia, some movies are just meant to be enjoyed, it's called suspension of disbelief.
I'm a screenwriter and i've got my BFA and I've worked in the industry, and most industry people/art school grads I know can judge Art seperately from blockbuster fun. I think it makes people feel smart to say a summer movie has plot holes and then reference obscure independent films in comparison. LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE! IT'S OKAY TO SAY YOU LIKE BRAINLESS ACTION! (post # 1,000!!! I'm in the four-digit club, baby!)

To wit: the "Twins" characters are built with gorilla like proportions, they are illiterate, they talk in a stupid "urban slang" that nobody actually uses, they have buckteeth, bug eyes, and wide ears; ALL OF THESE CHARACTERISTICS have been or are attached to African-Americans by those seeking to denigrate them. These characteristics are practically straight out of a Minstrel show of the 1800s. I am not projecting a race onto them; I am looking at their distinguishing characteristics and seeing, historically, these are characteristics racists have claimed were typical of African-Americans in an attempt to denigrate them. In short; offensive racist caricature.

Well, that's just it; I don't buy that they are spoofs of poser white boys, though, because the physical characteristics of their design share too much with historically denigrating depictions of African-Americans for me to write it off that way. And even IF spoofing posers was what they intended, it never, ever came across.
